Fake grass is the height of tackiness

Horid stuff, and bad for wildlife.

If you don't have any spare time or are lazy, perhaps a property with a smaller garden.

It’s monstrous. Crass, classless, tasteless and stupid.

Gosh
I moved home afew months ago and the smallish garden has fake grass.
Suits me perfectly. Clean and low maintenance. Complimented by some lovely pot plants.

CatusFlatus · 01/01/2026 19:31

We had it put down over 10 years ago, but only because my DS was playing football in the garden non-stop meaning the grass was totally worn away in large patches - a concrete dust bowl in the summer and a quagmire in the winter. Putting down fake grass enabled his siblings and us to also enjoy the garden. We will be replacing it with real grass this year though and I'm looking forward to remodelling the garden and doing away with the football pitch aesthetic!

Fillyfrog · 01/01/2026 19:32

It's fab. The kids can play in the garden any weathers and it's always suitable to play on, never muddy or too soggy. They don't bring all the mud in the house either. Lifesaver for children that want to play out constantly. Only have it in a (small) back garden and paid for the good stuff so it doesn't look too fake. Also have surrounded it with real flower beds and plants!

I am aware I will be flamed for this 😅

You are quite literally Hitler.

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 01/01/2026 19:33

If we didn't have fake grass, DD wouldn't have been able to safely play in the garden as it was all chipped stones. Fake grass was a cheap and easy option.

If you like it, brilliant. If not, move on.

Nugg · 01/01/2026 19:34

I moved into a house with a moderately sized lawn with fake grass. To me it’s a godsend, no mowing (after a 100ft garden this is heaven!) and poo patrol is easier. I’m yet to find someone who can tell it’s fake as the previous owners just have paid for good stuff!!

MrsMiagi · 01/01/2026 19:35

We have it, perfectly happy with it.

YellowPixie · 01/01/2026 19:36

It's not "fake grass". It's plastic. A total abomination.

Nugg · 01/01/2026 19:36

Hang on I have busy bird feeders and lots of bee friendly plants…why does this make artificial grass unfriendly??

Fake = not real.

Fake grass is not real.

NotSayingImBatman · 01/01/2026 19:38

Look, I hate it too, really I do. But we live in a new build, because DH and I are millennials and the housing market is fucked and new builds were basically the best bang for our buck. The house is built on farmland and, like most new builds built on farmland, the gardens are riddled with leatherjackets that completely destroy grass. The builders also left us with about 2 inches of topsoil on top of clay. Fake grass means we can actually use the stupid garden, I wish there was another option but we just didn’t have £10k to drop on making the ground useable and getting rid of the leatherjackets that would’ve no doubt just reinfested from the houses either side anyway.

So fake grass it is.

somanychristmaslights · 01/01/2026 19:39

I have it as my garden is in the shade most of the year so was always muddy, and DS plays football out on it every day. Works well for us and doesn’t affect anyone else! Result! 🤣

StabbyCat · 01/01/2026 19:40

We have fake grass. We hate gardening but didn’t want slabs or concrete.

I absolutely don’t give the tiniest hoot what anyone else thinks 😁

jemim · 01/01/2026 19:40

My small garden is the reason for the fake grass. I’m not buying a lawn mower (and storing it where??) to trim a “lawn” the size of my car.

But the good news is you can’t see it all the way up there on your high horse.

Lennonjingles · 01/01/2026 19:41

I don’t particularly like it, but half of my small garden has it, the other half I spend months trying to get it looking something like grass during summer months before my dog destroys it, like now it’s completely mud.

80smonster · 01/01/2026 19:43

Absolutely vile. Strictly for chavs.

Agree - accept it's not good for the environment, but neither are long haul flights and mn doesn't mind them...
I was really struggling with a newborn and a toddler when exh left and only ever seemed to get half the garden done. Tried a gardener but could really afford it and was finding keeping house under control hard enough without having an unusable garden.

So glad I had it put in when covid came and kids could be outside endlessly while I was working, it's survived football and paddling pools. I might change back and returf when it gets to the end of it's life coz it won't last forever but let's see.

We did the same.
Half the "lawn" was behind next door's huge leylandii hedge in perpetual shade. One winter of football and there was nothing left.
That plastic has allowed the kids to play outdoors all year round.

The rest of my garden consists of a pond and some wildflowers, couple of raised beds and some vegetables. No chemicals used. I don't water in the summer as we live in the southeast where we always have water restrictions.

My garden isnt perfect but we did our best.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 01/01/2026 19:49

We have fake grass. It was here when we bought the house and I'd like to replace it at some point but there are bigger jobs to do at the moment! The previous owners had the garden with fake grass, a huge hot tub and all of the wood painted grey, so I've prioritised getting the wood back to brown and getting some colour in the place. We do have a nice wildflower bed now at least so not completely anti wildlife here 😉

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/01/2026 19:49

I hate it with a passion and would never have it anywhere near my garden, but then I also hate vinyl flooring, teacup dogs and wind chimes and realise that some things that I loathe suit other people perfectly well.

Fake grass has its uses I am sure. Doesn't stop me hating it but I'm not going to go round at night ripping it up from neighbouring houses.

Frynye · 01/01/2026 19:50

Well don’t get it in your garden then. Problem solved

MinnieMountain · 01/01/2026 19:53

We have it. Our back garden had gravel and brick-edged boarders when we bought our house.

It was either that or completely remodel the garden to make a path for our daily trips to the shed to get our bikes and a flat area for DS to play.

I understand that it's bad for the environment, but we have made other choices such as not having a car which plenty of people with proper grass gardens do have.

Goodadvice1980 · 01/01/2026 19:55

Yep, YANBU OP.

Tacky and not very environmentally friendly. Often accompanied by grey houses with a clinically white/grey interior a la live, laugh, love 😩

billiongulls · 01/01/2026 19:17

There are options other than grass

Like paving? What if people don’t like concrete covering their whole outdoor space?
