To prefer Prosecco to Champagne?

For some reason this raises a certain person’s eyebrows, almost as if it’s a moral failing on my part somehow.

What could be going on here?

I prefer Cava to prosecco and crement or English Sparkling to some champagnes.

Thelondonone · 02/01/2026 18:00

I like dry wine but find some champagne is too dry. Tried tattonger on Christmas Day and had to put orange in it…

anericanidiot · 02/01/2026 18:00

Maybe you’re just as cheap-tasted as me then 😉

I bought a bottle of champagne for NYE as a treat and it was disappointing, I'd rather have saved the extra and just got prosecco.

Middlemarch123 · 02/01/2026 18:02

Can’t beat a bottle of Bolly, sweetie

bookmarket · 02/01/2026 18:03

You like what you like but prosecco is not made in the same way as cava, champagne, cremant and English sparkling wines.

Pyew · 02/01/2026 18:04

Apparently champagne contains fewer calories and less sugar.

A health drink, if you will.

Bougainsillier · 02/01/2026 18:04

Tbh if you handed me a glass of champagne, a glass of cava and a glass of prosecco I’d not be able to tell you which was which, just which I liked.

buckleberryferry · 02/01/2026 18:05

I used to, but I’m convinced it used to be nicer before it got so popular.

I prefer cava tbh, I got some champagne for my 50th and it was fine but a bit "chewy".

joeninetey · 02/01/2026 18:07

Champagne used to be special. Now it's just a drink that anyone buys in some cases for around a tenner. Think Prosecco gives 90% of the taste of Champagne for half the cost. Though if push came to shove, I'd still prefer my Dom Perignon 1955.

TonTonMacoute · 02/01/2026 18:14

I'm not a fan personally, and prefer cava, but if you enjoy drinking it that's the most important thing. I think a lot depends on if you prefer a drier or sweeter wine.

As a PP said it's not made using the champagne method, and I also agree that it was nicer before it became so popular.

Absolutely gross. Will drink Pol if I have to.

Too dark, too strong. No thanks

Which is probably why I don’t like cava, champagne, cremant or ES.

My thread is rather about why this person takes umbrage to my personal tastes?

Sadly, in recent years, prosecco has developed a 'reputation' and there is a lot to sneer at unfairly. It's a perfectly nice, sparkling wine but it is now negatively associated with loud, trashy, girls' nights and loud, trashy women. I personally would avoid it simply to avoid the clichés and tired jibes.

Prosecco is also known for being a cheaper alternative to Champagne so the eyebrow raising could be about that - being seen as a budge choice. TBF, cava, crémant de Loire (drinking it as I write ...) and other sparkling wines are also less expensive than official Champage and many of them are very well made so are dry rather than sticky.

As PPs obvserve, Champagne is usually dryer/less sweet, with a toasty or nutty character, compared to prosecco so it could be a sneer about your 'less sophisticated' palate.

What's going on is you're leaving more champagne for me, and I thank you for your service.

SpikeStoker · 02/01/2026 18:17

Champagne, particularly the “names” eg Bolligner, are expensive because you are often paying for the name “Champagne” all use different blends of grapes so you need to know which you like, they don’t all taste similar. Prosecco however has a lot of sugar added and you can get lovely ones in Italy, but most over here are awful mass produced dross. Cava, if made the Method Traditional way, is the best substitute for the price or Crémant, which is made in the same way as champagne just not in the Champagne region. Lesser known champagne houses can also offer good value.

ExtraOnions · 02/01/2026 18:17

Depends on the Champagne .. some are much better than others. I don’t like a Moët, I find it too dry, I quite like a Verve or a Bollinger.

anericanidiot · 02/01/2026 18:17

The sneering is what I don’t enjoy. Really, really annoying.

All tastes the same mixed with 7up.

anericanidiot · 02/01/2026 18:19

Prosecco isn’t really much sweeter, both around 12g/L average

In order of descending sparkling deliciousness:

Vinho Verde
Prosecco
Cava

Champagne

(There’s one that goes between Cava and Champagne, but I don’t remember what it is 😄)

anericanidiot · 02/01/2026 18:29

Vinho Verde sounds perfect! Light and acidic 8-11% alcohol!
