To prefer Prosecco to Champagne?

For some reason this raises a certain person’s eyebrows, almost as if it’s a moral failing on my part somehow.

What could be going on here?

Guinness and cider mixed, used to be de rigueur in my circles.

Black Velvet. 😋

I don’t like prosecco really. Cream at better than cava. But champagne is best if it’s one you like. There are rotten champagne out there. Moet is not nice, Perrier Jouet is lovely as is veuve cliquot and Laurent Perrier. Not a fan of Boli or Taittinger either.

SabrinaThwaite · 03/01/2026 22:16

I must be a philistine because having tried Dom Perignon, whilst it was nice I didn’t think it was anything particularly special.

Do like a vinho verde or a txakoli (hard to find though) and cava.

Alittlefrustrated · 03/01/2026 22:21

Both too dry for me - 3 bottles of Moet in my kitchen right now. Unwanted presents.

Nottodaty · 03/01/2026 22:28

I didn’t mind initially Prosecco …but it now gives me awful ingestion/acid reflux.

Aldi champagne is actually ok and a good price. I do like the more expensive stuff - I don’t drink loads so it’s like a little treat! Champagne has to be proper cold - don’t like it if it’s isn’t cold enough.

NormasArse · 03/01/2026 22:32

I quite often prefer Italian wine over French.

Dry Prosecco is lovely.

It’s when wines become really popular that they lose something. The Pinot Grigio of old was rather nice- what you get now is mass produced meh, unless you seek out the decent stuff. Same with some Prosecco. Same with some champagnes!!

Tbh if you handed me a glass of champagne, a glass of cava and a glass of prosecco I’d not be able to tell you which was which, just which I liked.

I agree, and tbh all three vary a lot.

Champagne in particular- there are some I love and prefer to the other drinks, and some I don’t like at all. But I can never remember the names of which ones I like! It’s not about how dry or otherwise they are though - there’s some other taste that certain champagnes have that I don’t like.

I prefer Appletiser to them all!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 03/01/2026 23:14

I prefer Prosecco for the most part for casual drinking. My favourite is a single glass of perfectly chilled champagne but I find champagne can be quite variable even within the brand, much more so than Prosecco. Had a lovey bottle of champagne from Lidl recently.

In order of descending sparkling deliciousness:

Vinho Verde
Prosecco
Cava

Champagne

(There’s one that goes between Cava and Champagne, but I don’t remember what it is 😄)

I haven't had vino Verde for years! I remember really liking it. Must try some.

We got lots of champagne when we got married 3 years ago. Still got about 4 bottles left.

Champagne used to be special. Now it's just a drink that anyone buys in some cases for around a tenner. Think Prosecco gives 90% of the taste of Champagne for half the cost. Though if push came to shove, I'd still prefer my Dom Perignon 1955.

I was so disappointed when I got to try Dom. Give me an English Gusborne or Chapel Down any day.

Taittinger my fave of the French…

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 03/01/2026 23:20

@NormasArse you should try a Franciacorta if you can get hold of it, it’s Italian but unlike Prosecco, made in the traditional method like champagne, so a bit more interesting 👍

HRTQueen · 03/01/2026 23:22

I prefer Prosecco and Cremant is even nicer

SabrinaThwaite · 03/01/2026 23:22

Both Lidl and Aldi champagnes win awards and get recommended as best buys.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 03/01/2026 23:26

Aldi Cremant du Jura always getting recommended, am yet to try but keen!

JudyMoncada · 03/01/2026 23:26

Carry on. Leaves more of the good stuff for the rest of us. Smile
