Fake grass is the height of tackiness

Horid stuff, and bad for wildlife.

If you don't have any spare time or are lazy, perhaps a property with a smaller garden.

Even worse is when people/property developers put it in the front garden so everyone has to see it. It’s bad enough in the back garden but front garden omg, it makes my eyeballs bleed.

Punkerplus · 02/01/2026 16:18

Case in point for what exactly? That I'm classy or tasteless or whatever anyone else in this threads makes baseless assumptions about people about artificial grass?

Or that I work full time, have two young children, limited funds and more pressing matters on my mind like keeping a roof over my head and feeding my children?

Boomer55 · 02/01/2026 16:20

Paved Drives are bad for the environment, but people still do it. Their property = their choice.

Gosh
I moved home afew months ago and the smallish garden has fake grass.
Suits me perfectly. Clean and low maintenance. Complimented by some lovely pot plants.

It’s not clean, It’s the opposite.
Real lawns are clean as they clean themselves.
Anyway, if you’re elderly or disabled I can kind of understand why it might appeal but I’d personally have slabs or gravel if I couldn't manage.

FollowSpot · 02/01/2026 16:32

I am looking to move house and will avoid anywhere where the garden is fake grass as I believe it is a lot of work and expense to remove? Because of the surface and hardcore underneath?

MandemChickenShop · 02/01/2026 16:37

Height of tackiness is slagging other people's choices on the internet

Sunandfrost · 02/01/2026 16:38

I can also recommend clover. It's hard, draught resistant (i was the only one with green garden during hosepipe ban, got some side eyes...) easy to maintain. Alao helps with non desirable weeds.

Last neighbours had fake grass and hoovered it every week... Not much difference to mowing imho there

UniquePinkSwan · 02/01/2026 16:49

FrodoBiggins · 01/01/2026 20:33

Beautiful.
I love a clover garden too, v good for coverage!

Clover gardens just look like they are covered in weeds. Awful

MissFancyDay · 02/01/2026 16:53

It's an abomination

Totally agree with Scarletpixie. There are so many people ready to judge others for their choices. I also agree with the comments about how many of those drive gas guzzling cars etc.How many use a supermarket instead of local shops, buy out of season fruit and veg. that have to be flown in, buy clothing and bedding that isn’t 100% natural fibres but most likely contain polyester, buy toys and household items made of plastic and garden furniture also made of plastic and not natural wood. It was also suggested that shingle was more eco friendly than fake grass, but that would also need weed suppression fabric, (we have plenty of farmers fields nearby that are full of dandelions, buttercups etc. so I don’t need them in my garden, )underneath which is also plastic and wouldn’t solve the problem of rain water laying like a lake over the garden. How about we live and let live?

Just stop with this whataboutery. It isn't relevant. Perhaps you could campaign for better public transport in rural areas then we wouldn't need a (modest) car.

Teenylittlefella · 02/01/2026 18:49

Well, my neighbour (same problem with high trees and North facing) had several tonnes of concrete poured over her garden instead, not a single plant or flower in her plot. I really don't believe my garden is the worse option.

My fake grass might be tacky and an "abomination" but you aren't on here complaining about all the people concreting their front garden into a parking space. We haven't done this and actually have shingle and raised veg beds at the front of our house (because it's sunnier).

Fake grass is the height of tackiness

YouCarWashCunt · 02/01/2026 16:10

No one with an ounce of taste would ever have plastic grass. They can try and justify until the cows come home, it’s still the ultimate marker of utter naffness.

Hahahaha!
I'm sure there are some parts of your life that others would find naff.... it's all relative....

I don’t understand this mindset at all. Clover is rich, soft green foliage with lovely little flowers. What looks awful about it? Is it because you’ve internalised the idea that anything capable of growing naturally in the UK must be a weed? Are plants only beautiful if you’ve paid someone for them?

looselegs · 02/01/2026 19:07

RampantIvy · 02/01/2026 15:12

Or just chose another more environmentally friendly low maintenance option?

You are being defensive because you know that fake grass is dreadful stuff.

Not at all. I love my fake grass. It's not a big area but it means the kids I look after can get outside and play whereas, if I still had my old lawn and thick clay soil, it would be under water till Easter!
I will just add though...the rest of my garden us full of plants, shrubs, trees and flowers that attract tons of wildlife. We have bug hotels, bee baths, bird feeders and flowers that attract lots of bees and butterflies.

looselegs · 02/01/2026 19:11

LlynTegid · 02/01/2026 15:02

So the reasons you give cover maybe 5% at most of the fake grass you see.

Whether fake grass or paving over a front garden, it's not just wildlife that are affected. Less space for water to be absorbed, could in some cases contribute to flooding.

Paving over is far more, often because of people with multiple cars or an SUV that they cannot drive properly.

Our garden has an underground stream, and getting rid of the natural grass actually helped because our clay soil is so bad that not even the grass would grow properly. The artificial grass is on a thick base of bark chippings and actually drains a hundred times better than it did with the clay soil...

That's actuality the whole point of the Internet and why it's so popular!

lovecheesymash · 02/01/2026 22:06

We also have a ‘modest’ car : we also have trees, hedges, pond, flowering plants , shrubs bird houses, many bird tables, bird feeders which are constantly being refilled, hedgehog feeding stations;also being used throughout spring and summer and hedgehog hibernation houses which are all currently occupied. But apparently all of this is irrelevant because we have…….An Artificial Grass Lawn!
The amount of vitriol posted on this thread against any one who chooses to make this choice is astounding and reads more like school yard name calling.

This is the case for one house on our street. The owner pops out to hoover it from time to time.

Watching someone hoovering grass would be 10/10 people watching though!

I don’t think it’s as tacky as Botox lips and tattoos but it’s really bad. I looked around a house with fake grass once and my partner and I could barely keep straight faces. Just no way. No way on earth would we even consider it.

Did the owners have notox, duck lips and tattoos 🤔

@Blasterplaster I afford myself a smile. I am not a fan of plastic grass but I realised a while back that my neighbour really does think it’s a like an outdoor room which must be clean. There are some plants terrified around the edges. Those don’t get hoovered

LVhandbagsatdawn · 02/01/2026 22:25

I actually think it's sick.

Covering up the environment with plastic because it's more convenient.

It's beyond rational comprehension.

Blasterplaster · 02/01/2026 22:37

I saw an advert for some sort of ‘pet friendly’ garden and it seemed to be something to do with fake grass. You’d have thought fake grass would be worse for pets. Eating plastic and getting dog muck in your plastic too. Yuck.

I don't even give my dogs plastic bowls and plates to eat off, to benefit their health. The less plastic, the better.
