All my historically fat friends have gone thin this year

Okay maybe not ALL of them, but a few friends/acquaintances who have been very big for years and years, tried everything but could never shift the slightest bit of weight, have all had dramatic transformations and shed many stones over the past year. It’s just becoming expected now whenever I see another formerly large acquaintance or relative pop up on my feed with a super slim selfie.

I (rightly or wrongly) suspect it’s got to be WLIs or similar? Although all are adamant it’s a strict diet only. Just to add there is NOTHING wrong with jabs at all, and I’m aware it’s absolutely none of my business, and I sound mean but I wouldn’t actually discuss this in RL. It just got me thinking that being overweight might be obsolete in a few years?

Anyone else noticing this trend with people they know?

3 of my friends are on or have been on WLI. All have lost significant amounts of weight. One has had terrible side effects though. I'm a few stone overweight and don't judge people at all but I wouldn't have them even if I could afford to do so as I'd be worried about side effects.

Luckyingame · 30/12/2025 16:08

Obviously controversial topic, but speaking for myself, I'm surprised people are not more concerned/scared about the side effects.

AliceMcK · 30/12/2025 16:08

Not sure it will be obsolete many can’t afford the jabs and they don’t work for everyone.

I lost a lot of weight on them but had to stop as I can’t afford them any more. Although every dr and consultant I meet would love to prescribe them to me I don’t currently meet the criteria and I’m now getting bigger again, so maybe pretty soon I will be diabetic and will get them that way 🤷‍♀️

I know quite a few people either on or tried them. Several relatives due to diabetes have come off them because they couldn’t cope with the side effects. One cousin was paying for it but has ended up in hospital very unwell can no longer take them and will have years of recovery ahead of her. Her DH who was prescribed them is doing really well, loosing weight and massive health improvements. I have a friend claiming her weight loss is lifestyle change but I don’t belive her for 1 second that she suddenly after years of lifestyle changes has started loosing weight. I don’t know why she’s lying but that’s her choice. I’ve known her over 40yrs so know her well and I’d never put her on the spot, she will have her reasons. Also another friend who was not affected by it at all, it did nothing for her. She’s now lost the weight by gastric bypass surgery and looks amazing.

I think it’s a fantastic thing that this drug is now out there but like everything it might be perfect for many but not everyone and there are always going to be people who ruin it for others, like celebrities who abuse it then cry all over the media it’s a bad thing making harder for people who genuinely need it to get it.

Yes and lots of people who were already slim are quite frankly now emaciated

I hear the online suppliers now insist you provide dated photos of your enormous bulk plus photo i.d. before they will prescribe it.

TipTopHat · 30/12/2025 16:10

PurpleCoo · 30/12/2025 16:06

I'm on WLI and have ALSO worked my socks off increasing exercise and stopping awful habits. The two things aren't mutually exclusive you know. It's no use going on WLI and changing nothing.

I didnt say it was did i?

My point was that everyone assumes I have used WLI's which pisses me off because i havent!

KnewYearKnewMe · 30/12/2025 16:10

I’m 55 and have lost 5 stone on Mounjaro, I’m totally open about it, it’s been a miracle for me.

been taking it since October 2024 and plan to do so long term.

i have several previously overweight friends who have done the same. I think it was my openness that inspired some of them to try it too.

we now do a weekly Park run and are so much more active, healthy and happy.

I think there’s a fairly hefty black market you can buy it on. I would go near that route but I think if you want to get your hands on it and you’re not overweight you can although goodness knows what you’re actually getting

You have to stay on it even if you've lost the weight? Is it a maintenance thing?

Aimtodobetter · 30/12/2025 16:11

I’m all for the jabs but I lost my weight through a brutal second pregnancy and I find the timing super annoying because everyone will assume I took the jabs when actually I couldn’t have even if I’d wanted to due to back to back pregnancies and breastfeeding!!

Fizbosshoes · 30/12/2025 16:11

There would surely still be overweight people who either don't qualify (because theyre not overweight enough) for a prescription, cant afford it or have bad side effects.

The thing I dont understand about WLI is that you can still get them prescribed if you are a healthy weight, but started at a much higher bmi....but not if thats your starting point. I read a thread about someone who had got their bmi to about 21 iirc but wanted to keep using it until it was 19. But if your starting point was eg bmi 23 you wouldn't be prescribed it at all....even if that was heavy for your frame and you struggled to lose weight

MyBrightPeer · 30/12/2025 16:11

Shouldn’t people be scared of/aware of the side effects of obesity too though @Luckyingame? Losing weight has significant health benefits.

Luckyingame · 30/12/2025 16:08

Why would I be scared of the side effects of WLI any more than I’d be scared of any other relatively new to the market drug that I was using for a medical problem? Why do people care so much about the ‘side effects’ when other drugs are released to the market constantly and nobody bats an eye lid.
I wonder… 🤔

robinsinthesnow · 30/12/2025 15:58

How do you think people lose weight on the injections? 😂

Let's not pretend it's not 100x easier on the jabs, hence why they are so successful!

Cornflakes44 · 30/12/2025 16:12

I read somewhere asking someone if they lost weight on jabs is like asking if they got pregnant through IVF. It’s not really relevant or anyone’s business.

mydogisanidiott · 30/12/2025 16:12

Yes ,it’s bloody brilliant all these people at much healthier.

all these people have been struggling to lose weight and decided to invest money into their health. They look and feel better and are more productive and less likely to have co morbidities and diseases of obesity

I am one of those people.

Mounjaro has released me from being suffocated by fat. Thin people just do not understand that being obese isnt always a lifestyle choice and that losing weight isn’t always successful. Despite trying.

SmileyMoonset · 30/12/2025 16:12

It’s fascinating.

We judge people if they are overweight.

Seriously judge them, there’s research that indicates that fat people are discriminated against in getting hired/promoted.

People make also sorts of judgements about people’s moral character if they are fat. “Fat and lazy”, “fat and stupid”, “fat and boring” etc etc

So now we’ve found a wonderful new way to simultaneously judge those who stay fat (for not taking the drugs), those who lose weight via drugs (taking the easy way out) AND those who lose weight the old fashioned way (because they are clearly lying about the drugs).

The whole thing is enough to make me extremely disappointed in the character of lots people.

Helpwithdivorce · 30/12/2025 16:13

You’re not wrong everyone is on them. Even the people who weren’t particularly fat

somanychristmaslights · 30/12/2025 16:13

Flowers999 · 30/12/2025 15:48

I am one of those people 🤣 lost 7 stone this year with Mounjaro. I get asked all the time if its the jabs and I always say no because, quite frankly, its not anyone elses business!

Edited

7 stone is amazing!!!!

MardyMillylala · 30/12/2025 16:13

I know at least 8 people who have lost a significant amount of weight this year & 6 of those have used WLI's. All have been completely upfront about it & have no regrets apart from minor side effects. It's had a positive impact on their self esteem & if I'm completely honest they all look healthier.
Myself, I have lost 3 stone by cutting out crap & drinking more water as I got declined for mounjaro due to having a pre-existing side effect. Can't deny that at one point I was envious of those on mountjaro as I felt that I had to do it the harder way.

Lovelyview · 30/12/2025 16:14

Just out of interest, if you have lost a lot of weight do you want people to notice/comment or would you rather not? Is it ok to say something like 'you look well' or is it better to just not mention someone's appearance at all?

2026NewTricks · 30/12/2025 16:14

SwingTheMonkey · 30/12/2025 16:02

I don’t get asked, thankfully but I wouldn’t own up if I did. Medications I take are none of anyone else’s business. I did have an acquaintance post a rather horrible thing on fb about all these people she sees on WLI and compared it to injecting class A recreational drugs, shortly after she’d seen me, which was nice…

Wow some people are hideous.

I have a friend using WLI and she isn’t dropping stones and stones. She’s struggling and I feel for her. Spending that money and still miserable. It’s not a magic wand solution for everyone.

Superhansrantowindsor · 30/12/2025 16:16

I would love to try WLI but the cost is putting me off.

ArseSkinForAFriend · 30/12/2025 16:17

YANBU

I've notice a lot of my friends and also their overweight teens are losing weight, which is fantastic for them.

It's none of my business how they've done it, I'm just pleased for them.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 30/12/2025 16:18

I would. Say no as it's clearly obvious people

Personally I don’t mind someone saying I’m looking great but I cringe at a direct mention of my weight because to me, it feels like someone is saying ‘cor, weren’t you fat’! I know they aren’t necessarily saying that but it’s how it feels.
