to think WLI have given many people huge health improvements despite the remarkable number of people on MN who are anti WLI for no good reason

There seem to be endless anti WLI threads on here filled with misinformation, faux concern, and thinly disguised jibes at overweight people. I don’t really understand the motivation but that’s another issue.

On the other hand, many people have seen huge improvements in their health, confidence and wellbeing from using WLI. I certainly have.

So I wanted to ask AIBU to say that WLI have given many people huge health improvements and to ask what health improvements have you personally experienced on WLI?

For me

  • been able to reduce antidepressant medication
  • improved fitness, don’t get so tired or out of breath when walking

Can you please link to some of these ‘countless threads’ where weight is ‘being piled back on’ because I have missed them.

Yes, I’d be interested to see these too, they’ve certainly eluded me so far… 🤔

😂😂😂

The fact that you find my comment funny reads to me that you think there is some truth in it. Why else laugh at a random poster on the Internet who seemingly has no idea about WLI , pharmaceutical companies and their need for people to be addicted to their products?

What about the mumsnetters who are bored of constant debates about WLIs - do them or don’t do them, personal choice … snore 😴

They can do this really easy thing which is skip those threads which bore them. 🤣

it’s easy peasy

I there are several other options of treatment for obesity. There are no other options for treating an unreactive thyroid.

Plus if your thyroid would suddenly start working properly, you would ditch the medication and you'd get on with your life.

There are countless threads on here where ditching WLI resulted In the weight being piled back on ... as I said, time will tell.

There are also countless thread with massively positive stories about people coming off MJ, in a managed way, in agreement with their provider, and Maintaining their new healthy weight - maybe even losing a few pounds more. But more importantly also maintaining their new habits - eating healthier, eating less, exercising regularly, paying attention to protein to maintain muscle mass.

Haven't you come across any of those?

MountainStorm · 03/01/2026 12:08

LadyTangerine · 03/01/2026 11:42

'No one has been denying that eating less is the solution. And is it that difficult to understand that WLI help people eat less who otherwise would not be able to do so?'

Oh yes people have always denied it's the amount they consume. Diets don't work, they eat exactly the same amount as everyone else, it's not a greed issue it's a different bodies work different ways issue.

So, as I say at least we all know it is indeed the amount that you eat that causes obesity.

I'm all for them, obesity is the biggest drain on the nhs. I do wonder what people will overindulge in instead though, it seems a mindset tbh.

It’s a shame you feel the need to share your disdain and disgust at overweight people on this thread where people are posting about the amazing success they’ve made of turning their lives around. I’m not going to read or respond to any of your posts from now on.

I think WLI are another form of addiction. But time will tell and I hope for everyone that uses them that I am wrong.

I don’t believe you do.

this is just another anti WLI injection trope

I don't agree with your statement about 'addiction', but even if there were any truth in it, it is surely better than the addiction to UPFs, high sugar, high fat, low nutrient products that food manufacturers have enabled.

YANBU, if they ONLY had health improvements and didn’t also make people better looking there would t be nearly the same level of jealous negativity around them.

This is so true!

To answer your question, no you are not being unreasonable. My experience is that I have lost almost 11st and gone from BMI 50 to BMI 25. The difference in my health and fitness is enormous. I now run regularly, walk everywhere, BP is optimal down from high normal even on medication. I will have massively reduced my risks for a whole hist of conditions. I have not started to “over indulge” in any other areas, other than a slight second hand clothes habit. I don’t think that’s a massive moral failing though!

I agree.
It’s a bit cult-like. The people on WLI can’t just sit back and enjoy the results. They have to post in AIBU to talk about it 🤷‍♀️.

I laughed because your claim is so ridiculous.

In case you are genuinely worried, I lost a quarter of my body weight in a year. Then decided to stop for a while. No withdrawal symptoms 😊 Now started again for the health benefits.

Studies do seem to show that people who stop WLIs put on most of the weight they have lost. I'm certainly expecting to continue to take long-term. It's not a problem - my DH takes diabetes meds every day, my DM takes heart meds, my DS takes ADHD meds. Some conditions are chronic and a tendency to obesity seems to be one of them.

If only there was a weight loss forum on MN where people could share their success stories…..

Exactly. I don't crave taking the injections between doses. I don't look forward to injection day I just take it when it's due like my other medications. I'm very glad of the impact it has on my eating habits and health but I'm not even the slightest bit addicted to it nor am I compelled to take it beyond the minimum amount needed to maintain my current weight

YABU for getting so concerned about the opinions of a bunch of randoms on the internet.

As for WLIs, I have no strong views one way or the other. If they work for you, fine. If not, equally fine.

Yes, nor me. I’ve got no skin in the game whatsoever. If it works, it works. If it carries risks, then people have to decide for themselves. 🤷‍♀️

I put on a lot of weight a few years ago - got very fat. My DH was losing weight, through health, and I had to pile him up with high fat/high sugar foods (consultant instructions). And so I joined in.

He gained nothing, I piled it on. 🙄

When he died, through stress vomiting, lack of appetite, and a physical collapse, the weight just fell off of me.

I’m now down to just over 8 stone and a size 8/10. Virtually halved my body weight. My BMI has plummeted.

I’m over the bereavement stress now, after 3 years, but my appetite is still tiny. So, I’m maintaining the loss.

But, disregarding all this, the weight loss has helped me physically. I feel much better than when I was fat.

The downside is that the skin does get saggy - although that could be an age thing. 🙄

(I’m not, by the way, suggesting exterminating any husbands to help with weight loss) 😳

So, if the jab works for them, and they can maintain the weight loss, then good luck to them. Being fat is a health issue.

If people can do it through willpower, exercise, cutting food intake, and aren’t on weight increasing meds, then good luck to them too. 👍

Let people just do as works best for them.

SilenceInside · 03/01/2026 12:22

I don’t get this obsession with preventing some topics from being discussed in general topics like AIBU and Chat. There’s no restriction on topics in those sections. So what if there’s also a section for the topic? It doesn’t mean that’s the only place you can post about it. There are tools to hide threads you object to. Use them, hide the thread and you need no longer be troubled by seeing it.

Melsy88 · 03/01/2026 12:23

I wonder if part of it is a mindset thing in relation to injections. People are a lot more familiar and comfortable with tablets and so the same drug in tablet form would probably attract less attention.

I think they are great and I know people on them who have had life changing effects. My only worry is whether there is enough support for people when they come off them.

LadyTangerine · 03/01/2026 12:25

'It’s a shame you feel the need to share your disdain and disgust at overweight people '

I don't have any disdain or disgust for obese people I'm stating facts. We've had thousands of threads over the years stating that over consumption has never been the issue. Different bodies and 'different metabolism' has been the cause of obesity. So now we have proof that through appetite suppressants people eat less and do indeed lose weight. It's great, especially for the nhs.

Springswallow · 03/01/2026 12:28

10 and a half stone of here ,due to WLI
Still got another 5 stone to go
Started with a BMI of 56
I was on my way to an early death .

It's food manufacturers fault that people make poor choices?!

Is it vodka manufacturer's fault that some people are alcoholics?

WeekendFreedom · 03/01/2026 12:29

NanFlanders · 03/01/2026 11:29

I gained a lot on (very necessary) mental health meds, and have lost 5 stone on WLIs. The same class of meds have been prescribed for many years for diabetes so there is actually excellent data on their long-term effects.

Why did you gain weight because of the medication? Was it because a side affect was an increased appetite?

Well to a degree yes. Which is why they age restrictions, have to put warnings on labels, there are advertising restrictions and pubs have strict rules about who they'll serve.

ByLemonFish · 03/01/2026 12:30

I think WLIs are wonderful
No one is forced to take them
I attended an orthopedic clinic the week I started, thought I might need knee replacement. I was shocked at the size of people much younger than me, I'm 64. I'm now 2 stone lighter , no longer need knee replacement, feel amazing, size 12, need to lose another stone.
It's not a miracle drug, still need to make healthy eating choices and exercise.

But I did think if the majority of the obese people at the orthopedic clinic were offered WLI maybe they wouldn't be at the clinic. Some quite young (30s) struggled to fit in the extra large chairs. Sad to see. If only it was as simple as "eat less. Move more"

For the first time in my life I've had a period every month if the year. I began taking Mounjaro in July 2024, started my period within 2 weeks, my last period before then was May 2020, I've had a period on the dot every month since. It's incredible the difference it has made to my PCOS, truly life changing medication.
