Who was unreasonable me or the people on the makeup counter

So we are away for a break and I forgot to pick up my make up bag. Thought you know what I’ll just buy the basics again as it’s probably good to have a second lot for the car anyway. I don’t have tonnes and tonnes of make up but I invest in the formulas I prefer. I thought I’d just pick up an eyeliner, mascara, lipstick, foundation, blush, concealer and a gloss. I knew my account was going to take a hit but I rarely treat myself so thought why not.

I explained the situation to the girls on the counter (think Chanel, Dior, Charlotte Tilbury etc) and they said they could help me pick some things out.

We were on our way to a nice lunch. I said in a very courteous and polite manner “please do you mind just slapping on some of the make up for me as I’m in a bit of a rush and stopping has delayed us”. Got told I would have to book an appointment. In this completely dead stand with 4 people literally just stood around. No appointment was available for two hours apparently.

I bought the products but it just left a bad taste in my mouth. I wasn’t looking for a full beat. Just some foundation and eyeshadow. Literally 2 min job.

I ended up spending around £300

You were on your way to a "nice lunch" and you were going to be late as you wanted spend £300 on make up last minute.

That alone makes you entitled!

I’m not sure you understand the definition of entitled.

Are you a bloke?
I've never heard a woman refer to herself as a prick.
Is that a new fad?

Really? I’ve heard it loads. Prick is a generic, sexless insult. Like cunt.

They might not be MUAs, they might be store assistants. Why couldn’t you put your own make up on if it takes two minutes? Find a mirror.

They gave you what you needed when you needed it - appointments are a minimum of 30 minutes with a qualified professional who takes time to do their craft. You seem to think that because you are spending a bit of money that you get to dictate how they do their business? And want a qualified MUA to make you up for free?

‘Stopping has delayed us’ - well that’s entirely of your own making, don’t make your poor planning their crisis.

YABU.

OP spending HER own money as she chooses to doesn’t make her entitled

EmeraldShamrock000 · 06/01/2026 08:10

The make up lady is an artist, the sales assistant is a sales person.

IsabellaGoodthing · 06/01/2026 09:06

Sorry OP but your behaviour sounds very entitled to me. You didn't know whether the women at the counter were allowed to put on customer s makeup. Spending some money doesn't entitle you to special treatment. And you could perfectly well have made yourself up in ladies. Asking very nicely does not make it OK.

It makes OP privileged, not entitled. Entitled means believing incorrectly that you have a right to expect something extra.

Lostatsea2025 · 06/01/2026 09:15

I used to know someone who worked on a few of these counters. She said that as soon as she hit her sales target, she took her foot off the gas and didn’t try so hard with the customers. If she sold too much, the employing company would only increase her targets further so she settled with a level (& commission!) she was happy with. With Xmas just passed, they probably sold what they needed to already so we’re not so willing to go the extra mile.🙄

Thanks, but I understand that.

Do you understand that she was running late because she felt ENTITLED to hold up her family get together so she could get her makeup?

It makes OP privileged, not entitled. Entitled means believing incorrectly that you have a right to expect something extra.

She incorrectly believed she was entitled to her relatives' TIME. She is privileged if they don't think she's a bit of a prima donna for doing so.

And here's me at 47, also without any kids (and mortgage paid off) buying Seventeen mascara and lippy from Boots, cheapo W3 Foundation from B&M and powder from Bodycare, saving myself £285, and still being thrilled with the coverage and how smoothy the mascara goes on and makes my lashes all feathery AND lusciously long at the same time. I feel even better about my choices after reading this post!!

Aren't you clever with your priorities! Mortgage paid off you say? If only i could be more like that.

@FarmGirl78

i would rather buy the products I like and which make me look and feel good and which are good for my skin than have my mortgage paid off at 47…life is too short.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 06/01/2026 10:07

Surely it made more sense for you to do it in the car anyway. You got to your lunch quicker than if they had applied it for you. You have no idea if they were shop assistants or MUAs, maybe they had a customer due in 5 minutes, maybe it was break time for one of them. I think you sound entitled.

That cheapo stuff is probably full of phthalates at best, lead and asbestos at worst. You get what you pay for. The good brands have ingredients that are far better for you, and the formulas are much better and more natural-looking. If you haven't used the good stuff, you probably won't see the difference.

Good for you about the mortgage, but I don't think a couple of hundred pounds once or twice a year would make much difference to whether someone can pay it off by 47 or not!

My point wasn't that I've paid it off by not buying posh makeup, but that I'm not buying posh makeup despite being able to afford it.

Cheaper make up isn't full of asbestos and lead. That's the funniest thing I've heard in ages. I've had month sized testers of posh stuff and was disappointed. I'll stick with my lead filled asbestos slap that goes on smoothly and has great coverage. 👍🏻

I've reached sixty without ever once hearing prick being used in reference to the female of the species.

Well that's what I'm doing. Buying the stuff that makes my skin look fab.

As above regarding what I'd said about the mortgage, my point was the other side of the same coin.....that I have the money to spend on posh stuff so I'm not only buying the cheap stuff because it's all I can afford. I have a habit of not explaining myself very well and people get the wrong end of the stick of the point I'm trying to make.

You have no idea what's really in the cheap stuff. Don't know why you think it's the funniest thing you've heard in ages - Johnson's baby powder didn't list asbestos as an ingredient, and yet here we are. I wouldn't risk my health with bargain-basement cosmetics made in God knows what dodgy parts of the world. Really, loosen those purse strings a bit!

Dietday · 06/01/2026 18:17

I think you were most unfortunate and not unreasonable to ask.
I would certainly not have spent that amount with such an attitude.
I have always found the luxury brands excellent in my local city store, tripping over themselves to help.
Yanbu.
Very poor customer service.

I've somehow come across as very differently to how I posted. I didn't mean I was being so fab paying off my mortgage, and being proud of that choice (not me at all, that sounds really boastful and preachy). But that I'm happy with my choice of cheap slap regardless (excellent coverage and dupe of posh stuff) but even more so when the posh staff aren't up to expectations and you can survive so much money and come away feeling disappointed. I don't even know any more why the point I was trying to make. I'm on a run of working nights and my brain has dropped that bit of info. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm a Scientist with a background in product testing and quality control. I know expensive doesn't mean better product, process or raw ingredients. I'm happy with my choices.

But I'd bet you don't work as a tester or scientist in the cosmetics industry.

It's common knowledge in cosmetics that the cheapo stuff is full of phthalates at the least, while the more expensive stuff isn't, and generally has better quality ingredients. Phthalates are carcinogenic.

Maybe you should run your products through the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database.

https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

ETA: I just inputted Charlotte Tilbury and the products that came up were listed as the lowest hazard. They don't seem to have anything from Seventeen listed and I can't even find a makeup brand called W3. But if W3 that refers to a shade from L'Oreal's True Match range, it came up as Moderate Hazard.

When it comes to beauty products, it simply isn't true that there's no difference in the quality and safety of cheapo and expensive products. If you're a scientist and a product tester, I'm REALLY surprised that you don't know that.
