As I am watching the 1995 version on Drama and thinking I would have been cast as Mary for my teenage priggishness, pedantry, lack of social skill and personal charm, I wonder how other fine Mumsnetters would cast themselves should any other production be made however unlikely that may be.

My apologies if this has been attempted before or is a dreary New Years idea for entertainment. Naturally my curiousity extends to the male members of the cast and the lower classes who are ever with us.

Mrs. Gardiner.

Beeinalily · 01/01/2026 15:42

I'm a Mary too OP. So to speak.

PainterInPeril · 01/01/2026 15:44

I'm watching it again right now! I'd probably be Mary. I'm on episode 3 at the moment...the visit to Hunsford. I kind of admire Charlotte for knowing what she wanted, and being contented with her lot. Even though her 'lot' included Mr Collins and Lady Catherine.😬 After all, it would only be a matter of time before she became mistress of Longbourn. And then she'd be able to help her family. Very clever woman.

Rictasmorticia · 01/01/2026 16:29

Charlotte Lucas. On that subject, has anyone read the other Bennett sister? I really enjoyed it and I see it is going to be on TV soon.

In Emma I am Isabella

Stompythedinosaur · 01/01/2026 16:31

I'd be Charlotte Lucas. I'd make the sensible choice.

DryMunro · 01/01/2026 16:41

Georgiana Darcy

TheKeatingFive · 01/01/2026 16:43

Miss Bingley. Complete bitch.

orangewasp · 01/01/2026 16:46

Yet another Mary - plain, bookish and horribly un-musical.

Ladamesansmerci · 01/01/2026 16:47

I think I'm probably most likely Jane in temperament overall. I defo have some Mary and Lizzie in me. I don't relate at all to Lydia or Kitty.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 01/01/2026 17:06

Kitty. Overshadowed and ill.

Barrellturn · 01/01/2026 17:09

Probably kitty. Desperately trying to be fun and fit in but ultimately not as brave as my sisters and I'll step into line. Bit of a sheep.

MujeresLibres · 01/01/2026 17:10

Another Mary here. Closer to Mrs Bennett now, not in terms of marrying off my kid, just a bit of a worrier.

CanadianJohn2 · 01/01/2026 17:12

I'd like to think I'm Mr Bennet, but I bet people think I'm more like Mr Collins.

Foggytree · 01/01/2026 17:13

Another Mary. Lacking in charm, social skills and musical ability. Also quite try hard in younger days.

YankSplaining · 01/01/2026 17:14

Mr Darcy. I don’t always have great social skills, but I’m devoted to and protective of people I love, and I express myself better in writing than I do by talking to people.

Sequinsoneverythingplease · 01/01/2026 17:16

Lydia when I was in my teens & twenties 🤦🏼‍♀️

Now? Probably Mr Darcy when he was judgmental and bored 😁

Thepeopleversuswork · 01/01/2026 17:20

I’m probably going to sound like the contrary arsehole here but one of the reasons I have always struggled with Pride and Prejudice, brilliant though it absolutely is, is that I have never been able to conceive that it would have been possible to marry for money.

I was never “marriagable” even when young, even less so now. Jane Austen is quite unrelatable when you are not conventionally attractive and have no money.

Lavenderandbrown · 01/01/2026 17:24

Caroline Bingley… competitive and sometimes bitchy.

I am so pleased we are assembling a good cast already. I am just starting the Mr Collins episode and realising I have so much in common. Poor Mary she was so obviously the appropriate partner for him - they would never be bored together - but was squashed by Charlotte getting in there so quickly. So hasty, so vulgar.

Who would you be in our non-binary times? Dare anyone take on Mr Darcy's persona and just £100,00 per year?

They have a connection in The Other Bennet Sister when she goes to stay with Charlotte

Rictasmorticia · 01/01/2026 17:28

DisappearingGirl · 01/01/2026 15:33

A lot of people saying they are Mary has reminded me that I want to watch The Other Bennet Sister when it's on TV (I've not read the book)

The book is great

ArmySurplusHamster · 01/01/2026 17:31

Mr Bennet, I fear.

BCBird · 01/01/2026 17:35

I read a book the once where there was a questionnaire to determine which character u would be. I was a combination of Jane and Lizzie😁. Love Jane Austen. If you ever get the opportunity to go to the Jane Austen festival in Bath i can thoroughly recommend it. Dress up and imagine you are in Regency England- heavenly.

StrawberrySquash · 01/01/2026 17:36

Connected1 · 01/01/2026 14:57

I'm definitely Miss Elizabeth Bennett for my beauty, charm & wit. Also I can only play the pianoforte "quite well".

You are tolerable I suppose. But not handsome enough to tempt me. 😉

Actually, given my current slumped on the sofa position, I'm Mr Hurst.

Downdowndownunder · 01/01/2026 17:40

kitty. Overlooked, quiet and not really worth noticing. Good girl who does what she’s told.

hardtocare · 01/01/2026 17:43

Charlotte Lucas I’m sad to say. I’d love to be one of the Bennett’s but facts are facts
