As I am watching the 1995 version on Drama and thinking I would have been cast as Mary for my teenage priggishness, pedantry, lack of social skill and personal charm, I wonder how other fine Mumsnetters would cast themselves should any other production be made however unlikely that may be.

My apologies if this has been attempted before or is a dreary New Years idea for entertainment. Naturally my curiousity extends to the male members of the cast and the lower classes who are ever with us.

Whilst I would love to be Lizzie or even Mr Darcy, sadly I think I'm probably Mrs Bennet.
Whilst I'm not trying to marry anybody off, because we home educate I do spend a large amount of time and energy scanning the internet and our local area for potential educational opportunities and encouraging my offspring towards them.

QueenOfThorns · 01/01/2026 14:56

In my younger days, probably Lydia, unfortunately!

These days, probably Charlotte Lucas.

Connected1 · 01/01/2026 14:57

I'm definitely Miss Elizabeth Bennett for my beauty, charm & wit. Also I can only play the pianoforte "quite well".

ShesTheAlbatross · 01/01/2026 14:58

Jane Bennet probably.

MaxandMeg · 01/01/2026 14:59

Lady Catherine De Burgh. Obviously.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 01/01/2026 14:59

I was going to say Mary, or perhaps Kitty. Watching the fun from the sidelines, but basically sensible. That best describes Charlotte though. And I do indeed encourage my husband to pursue his various interests.

Hatty65 · 01/01/2026 14:59

Probably Mr Bennett. I'm impatient, sarcastic and don't tolerate fools very well. I'm also self centred and pretty lazy.

Arlanymor · 01/01/2026 15:00

I'm Marianne in Sense and Sensibility according to my dad... and I do look a bit like Kate Winslet in the film!

DarkEyedSailor · 01/01/2026 15:00

Lydia, when I was younger.

nonevernotever · 01/01/2026 15:02

I'm probably Mary, but aspiring to be Charlotte

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 01/01/2026 15:05

Charlotte

Createausername1970 · 01/01/2026 15:06

I feel like Hill (was that her name?) The overworked house keeper at everyone's beck and call 🤩

I am so pleased we are assembling a good cast already. I am just starting the Mr Collins episode and realising I have so much in common. Poor Mary she was so obviously the appropriate partner for him - they would never be bored together - but was squashed by Charlotte getting in there so quickly. So hasty, so vulgar.

Who would you be in our non-binary times? Dare anyone take on Mr Darcy's persona and just £100,00 per year?

MyBirthdayMonth · 01/01/2026 15:13

I'd like to say Elizabeth, but I'm probably more like Mr Darcy in his unreconstructed phase.

Shitmonger · 01/01/2026 15:16

My father and I have always been likened to Mr Bennett and Elizabeth by family and friends. And frankly my mother bears a distinct resemblance to Mrs Bennett.

I don’t have any sisters though, only three brothers. I’d have liked to have a Jane. 😁

Inthewrongtimezone · 01/01/2026 15:18

I think I am Charlotte.

Chateaudiaries · 01/01/2026 15:19

Jane I think. Sweet, kind, people pleaser, pretty and a good marriage. Happy with her lot. Doesn’t go looking for drama. Unlike some of my relatives….

TimSamandLulu · 01/01/2026 15:20

Definitely Mary.

Miranda65 · 01/01/2026 15:22

I would love to be Lizzie, of course, but I'm more likely to be Mary or Charlotte Lucas.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 01/01/2026 15:23

Another Mary here. In a world of my own, lots of opinions that I'll share at length given very little encouragement, and with the social skills of a brick. Oh, and I sing badly in the car in front of my teenagers' friends.

Overtheatlantic · 01/01/2026 15:27

Miss Bingley of course.

Dappy777 · 01/01/2026 15:28

Like so many others I wish I could say Lizzie (possibly the most loveable female character in literature), but probably her father - cynical, sarcastic, a bit jaded and remote, but good at heart.

Tacocat2 · 01/01/2026 15:32

Well, I thought that I was Elizabeth but really I was Lydia. Now I’m probably Mrs Bennett.

tempnew · 01/01/2026 15:32

Want to be Lizzy but am probably Mrs Gardiner - calm and always wanting to do the right thing.

DisappearingGirl · 01/01/2026 15:33

A lot of people saying they are Mary has reminded me that I want to watch The Other Bennet Sister when it's on TV (I've not read the book)
