Anyone else spending new year's eve on their own?

I have a toddler who will be put to bed between 7-8 and my husband works on oil rigs so he is away.

My friends are either ill with this horrible sickness bug that's going round or they are able to get out and about later as their children are older.

I'll have a glass of wine and some nice snacks while watching the telly but I feel a bit down about it for some reason.

Ah, Its only a day, dont give it credence to make you upset. Don't vocalise the unhappiness or think about it too much (makes it worse). Look for the positive.

Your situation determines what needs to happen today, unfortunately you cant do anything about it this year, there will be others so just do what you need to do to accept it and make the day as happy as it can be, a nice dinner? a bath after the children are in bed? I dont know what you like to do but do what you can to make it happen.

Make some plans that you ca. look forward too? even if its simple like a walk in the park.

Waves, my husband is offshore on tankers so it’s me and the teenager tonight. He’s doing god knows what with friends and I plan on nice pjs, nice snacks and a nice cup of tea (taxi duty) and a good book. I’m going to enjoy every moment of it.

vanillalattes · 31/12/2025 10:47

Me mostly likely - DH is unwell and in bed so I’ll be on the sofa with the cats and dog!

Gettingbysomehow · 31/12/2025 10:48

Yes me because I'll have been working in minor injuries all day and I'll be too knackered to go out. I'm just going to relax at home and watch tv.
It's just a date as far as I'm concerned.

HashtagShitShop · 31/12/2025 10:51

Yes, always am as I'm a 24/7 carer and the person I care for will have gone to bed about 9/10.

I will be watching TV, chatting to friends via WhatsApp who are in similar boats and eating snacks, drinking a couple beers or a baileys or 2 and glad I'm not on the middle of the crush of people trying to get served over priced drinks in bars and pubs.

It does help I'm no fan of new years eve though I must admit. It's just another year in the same situation.

Daffodilsareyellow1 · 31/12/2025 10:52

Me! My partner will be going out and I will be looking after our son...who will be in bed before midnight. I have always hated new year.

StrawberrySquash · 31/12/2025 11:00

I will be. Wouldn't mind a party, but have mostly forgotten about the actual date. It's always a bit of an anticlimax, midnight, so I'll probably be in bed by then.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/12/2025 11:03

TBH after I was early 20s (long ago!) I usually found it a bit of a let-down anyway - all that hype and build-up…
Not to mention nowadays, having to pay a fortune to go anywhere - which is bound to be horribly crowded anyway.

RisingSunn · 31/12/2025 11:05

Yes - DH away - and kids will be in bed and I have a huge bottle of Baileys and snacks. Bliss.

TheCurious0range · 31/12/2025 11:08

DH is keen to go to a local pub/social club this evening I'd much rather stay at home! I think we'll go for a few hours and be home by 8 ish, DS doesn't do well with late nights and we've got plans tomorrow

Iheartmysmart · 31/12/2025 11:08

I’m on my own but am not too bothered as I don’t really like new year. My kitten was spayed yesterday and she’s a bit under the weather so I’ll be settling down on the sofa with her for some cuddles. There’s a bottle of fizz in the fridge and some nibbles but expect we’ll both be asleep before midnight.

Rozendantz · 31/12/2025 11:09

Me - and I'm really looking forward to it! DH is working at the London fireworks (is already there) and has taken DC with him, I'm going to watch crap and sleep as early as I choose...

ocolo · 31/12/2025 11:16

Tomorrow life will go on as usual. Same for Christmas, thats gone too and all that prep, for what really? Just another day!

I'm not a fan of all this forced fun and prep so I ignore it and I feel no different. Life is very liberating when youre a grinch like me 😊

HundredMilesAnHour · 31/12/2025 11:20

I’m on my own and quite happy about it. I was invited to a dinner party but prefer to stay home tucked under my heated throw on the sofa. Sad but true! I was away for 5 nights over Christmas visiting family and friends and that was pretty hectic so I’m loving having some time home alone with no need to go anywhere.

IsThisTheWaytoSlamMyPillow · 31/12/2025 11:20

No, because no one will bloody well let me!! I’ve always found NYE a bit depressing TBH and would prefer a usual Wednesday night (TV, bed, book, early night etc) but am being ‘encouraged’ to go out by very well-meaning family. Seems rude to dig in and say no because their encouragement is coming from a good heart.

ThirdStorm · 31/12/2025 11:41

I am. It’s my preference. I’m planning a relaxing hot bath and PJs early evening followed by a nice dinner and Prosecco. I planning a die hard movie marathon too!

AutumnClouds · 31/12/2025 11:44

Yes, my partner is working, I’ll be baby wrangling then falling asleep exhausted. I think big plans for NYE are almost always disappointing anyway, I’m going to lean into the fresh start feeling of January instead, get some new healthy habits going.

SENcatsandfish · 31/12/2025 11:47

Nothing planned. 2 kids with SEN. Might get us a Chinese later. My son has had 5hrs sleep so its going to be a tough day

Kingscallops · 31/12/2025 11:47

I did christmas days and NYE on my own for several years. Loved the former because I'd hosted too many previous Christmases. Found good films, bottle of wine and snacks on NYE. Pleased nobody but myself. Many people aren't bothering to go out now. Happy new year 🎉

thegirlwithapearl · 31/12/2025 11:49

I'm in hospital and I doubt I'll get out today. I'm looking forward to some sleeping tablets and to be nicely zonked out when the new year rolls in!

randomchap · 31/12/2025 12:10

Have your own celebration when your husband is next on shore. Go out for a meal, get your favourite takeaway, whatever you fancy.

Plan something to look forward to

Mum2Fergus · 31/12/2025 12:11

Me! DS has a party and DH is working. Suits me fine…my Dsis passed suddenly yesterday so glad of the time alone .

DinoLil · 31/12/2025 12:14

So sorry for your loss ❤️ 🫂

TeeBee · 31/12/2025 12:24

When your children ask to start having NYE parties in your house, you’ll look back fondly on this quiet evening in watching your favourite programs. I wish you a very happy 2026.
