What do you wear on a long flight?

Do you dress up for a flight somewhere? I've heard it's bad form to wear a tracksuit (like I do). Quite honestly if I'm flying for hours on end then everything I'm wearing is going to be elasticated.
I'm not going to sit there in a suit with high heels on.

Heard where?

Teenagerantruns · 04/01/2026 12:21

Leggings, tee-shirt and jumper normally,

It used to be many years ago you might get upgraded if you looked smart, dont think thats a thing now.

Itsallsostressful · 04/01/2026 12:22

I go for comfort definitely. Elastic waist for sure...t -shirt/sweatshirt ☺️

ChillingWithMySnowmies · 04/01/2026 12:22

trackies and t-shirt and a hoodie normally.. but i've only ever flown to Spain, Greece, and Turkey.. and i think Menorca.. so always went for comfort with a mind to how warm it would be there.

Peonies12 · 04/01/2026 12:23

Never heard of anyone dressing up that’s hilarious. Comfy as possible, and layers as sometimes flights get cold or hot. Warm socks to put on. I like to take clean underwear and socks to change into before arriving

Specialagentblond · 04/01/2026 12:23

You can be presentable and comfortable. I take no offence at anyone wearing a tracksuit on a plane. As long as you’re clean, not contagious, noisy or rude. Some people are getting off a plane and straight to a meeting/social/ whatever so may be dressed to do that.

lonelylavenders · 04/01/2026 12:23

Who told you it was bad form?

my mother in 1991?

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 04/01/2026 12:25

Comfort!

Track bottoms, hoodie, t-shirt, baseball cap, sunglasses, wheelchair. I look like a complete bum, probably. Could not give a fuck unless someone’s paying me, and I never judge what others wear on flights - it’s a flight! We’re all just trying to survive the airport together 😂

miamo12 · 04/01/2026 12:25

Depends where you’re going, what you are doing straight from the airport and the temperature at home at time of travel. Typically for long haul it’s cold at home and warm at destination so I’ll wear a thin ish cotton knit dress with leggings underneath, socks, trainers then remove my leggings before landing, plus a cardigan (plus coat, scarf and hat as required by home conditions). Nice and comfortable but not informal either, mid range.

lonelylavenders · 04/01/2026 12:28

But to actually answer the question- comfortable stuff with an awareness of the weather when you get there

if I am flying somewhere humid I wear joggers/linen trousers with a comfortable waist, vest top, sweatshirt. Trainers. Flip flops in handbag to change into. Pashmina to act as a blanket and cushion

someone always says comfy jumpsuit on these threads, but jumpsuit on plane toilet floor 🤢

Ponoka7 · 04/01/2026 12:29

When younger, I used to wear a strappy dress and pump type shoes. It saved the search etc. Now I pick a comfortable midi dress and trainers. I have never done a winter place holiday. But it would be leggings and long top/tunic. My DD's go in lounge wear. The three piece sets are good, cardi to wrap around, then easy to carry. People tend to dress up a bit if it's a first holiday with a partner, from what I've noticed.

Downdowndownunder · 04/01/2026 12:29

I always layer up for the temperature as someone else said and comfort for sure - so comfortable tshirt and cardi and usual jeans or cords that are not tight.

the only time I’ve ever had to be dressed up was when I’ve left a conference or meeting still in my work clothes, and if I get a chance I change for the flight.

SilverPink · 04/01/2026 12:29

I have never seen anyone in high heels on a long haul flight. Most women don’t even wear high heels to the office these days never mind an aeroplane 😆

RosesAndHellebores · 04/01/2026 12:30

60 years ago, people dressed to fly, and for the theatre, Wimbledon, church, etc. Now, they don't.

Leggings or soft trousers, soft shoes (socks), tee shirt or blouse, sweater, throw or pashmina - flights get cold.

Ooozi · 04/01/2026 12:32

Normally baggy shorts, comfy tshirt, hoodie and crocs. Couldn’t be arsed dressing up to sit for hours in awkward chairs in a flying tin can, comfort is key.

Barrellturn · 04/01/2026 12:34

I wear a bamboo knickers and bra with pantyliner in so I can essentially get 'fresh' knickers before landing. I wear leggings and a cotton t shirts and a zip jacket of some kind.

The worst people are those who turn up in some high fashion number that is 100% polyester so by the end of the flight the entire cabin stinks.

Kisskiss · 04/01/2026 12:36

Wheat whatever you want… I go in soft yoga leggings , trainers and I’m in business class … nobody cares honestly. I think it’s only bad form if you’re in a bralette top or with way too little clothing on, anything else is fine.
key is to be comfortable!

Denim4ever · 04/01/2026 12:38

I've rarely seen people in suits or smart wear on long flights. Flew to Japan last year. I wore a comfy pair of jeans, flight socks, trainers, a big roll neck jumper that I thought would be too bulky packed - but needed as it was winter - with a t shirt underneath in case it was hot on the plane.

At certain airlines, not that long ago (I mean well this side of 2000) if you were a staff member travelling on your concessions if you didn't dress like someone out of Madmen the regs were such you could be denied boarding...🙄

That was just about OK and worth the effort if you ended up in one of the cabins upfront but you could look like a real fish out of water if you were back in row forty or fifty something...

BlackCat14 · 04/01/2026 12:55

Also interested to know where you’ve heard it’s bad form!

If I’m flying somewhere warm, I usually wear a nice midi dress, as I find them comfortable and I won’t be sweating when I arrive. A jumper over the top if it’s cold on the plane. If I’m flying in the winter to another cool destination, usually leggings and a chunky knit.

BeardedBarley · 04/01/2026 13:02

Unless you’re Joan Collins and Leonard Rossiter, people don’t dress up to fly anymore. We flew upper class last time (not the norm for us, we used Virgin points) and the entire cabin was comfy, slouchy clothes.

Racingadmin · 04/01/2026 13:20

I regularly travel to tropical Muslim countries, 10 - 12 hour flights so need modest dress on arrival but comfort on the flight

wear elasticated waist palazzo trousers with a vest top and loose , long sleeve shirt on top for airport and lounge

once onboard I change into cotton gym leggings and an oversize sweatshirt ( so I can take my bra off too )

Then get changed back into original stuff ( with fresh pants ) on landing .

Generally wear plain black sketchers as footwear which double up as gym trainers if travelling cabin baggage only

jackstini · 04/01/2026 13:23

Loose dress with optional soft jacket/cardigan & tights for warmth if needed
