Who was unreasonable me or the people on the makeup counter

So we are away for a break and I forgot to pick up my make up bag. Thought you know what I’ll just buy the basics again as it’s probably good to have a second lot for the car anyway. I don’t have tonnes and tonnes of make up but I invest in the formulas I prefer. I thought I’d just pick up an eyeliner, mascara, lipstick, foundation, blush, concealer and a gloss. I knew my account was going to take a hit but I rarely treat myself so thought why not.

I explained the situation to the girls on the counter (think Chanel, Dior, Charlotte Tilbury etc) and they said they could help me pick some things out.

We were on our way to a nice lunch. I said in a very courteous and polite manner “please do you mind just slapping on some of the make up for me as I’m in a bit of a rush and stopping has delayed us”. Got told I would have to book an appointment. In this completely dead stand with 4 people literally just stood around. No appointment was available for two hours apparently.

I bought the products but it just left a bad taste in my mouth. I wasn’t looking for a full beat. Just some foundation and eyeshadow. Literally 2 min job.

I ended up spending around £300

Of course I could apply in toilets but I was hoping for a bit of customer service. It’s really put me off the brand. I ended up applying it in the car as we really were a bit late.

Im not an entitled prick. I’m considered very kind by most people. A little bit of assistance would have been greatly appreciated . I would have been open to more upselling also

Well why on earth would you want to waste time in a store when you were late for lunch already? And why would you have been open to upselling? You had to get on the bloody road and didn’t have time to faff or buy extra stuff. All of this situation is down to your poor planning, you forgot your make up bag, were late leaving for lunch and THEN stopped?! You could have just gone bare face. No one would have died, or cared really.

Also, only drag queens use the word ‘beat’ - just FYI. Fair enough if you are one!

carpetfluffs · 02/01/2026 21:40

Just before Christmas I stopped at CT & Nars & was browsing products. The SAs offered to apply what I was looking at to see if I liked it/colour was right I then bought what they showed me.

OP did you know you ruined lunch for everyone that day!!!! 🙄

Silverbirchleaf · 02/01/2026 21:42

As you’d spent alot if money, they could have done it for you, especially as there was no one waiting.

carpetfluffs · 02/01/2026 21:43

I would have taken my money elsewhere tbh.

Growlybear83 · 02/01/2026 21:45

Why would you want someone else to do a ‘two minute job’ to put your makeup on for you? Surely you know how to do it yourself by now? 🤣🤣

GlitzAndGigglesx · 02/01/2026 21:47

I've had make up applied by a MUA working for Bobbi Brown when I worked in a department store and it's really not a 2 minute job. Even if you just want minimal make up they still have to prep your skin and explain which products they're using and why

1reason · 02/01/2026 21:48

I think they could have given you a quick makeover. It does not take long and could have led to more sales for them. Perhaps it being near lunch time meant lack of staff cover.
I used to take full advantage of makeovers in large stores like Debenhams, Frasers, John Lewis...staff were always happy to help and try new products on me.

Where did you get that from are you nuts? No one said that. She was late and then made it other people’s problem at the counter. She delayed herself when she was already late for lunch. I have no idea if she was late for lunch or not and no one said it was ruined for everyone. She just seems to be allergic to the idea that people were not available to do her make up on short notice. And it’s not a two minute job - how daft do you have to be to think this?

Kneeslikethese · 02/01/2026 21:53

Id assume they were shop assistants rather than make up artists.

Fadeintoyou · 02/01/2026 21:56

Did you actually use those words? You sound incredibly rude, suggesting that they slap some make up on and quick because you were running late makes you sound entitled. I’d imagine the staff would have felt that they wouldn’t have been able to please you with a rush job. Also who’s strapped for cash and then ends up spending £300! That bonkers and totally on you.

£300!!!

gerispringer · 02/01/2026 22:02

£300 is a awful lot to pay for an emergency make up kit.

carpetfluffs · 02/01/2026 22:03

@Arlanymor i assumed my comment would go over your head! 😆

Arlanymor · 02/01/2026 21:29

They might not be MUAs, they might be store assistants. Why couldn’t you put your own make up on if it takes two minutes? Find a mirror.

They gave you what you needed when you needed it - appointments are a minimum of 30 minutes with a qualified professional who takes time to do their craft. You seem to think that because you are spending a bit of money that you get to dictate how they do their business? And want a qualified MUA to make you up for free?

‘Stopping has delayed us’ - well that’s entirely of your own making, don’t make your poor planning their crisis.

YABU.

Edited

I agree with everything here.

I personally think you were a bit rude OP.

impostacosta · 02/01/2026 22:06

Same as @PepperedpicklesI worked for Clinique for 10 years and would have just done it for you if the counter was quiet. Maybe it’s specific to the brand, I know CT are very big on pushing appointments and I quite often go into selfridges and see people with rollers in getting their makeup done for their night out
at that counter. I don’t think you were unreasonable to ask at all but I suspect that because they already had the sale they had lost interest in helping.

Ihatethistimeline · 02/01/2026 22:07

OP you aren’t being unreasonable at all to believe they could spare 5 minutes to do your face.

However, the mistake you made was to share that you spent £300 on makeup on here. Many will be blinded by that and will post accordingly unfortunately.

VoltaireMittyDream · 02/01/2026 22:08

This is so bizarre.

Is it such a terrible hardship to apply your own foundation & mascara?

foxlover47 · 02/01/2026 22:08

Agree with @Pepperedpickles
I worked for Clinique and Lancôme over the years and I would have happily put some of our product on you, getting a return customer is always good and it also gives great service which is good word of mouth for the brand and store

Sleepasaurus · 02/01/2026 22:08

They provide a service where they use their training and expertise to help people explore what products might suit them and understand how to use them to best effect.

They aren’t there to quickly apply your already chosen make up because you’re in a rush and can’t be arsed to do it yourself!

Pollqueen · 02/01/2026 22:09

AmyDuPlantier · 02/01/2026 21:31

I think that is shit customer service actually. If there was nobody booked to sit in the chair for the next ten minutes it would have been nice to treat a customer spending a decent amount.

Agree. Customer service in this country is appalling. I'd leave some sort of review or email head office

No I didn’t. I said if it was no bother could you please just apply some of the make up as I am running very late. Obviously got my answer and left it at that.

Im not the rude, entitled person people are weirdly trying to portray me as.

In a restaurant every table will be empty until a booked customer arrives so they can't just give you someone's table. This is the same principle. If people have booked in for makeup then they can't just give you someone's slot even if they are late/ don't turn up. They will need staff to cover the till and to still serve customers while others are designated for makeup which is why there's a booking system. Just because you're spending money doesn't mean you're any more entitled than if you were just in browsing.

No darling she’s not entitled, what she encounter is a typical can’t be bothered /computer says no attitude that’s now the norm in the UK.

Well I didn’t want to have to buy all the tools and I don’t like applying foundation with fingers.
