To prefer Prosecco to Champagne?

For some reason this raises a certain person’s eyebrows, almost as if it’s a moral failing on my part somehow.

What could be going on here?

I do! I've never had a bad prosecco but have had some awful champagne 🍾

In order of descending sparkling deliciousness:

Vinho Verde
Prosecco
Cava

Champagne

(There’s one that goes between Cava and Champagne, but I don’t remember what it is 😄)

Sekt?

Sneering at someone else's drinks choice is not on-you like what you like.

I personally don't like Prosecco (I find it too sweet and it always gives me a headache).

I love English Sparkling Wine (most varieties) and some champagne, cava and cremant.

I wish I did enjoy Prosecco though as it is a lot cheaper than what I like!

I prefer Cava to prosecco and crement or English Sparkling to some champagnes.

This. I'm the same as champagne gives me head and gut ache. Cava and cremants sit better for me.

Everyone's tastes are different. I once tasted a very expensive red wine, it tasted like an armpit (not that I've lincked armpits, the taste was like the smell of sweaty ones). I much prefer the 7 pound bottles 😂🤣

anericanidiot · 02/01/2026 19:11

46% of people are also sneering at my choice or has the thread just turned into people giving their opinion on the two drinks?

I don't like champagne either but really like a nice dry prosecco

Sharpzebra · 02/01/2026 19:19

I prefer prosecco I wouldn't actively go and buy champagne tbh

rightoguvnor · 02/01/2026 19:26

I shouldn’t worry about people sneering at your preferences OP. I’ll be your fall guy.
Over this Xmas I have realised that actually I prefer Asti Spumante to any of those shudder-inducing dry thjngs.
And a visit to a very old relative reintroduced me to Hock.

unsync · 02/01/2026 19:28

There's a lot of variation to Champagne. Blanc de Blancs or Blanc de Noirs, sec, demi-sec, brût etc, vintage, non-vintage and so on. The taste also varies hugely according to where the grapes are grown. Some of the smaller houses produce Champagne which is much better than the larger, well known houses, Moët Brut Imperial for example.

All tastes the same mixed with 7up.

Lolz

Bordeuxkitchen · 02/01/2026 19:29

I’m quite happy with a five quid Aldi Cava, but I do love Bolly and Cristal is my favourite (have drunk it precisely 3 times in my life!)
Prosecco can get in the bin, it all tastes like Babycham to me 🤣🤣

Squidgemoon · 02/01/2026 19:30

I adore Prosecco. Much much prefer it to champagne, which I only really like if it’s served very cold. I like English sparkling, cava and other “lesser” French sparkling such as blanquette (friends who moved to the south of France introduced me to that, yum!)

CheeseWisely · 02/01/2026 19:39

anericanidiot · 02/01/2026 18:29

Vinho Verde sounds perfect! Light and acidic 8-11% alcohol!

Can confirm Vinho Verde is top tier sparkling. Then cava, then cremant, then champagne, then prosecco.

Despite the above I’ll be opening a prosecco as soon as DS is asleep because it’s what we have in the house and tomorrow is my last chance for a lie-in before normal routine returns, so dry January can wait.

FruAashild · 02/01/2026 19:44

You like what you like and there's nothing wrong with that. Prosecco has a terribly down market reputation due to its lower price (champagne method is more labour intensive to do) and that is the main reason for the snobbery. But if you prefer the taste (and there is a quite deliberate taste difference) then why spend more money than you need to? But next time someone is snobby just tell them you prefer more aromatic wines and you like the fruity and floral notes of the charmat (or tank) method vs the drier biscuitiness of the traditional method. That shouldbeenough to stop most clueless snobs.

SwedishEdith · 02/01/2026 19:52

This thread is making me realise I need to do some serious taste testing to compare all the various fizzes. If buying for an event, I'll buy Crémant but I don't really know if that's because I've been swayed by marketing and articles saying it's the fizz of choice for those in the know.

Used to drink cava when that was all the rage 20+ years ago and then prosecco appeared about 20 years ago - was cheap from Aldi. But I do find it sweet now and don't really enjoy it (will drink it though). I think it's reminding me of Lambrusco when everyone drank that about 40 years ago.

The English sparkling wines I've had have seemed sharp and appley. Had some Veuve Clicquot on Christmas Day and that was lovely. But was that because I knew it was champagne? Still feel I really need to do a blind tasting to check I'm not being influenced by what I think I should like.

Sandcaaarstle · 02/01/2026 19:57

I’d always choose Prosecco over champagne. Champagne gives me an instant headache - and in the words of my DD, tastes a bit like how she imagines poison would taste 😂

Drink what you like OP, far too much snobbery in the wine world.

BeardedBarley · 02/01/2026 20:00

I’m not a fan on Prosecco, but a good cremant or cava can benearly as nice as champagne.

Bjorkdidit · 02/01/2026 20:30

anericanidiot · 02/01/2026 18:17

The sneering is what I don’t enjoy. Really, really annoying.

Just ignore them. Don't give them the satisfaction of thinking they've got a reaction.

I've tried all the fizzes from cheap cava and prosecco to £20/30 a bottle English sparkling or champagne (I drink a bottle a week at home on average, make good use of offers including buy 6 save 25% so average spend is under £10 a bottle).

And do you know, I enjoy them all equally and without prior knowledge would be unable to say what type I actually preferred or which was cheap and expensive. I just like a 'glass of fizz' and am happy with that.

BadgernTheGarden · 02/01/2026 20:34

Perfectly your choice, you like what you like.

Who is this certain person OP? Do they have form for being a bit of a judgey pants or twat?

Yes. They just like to throw barbs around a bit.

Contycont · 02/01/2026 21:27

Vinho Verde and Cava then white rioja are my faves. I don't turn down prosecco but it never feels like I'm treating myself when I have it.

Contycont · 02/01/2026 21:28

(I acknowledge that Rioja isn't sparkling, so misses the point a bit)

grumpygrape · 02/01/2026 21:34

anericanidiot · 02/01/2026 18:16

Which is probably why I don’t like cava, champagne, cremant or ES.

My thread is rather about why this person takes umbrage to my personal tastes?

Because this person doesn't understand that people and their tastes differ and unless they harm other people no tastes are right or wrong.

Perhaps rolling your eyes back and saying 'do you have a problem with that?'

I did vaguely ask if I was being ‘Prosecco-shamed’ but they’d stopped listening by the second word that came out of my mouth. Standard fare.
