What and how much did you bake over Christmas?

I’m shattered after hosting my first Christmas. Will not be in a rush to host for a while. I made so much bloody food I don’t think I will be able took at a stand mixer for months.

i probably made 5x more than I typically do.

Mince pies, ginger bread, Yule log, cinnamon buns, sausage rolls. You name it really.

Why?

just because you host it doesn’t mean you have to make every food item personally.

All I did was Xmas cake and a bunch of gingerbread people with the kids.

Chasbots · 02/01/2026 19:58

I made a Bakewell pudding from scratch, meant to last year, finally got around to it this year.

I don't think I did anything much else. Ignored Christmas other than taking gifts for family.

carpetfluffs · 02/01/2026 19:58

Nope, I can’t compete with M&S and Waitrose so I don’t try!

GarlicSound · 02/01/2026 19:59

I made 4 Christmas cakes, that's it. I live alone and don't really do Christmas [smug] I'm traditionally known for my Christmas cake but I'm not bloody doing it again. They cost so much and take so long, I get really stressed about getting it wrong. I've kept one, will feed it even more booze over the year, and it will be my spectacular finale!

Oh, I've made some mince pies, strudels and things for myself with all that boozy fruit - but I buy ready-made pastry, so they're no bother.

I'm delighted to recommend shop-bought everything for the future, OP!

Taytocrisps · 02/01/2026 19:59

Nothing. There's just me and my adult DD and she's not the biggest fan of pudding, Christmas cake, mince pies etc. No point in making a load of baked goods just for me.

I just found it worked out far cheaper to make it myself. I had planned to m and s the lot but the total was nearing 4 figures for the number of people we had. The prices for decent party food is just nuts. £25 for supermarket salmon terrine. Just made it myself.

My husband and mil helped A LOT

Christmas cake
About a million mince pies
Gingerbread
Cinnamon buns
Endless loaves of bread
Yule log
Chocolate chip cookies
Florentines
Macarons
Shortbread

I love to bake but I'm not making anything now until March 😂

Blanketenvy · 02/01/2026 20:02

Just Christmas cakes. Was intending to homemake more stuff but just ended up buying it due to flare up of chronic illness, actually would do the same again-theres so much pressure the idea of having to make a ridiculous amount of food it's all just exhausting.

HazelHolly · 02/01/2026 20:03

Don’t do all that again. It is just not worth the effort. I’ve had Christmas’s making my own pastry for mince pies, boiling down cranberries for sauce etc. it’s a complete faff and nobody carers!

Make a couple of things you enjoy making and have the time to make, buy the rest in. Remember unless you have a house full of kids, most people really don’t need a tonne of sweet stuff in, as they always seem to accumulate over Christmas from visitors/ gifts anyway.
Take it easy next year. The whole thing is all too much bloody work without the baking I find!

ZeldaFighter · 02/01/2026 20:03

Made nothing for no one 😀 didn't get up till 1.30pm more than once 😀

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 02/01/2026 20:04

Sausage rolls and that was it. As shop bought ones are all rank.

Everything else was bought

Egglio · 02/01/2026 20:05

I did a Christmas cake, sausage rolls, endless sourdough loaves, sourdough pizza bases, sourdough ball wreath for a camembert, quiche, and tangle pies.

But I love baking, so I enjoy it. I certainly don't turn my nose up at anything shop bought! Don't overstretch yourself OP!

HazelHolly · 02/01/2026 20:07

….I should add that in some parallel universe where I have lots of time and don’t work FT, I would bake more and everyone’s lists sound lovely BTW!

Do88byisfree · 02/01/2026 21:04

Pavlova
Gingerbread house
Shortbread

Would love to bake more (mince pies, christmas cake, yule log etc) but nobody eats it .... wish I could get the same satisfaction from putting together a salad....

pastapestoparmesan · 02/01/2026 21:06

Two Yule logs. They were both delicious.

TheChosenTwo · 02/01/2026 21:08

Mince pies, chocolate Yule log thing, sausage rolls, veggie squash and chestnut rolls, delias chocolate truffle torte, millionaire shortbread, doughballs stuffed with Camembert, probably more that I’ve forgotten.
Why? Because it’s all infinitely nicer than what you can buy in the shops, and because we do a lot of hosting and prefer to offer homemade. Nothing more to it than that.

Cantonet · 02/01/2026 21:09

Sourdough pizza base, Plum crumble, Sourdough naan flatbreads & Apple tarte tatin. I very rarely bake now as kids are all at Uni/working & we're trying to eat more healthily. But Christmas was an exception.

Dinosweetpea · 02/01/2026 21:10

Absolutely nothing.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/01/2026 21:20

I made a gluten free Christmas cake and it’s absolutely delicious. I was hoping to not keep eating it after new years but it’s calling me and I keep having another slice.

I also made peppermint creams with milk, white and dark chocolate and they were also delicious. But are now all gone.

everything else I bought. Some years I make truffles or cookies but we didn’t this year, I don’t eat gluten any more and I haven’t quite worked out GF recipes so didn’t risk any major bakes

AnneElliotsBestFriend · 02/01/2026 21:48

Christmas cake

PeonyBulb · 02/01/2026 21:48

I baked some bread and that’s it. Bought everything thing else. No time to bake plus I’m a rubbish baker.

Hesma · 02/01/2026 21:50

Yule log, cinnamon buns and stollen

Scarlettpixie · 02/01/2026 21:51

Cat1504 · 02/01/2026 21:53

Sminty2 · 02/01/2026 21:55
