All my historically fat friends have gone thin this year

1000 replies

donttellscotty · 30/12/2025 15:43

Okay maybe not ALL of them, but a few friends/acquaintances who have been very big for years and years, tried everything but could never shift the slightest bit of weight, have all had dramatic transformations and shed many stones over the past year. It’s just becoming expected now whenever I see another formerly large acquaintance or relative pop up on my feed with a super slim selfie.

I (rightly or wrongly) suspect it’s got to be WLIs or similar? Although all are adamant it’s a strict diet only. Just to add there is NOTHING wrong with jabs at all, and I’m aware it’s absolutely none of my business, and I sound mean but I wouldn’t actually discuss this in RL. It just got me thinking that being overweight might be obsolete in a few years?

Anyone else noticing this trend with people they know?

I don't know her size but possibly size 12 or 14? Is that obese?

What does it matter? They were big enough for you to mention it. Their weight was a medical issue.

Rewis · 30/12/2025 16:26

Obesity won't be obsolete in few years. Only a very small percentage of population are on weightloss meds.

Also people won't be hiebst about it until it becomes actually mainstream and socially acceptable. People are still very mean about it and there is a definite ranking on who has done it right and who is a cheater with an easy at out.

Wondering if 2026 will be the year all the fat-then-thin people become fat again as they can't keep up the expenditure.

Well aren’t you a peach.

Ineedanewsofa · 30/12/2025 16:27

@MungoforPresident as an ex medical researcher I’d expect you to have had a cursory glance at the heaps of research before commenting on a public forum - MJ is not ‘just’ an appetite suppressant, it is a GLP1 AND a GIP antagonist, effecting how the body processes sugars, how it uses insulin etc. I strongly suspect the next body of evidence will be supporting claims regarding it’s seemingly miracle effects on inflammatory issues which will hopefully open up the possibility of ‘off label’ prescriptions for those who aren’t necessarily obese but do suffer from these issues.
All this judgement couched as concern for ‘long term side effects’ is incredibly dull…

I am one of those people 🤣 lost 7 stone this year with Mounjaro. I get asked all the time if its the jabs and I always say no because, quite frankly, its not anyone elses business!

Edited

But isn't there a difference between saying it's none of anyone's business (perfectly reasonable) and lying? Why lie, why not just say; 'None of your business?' It's the evasion I don't understand. Similarly people who use steroids to build muscle and then go on Instagram etc and claim it's all natural are creating a false narrative. I appreciate in your instance there's no direct harm, but indirectly isn't it creating a false narrative? And to what end? Just my thoughts. Cheerio.

HelpMeUnpickThis · 30/12/2025 16:25

@Flowers999

Why not just tell the truth though? Why lie?

Everyone is going to think it’s jabs anyway - all you are doing is making yourself look dishonest.

I dont understand why people lie so easily.

Because weight and medication are something personal. Why do you have a need to know? That's the real issue here.

SwingTheMonkey · 30/12/2025 16:28

SnoopyPajamas · 30/12/2025 16:20

I don't know if that's a fair comparison. Plenty of women discuss in depth the side effects of the pill, and that's not a new medication by any means. Ditto antidepressants. And there's always a discussion when someone is planning to trial a new therapy for something like cancer. There were protests held against puberty blockers just this month.

People do care about this stuff, and some of the pancreatic side effects being reported are worth taking seriously.

Would you seriously ask someone trialling a new cancer drug if they’re concerned about the side effects?

Because you said they were obese. I personally don't think a size 12 or 14 is obese. I said they were lovely and now look almost skeletal. I am concerned she is unwell.

reallyneedareset · 30/12/2025 16:29

I have a naturally tall and willowy colleague that is positively frothing at the mouth when she hears someone in the large office that we work in is on it. Her weight / slim figure is how she defines herself and she walks thought she was something special because of it. Nothing like WLI to suddenly level the playing field! She’s no longer the slimmest who could just wear what she likes and be ‘different’ in revealing or tight fit clothing. She’s raging!

Yuja · 30/12/2025 16:29

I’ve always been thin so I don’t have any skin in the WLI game. However, finding it difficult to understand why people deny it? Several of you on here have said you wouldn’t admit it - why not?
are people really going to stay on them for the rest of their lives? I guess you have to if it suppresses hunger, as you’ve not learnt to ignore hunger or push past it.

Why can’t people stop asking others about their personal medical details and mind their own fucking business? Then nobody would have to lie or say anything at all.

reallyneedareset · 30/12/2025 16:30

She harps on about the side effects but drinks like a fish every weekend!

I can see why people wouldn’t tell anyone… because of the judgement that is always so evident on threads like these.

Bloozie · 30/12/2025 16:30

Only my husband, son and sister know I have lost weight using Mounjaro. I cannot be done with the judgement/curiosity of others. I was very overweight. Very. Now I’m simply fat - I’ll keep going. But it’s such a personal journey - and one I’m lucky to be able to afford…. No one owes anyone their weight loss story.

Anything which reduces the devastation obesity wreaks upon the body should be applauded.

Stopping overeating really helps I've found.

I do if the conversation gets round to it 🤷

I was size 12/14 when I started on Mounjaro, I was in the obese category.

Size 12/14 and tall?

I think maybe you don't know what counts as obese. You also haven't mentioned their height. A bmi of 30 or higher is obese. You don't have to be huge.

It’s really very simple. The medications I take are none of anyone else’s business and people should stop thinking they have any right to any knowledge of my personal medical information simply because it’s to do with me being a fatty.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 30/12/2025 16:32

I'm a bit on the fence with it all. I'm type 2 diabetic, and have lost nearly 5 stone on my own thanks to a very supportive and encouraging GP surgery/diabetic nurse. I'm off most of my meds but I still need to lose about 3 more stone to be at target and it's proving very tough. But the surgery have flat out said no to any kind of WLI as I don't meet their targets and I'm not risking doing it privately without medical supervision (I'm on dapaglifozin). So I've bought a peleton bike and am actually really enjoying getting fitter. Even if my weight hasn't budged Hmm

I do wonder what the long term effects of these WLI's are going to be in years to come for those who don't need them for diabetes. Your pancreas is pretty precious. And if I wonder how many users of them even give that a second thought....

If someone is obese or not is defined by their BMI, not what size clothes they were. I was medically obese (BMI 30) at a size 12-14.

KnewYearKnewMe · 30/12/2025 16:33

@I8toys

for me, WLI are certainly long term,. I’ve been overweight and then obese since I was a young child. The jabs are ‘managing’ my obesity, not curing it, so I will be taking a low-ish dose very long term.

a bit like high blood pressure medication is for life in many cases, I suppose.

But on this thread it suggests everyone assumes it anyway? So why not admit it? If it’s nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about then it shouldn’t matter.
