Mum annoyed that my husband fell asleep at 8:30pm on boxing day after over-indulging

Hi,

Just wanted to get people's thoughts on this please.

My mum came over on Boxing day and stayed the night. My husband spent most of the afternoon preparing a meal for us all and drank a little too much whilst doing so.
This meant he missed out on the games we played with the children and he was fast asleep on the sofa by 8.30pm snoring extremelty loudly. I was a little embarrased as was sitting there with my mum listening to him snoring.

When i spoke to mum the following day after she had gone home she said she felt very embarrased and uncomfortable about the situation. She was the guest and he shouldnt have drunk so much that he fell asleep in that state. She said she will not be texting my husband to thank him for the meal he cooked.

What are peoples thoughts?

He cooked you a meal and had snooze on Boxing Day. LTB. Nothing else for it.

This! Falling asleep on the sofa in front of the TV in the afternoon on Boxing Day, especially after cooking the meal, is surely a Christmas tradition! I would have just decorated him in tinsel…

Muddyevil · 29/12/2025 20:07

Christ on a bike. Hubby falls asleep at my parents many times. I wake him up after a while despite parents saying leave him he obviously needs it. Yes, he overindulged but was prob tired from prepping and socialising etc. I think their reaction was a bit weird. As long as he doesn't have form for doing it at special events then leave him be.

He did a prawn cocktail at lunchtime with bits then a homemade beef lasagne for dinner and saugages and mash for the children

He wasnt drunk during the meal that i noticed.

He shouldn't have have got got so pissed &, if she is so much a Lady, she shouldn't have noticed, ie gone on about it . All scores settled, 2026 soon!

Knackered from cooking?

I started preparing food for Christmas Day at about midday on Christmas Eve. So yes, it takes a long time when you make everything from scratch. I pace myself, and go and sit down in between, but it can be knackering.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/12/2025 20:14

He didn't fall asleep - He passed out. 🙄

@Angelcake1991 is this usual?
It isn't too unusual for someone's mum to say it was poor form. It was. Your mum still owes a Thank you for the dinner and hosting.
Are there issues between them?

Haha these comments 😂 God forbid a man takes a nap after a long busy day, I can't believe she's so mad by it. Surely that's a haha moment, not a let's be disgusted moment lol. People blow my mind honestly. Id hate to live with half.of you 😂

Hungrysalmon87 · 29/12/2025 20:14

People work all year, prepare for Christmas, get to the big day and then overdulge and it's perfectly normal to snoze on the sofa after Christmas dinner. Surely your mum knows her SIL well enough that he feels comfortable in her company. Falling asleep early is not the end of the world!

Theslummymummy · 29/12/2025 20:16

Jesus christ, why are people saying its embarrassing, you're a family aren't you?!

Your Mum is ungrateful

DeftGoldHedgehog · 29/12/2025 20:20

If I'm tired a single glass of wine could knock me out. When the kids were little I'd regularly go to bed just after they did on a Friday evening. I regularly struggle to stay awake watching a TV programme starting at 9pm. There doesn't have to be a lot of alcohol involved for someone to be spark out on Boxing Day. The whole idea of Christmas is being around people who don't give a monkeys if you fall asleep.

Emmz1510 · 29/12/2025 20:22

Your mum is over the top. So what if he fell asleep in his own home after overindulging and cooking for everyone? Isn’t that par for the course at Christmas? He still deserves a thanks for cooking.

BlueYazoo · 29/12/2025 20:22

Christ he’s not allowed to feel tired, cook a dinner, over indulge and fall asleep in his own living room at Christmas?

DeftGoldHedgehog · 29/12/2025 20:22

I'd have told my mum she was bang out of order for saying that. Remind her of it when she nods off in company.

DiscoFoxTrot · 29/12/2025 20:23

Your mum needs to relax and not expect fine dining service at Boxing Day family dinner. The cook has consumed a little more than he should but she either enjoyed the meal or didn’t! Within the family this nonsense should be squashed.

Jade247 · 29/12/2025 20:23

Your husband fell asleep in his own home ! Hardly a crime - jeez poor guy give him a break !

jjW29 · 29/12/2025 20:27

I wouldn’t class having my Mum over for dinner as hosting guests!! How is her SIL falling asleep embarrassing and making her uncomfortable?
Christmas is a stressful time and everyone is tired

Floundering66 · 29/12/2025 20:28

This was a very normal Christmas Day/ Boxing Day in my house growing up except my dad didn't cook the dinner before nodding off. It was never a problem - we used to laugh and continue to have fun. He would wake up after an hour or two though and play games/ watch a film.

Except this man had cooked…

reversingdumptruckwithnotyreson · 29/12/2025 20:30

Eh, different people have different needs. My partner sleeps a lot more than I do, a half day outing will wipe him out. He’s currently fast asleep and we were only out from 1pm til about 6pm.

I probably would have tried to get him to go nap in the bedroom if I were you, but if you couldn’t who cares? It’s his house.

katyb84 · 29/12/2025 20:31

Are all you people not read in her posts on purpose and just repeating the same thing constantly , she clearly states she tried to wake him up several times , imagine not bothering to read it then calling her a lousy wife for not waking him.

WonderfulSmith · 29/12/2025 20:35

Isn’t falling asleep after dinner over Christmas the whole point of being a dad?

CelestialCandyfloss · 29/12/2025 20:38

I mean, it's pretty annoying of your husband, but a bit of an overreaction on your mum's side. Also rude of her not to say thanks for the meal. But couldn't you have just woken him up?

AngryBird6122 · 29/12/2025 20:42

Your mum sounds incredibly uptight.
If that was DH thought I would have woken him and sent him to bed!
