To think “girl math” and “girl dinner” infantilise women?

They’re marketed as empowering but to me they feel patronising.

AIBU?

A girl dinner is when it's just you, so you don't cook heavy food, you just have a plate of random bits and pieces and/or leftovers, like a slice of quiche, a couple of crackers, some fruit and crisps etc.
Something you can't really see a man putting together and then sitting down to eat.

Girl math(s) is when you twist things in a cheeky way to justify spending. Something like "paid in cash so it's free" or "treats don't count at Christmas" or "I bought it in the sale, so really it's an investment".

Edited

Horrible. I wish I hadn’t asked 🤣

YANBU

I bought some socks the other day, with Land Rovers on them. The label said "Boys Toys" as if girls can't be into Land Rovers. I had a rant to DH about how sexist it was, he didn't get what my problem was. As in "So what, you bought the socks anyway".

Urgh!

That's like when you want to buy school shoes for your daughter, and you complain that they are all T-bar style instead of closed shoes that actually keep their feet dry, and some smug, thinks-they're-so-clever asshole pipes up with "you know you can just buy shoes from the boys' section, you're welcome".

Completely missing the point but thinking they're so much better than us 🙄

Snorlaxo · 27/12/2025 14:17

Girl math is wanting to order something worth £40 from a site where it’s £50 for free delivery so ordering an extra item worth £10 and returning it al you get what you want for £40 free delivery.
Some would say that girl math is wanting to buy a £200 handbag that you’ll use 4 times a week. Over a year (52x4 days) the cost per wear is less than a quid which is hardly anything so you should buy it. It’s just a bit of fun and not meant as women can’t do maths.

Girl dinner is a meal that a boy would say is not a “proper dinner.” It’s usually snacky (I know how many hate picky bits)

Use or girl and boy can be infantilising but expressions like “boys night out” ,“girls trip” and “boy band” are in common use.

justpassmethemouse · 27/12/2025 14:23

Girl dinner is distinctly different from Woman Meals™

It’s just a silly joke, it’s not that deep 🤭

Why is a boy/man look acceptable but not girl math? And I’m not asking about math over maths.

cariadlet · 27/12/2025 14:23

I'm now enlightened but half wish that I hadn't asked. I was better off not knowing.
It seems that they're twee, infantilising phrases for twee, infantilising concepts.

Candleabra · 27/12/2025 14:24

I hate girl math in particular.
It definitely infantilises women and implies they’re too dumb to do “proper” maths (other than work out a tenuous good shopping deal)

itsthetea · 27/12/2025 14:26

Girl math - so men don’t twist things to spend the cash? And if you do you are not a grown person?

and who said men don’t just eat what’s around ? The type of man who expects a meat and two veg dibber every night ?

it’s infantile but because we don’t have the same phrase for men it implies only stupid women who don’t really matter do these things

I accepted around the age of 12 that many women and girls were as bad as the men when it came to sexism

BunnyLake · 27/12/2025 14:39

I’ve never heard of either expression.

Tryagain26 · 27/12/2025 14:42

What on earth is girl math ? It doesn't make any sense to me.
I don't even know what girl maths would be but at least that makes a bit of sense

We do have phrases like this for things men do though

"Man flu"
"man look"
"man cave"
even "man food" like steak or pie or something

It's just tongue-in-cheek, it's not meant to be taken that seriously.

It's not saying women don't/can't do maths though. Actual maths is an entirely different subject to "girl maths". It refers to a type of "maths" (really, it's "reasoning" not maths) that mostly women do. It doesn't exclude them from any other type of maths.

Dontcallmescarface · 27/12/2025 14:46

I find it rather pathetic if I'm honest.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 27/12/2025 13:59

I lost it at a colleague, paid £135K a year who giggled and announced "I'm just a girl" when she made a basic but serious accounting error.
Absolute fucking disgrace.

Almost as disgraceful as "losing it" at a colleague, which is also extremely unprofessional. Maybe she was trying to cover a really difficult moment with humour and was actually quite anxious about her "serious error".

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 27/12/2025 14:52

A bit, but I have a maths degree and a very successful job in finance - but very much identify with the ‘girl math’ logic of “if I pay cash it’s free” because my budgeting is based on what’s in my bank, or if I return something and spend the money it’s free because that money was already spent from my budget.

I haven’t seen girl dinner, but it sounds like exactly what I do when DH isn’t around to cook tea, and I do what I call foraging in the kitchen for food.

I’m independent, clever, capable and confident, so I don’t feel infantalised by making jokes like this, and identify with them, but I am mildly concerned they perpetuate an image of women as lesser and uneducated and incapable.

RudolphTheReindeer · 27/12/2025 14:52

It's a step back in feminism that's for sure

RudolphTheReindeer · 27/12/2025 14:56

I don't agree with the definition of girl maths stated on here but I'm not sure how to explain it.

It's like the 'I'm just a girl' trend, where a girl can't hammer a nail into a wall so says 'but I'm just a girl'. Tedious.

AtomicBlondeRose · 27/12/2025 13:58

It’s just a bit of fun. My DD and I enjoy these types of memes but we’re actually both good at maths and also enjoy cooking! We just enjoy the shared camaraderie of being home alone together and saying “girl dinner!” and having our snacks in front the TV. Could we do it any other time? Sure, but it makes it into a fun occasion rather than just feeling like we CBA to cook.

You and your DD enjoy being stereo typed as stupid little girls?
How sad and depressing.

justpassmethemouse · 27/12/2025 15:02

Girl math is nothing to do with being bad at maths!

It’s a way of fudging your numbers to able to buy extra things. E.g. you went out to buy a jumper and when you got there it was discounted from £20 to £16, so you are now able to buy a latte on the way home, as it’s basically free because you were expecting to spend £20 on the jumper.

Wanderinggoose · 27/12/2025 15:05

I don't understand the girl dinner because when DH is away I buy all the top notch stuff like nice steak, seafood, pork stuff like noce chorizo etc because it's cheaper for one than for two😂
So I actually cook more elaborate when alone😂
I can have snacks any time.

Beezz · 27/12/2025 15:08

The only people I’ve hear use these terms are other women. Most of them are annoying and infantilise themselves anyway.

HeyThereDelila · 27/12/2025 15:13

YANBU. I can’t abide all these memes and social media trends. I just ignore them and refuse to use the terminology.

ChristmasMantleStatue · 27/12/2025 15:15

100%. I follow a youtuber who I really like and have followed her in one form or another since she first started her blog more than 20 years ago.

She talks about having a 'girl's lunch' with her teen girls. It's generally a salad bowl. I like her, but i cringe hard when she says it.

I hate all those "man ....." sayings too! It's all infantilisation due to tik tak and other brainless social media.

I'd probably kill DH if he called his shed his "man cave" and he knows it!!

Ditto. It's all dumbing down at it's worst.

‘Something you can't really see a man putting together and then sitting down to eat.’

rubbish. Some people of both sexes sometimes / usually eat random stuff
