To think “girl math” and “girl dinner” infantilise women?

They’re marketed as empowering but to me they feel patronising.

AIBU?

But they're not 'marketed'. They're just silly twee phrases that nobody uses in actual day to day speech. It's just some crappy internet meme from a few years back.

See also: ‘high maintenance things I do to be low maintenance’, ‘the morning shed’, ‘I’m just a girl’. It makes me want to rip my own eyeballs out

Girl maths is if I buy something and it’s £8 delivery, so I spend more to cover the delivery cost. So even though I’ve spent more I’ve got free delivery.

Girl maths isn’t a new thing.

RaraRachael · 27/12/2025 15:34

Never heard of either so I guess I'm not the target audience

HoppityBun · 27/12/2025 15:38

Unfortunately, many women do this. Often those on the far side of 40, who like to refer to themselves and their friends as “girls”.

Notmyreality · 27/12/2025 15:47

Agree OP.

I hate girl math in particular.
It definitely infantilises women and implies they’re too dumb to do “proper” maths (other than work out a tenuous good shopping deal)

It doesn’t imply woman are too dumb to do real maths 😂.

tryingtonot · 27/12/2025 14:08

That’s not girl math, it’s not about oh I have money left so let’s spend it.

OK yes I didn't put it well. It's more as others say – ways to justify the unneeded spend because "I saved £50 on the earbuds I bought which means the £50 bag is basically free".

VivX · 27/12/2025 18:51

"Girl Math" is patronising if directed at women in the workplace. Cringey if the woman herself is using it in the workplace.

I feel "Girl...[anything]" is not great but "Girl boss" is the worst one for me.

CandiedPrincess · 27/12/2025 18:55

Who cares? Honestly.

I had to google morning shed. How does anyone get any actual sleep?

That’s about as nuts as women getting themselves injected with shit for beauty purposes,

MrsKateColumbo · 27/12/2025 19:14

Yes I find it irritating as it implies frivolity, Girl Maths being Ada Lovelace etc is something I can get behind

SoftBalletShoes · 27/12/2025 19:35

What’s girl dinner??

BlackCatDiscoClub · 27/12/2025 19:41

I don't think they are supposed to be empowering, they're just supposed to be funny. I called it girl math when I gifted a friend a spare theatre ticket and refused money for it because it was bought in the last financial year and so doesn't count anymore. It's just being silly.

‘Something you can't really see a man putting together and then sitting down to eat.’

rubbish. Some people of both sexes sometimes / usually eat random stuff

I agree. Some of the "meals" that my DS puts together now that he lives on his own are weird to say the least. Basically, he just throws all kinds of things on a plate. It's definitely not just a female thing.

Men do that too. It's not just a "girl" thing.

But they don't call it "boy math" or "boy dinner"

WarmGreyHare · 27/12/2025 20:43

Totally agree.
