Shall we solve each other’s simple problems?

Merryoldgoat · 26/12/2025 17:46

So. I have a whole load of shit I’m dealing with that cannot be easily solved.

However I also have a variety of very straight forward issues that I could do with people helping with - so how about we all solve each other’s simple stuff??

Things I need help with and would appreciate answers from people who know:

  1. How many towels do I need for a family of four?
  2. What is the best way to keep Tupperware properly organised?
  3. What shoes do I need to be smart in all weather?

TIA?

To Randos, Greenwich is so lovely even at this time of year when the weather is not great. There are some very reasonable priced noodle restaurants that my kids love. Plus a Greggs for a sausage roll and hot choc to warm you up if needed!

My own small problem is I have recently started walking a lot! Lost some weight but my feet are suffering. Very dry skin which has become hard skin in places. What lotion is best and can I ever soften the hard skin up or need to have it removed with a pumice stone? I need a full foot regime to keep them in peak condition!

Mine is:

Where the hell can I find decent quality but affordable seamless knickers that also lift the backside

Merryoldgoat · 26/12/2025 22:24

@Zebracat I love sage green in a bedroom - it’s very restful. Could you maybe try extending your palette a bit with some pinks/greys?

If you want to keep bed linen, extending the colours in curtains and wallpaper etc might give you a bit more of a change with minimal effort.

  1. Should I buy a full length riding rain coat for wet weather when its only 10 odd weeks of the year?
Yes. I don’t ride but I do walk a dog and my Baleno riding mac brings such joy. I use the funny lap cover to sit on wet benches. Sometimes I consider taking up riding just so I can get some knee boots to go with it. Also global warming, it’s getting wetter all the time. Your horse will thank you.

Two bare feet im sure do an equestrian coat and they're inexpensive. I've got one of their dry robes for open water swimming and it's been brilliant. These are £100 but for dog walking the dry robes are about £60 and proper waterproof and warm. Size down if not using as a changing robe

@Cloudninelau

The feet stuff: get Footner cream but also those plastic socks you use for exfoliating are amazing. Your feet look gribly for a while as the skink peels off but they make a difference with regular use.

Clothes pegs: these are ridiculously expensive but really good. They last until you lose them, don’t budge off the line during heavy breezes, and keep sheets with elasticated corners spread out.

Goinggreymammy · 26/12/2025 22:29

My problem: how can I get a mix of roasting tins, trays, large le creuset roasting dishes, lasagne dish, smaller oven dishes etc to stay organised in a large deep drawer? I dont want them stacked on top one another because its a paintoget one from the bottom. But they slide sideways when I stand them on edge! Aargh.

Also, tea towels. They wnd up thrown in another deep drawer. Wasteful of space.

Missymarple · 26/12/2025 22:29

Re the feet issue, I can heartily recommend Weleda skin food. I'm diabetic so have yearly foot checks, the nurse is always going on about how soft my feet are and it's all down to Weleda.

@Merryoldgoat Cosmetic storage with a shelf: as a variation on the plastic boxes and IKEA towers I have these metal storage trolleys from Hobbycraft. They come in several colours and have accessories you can buy like lids, trays and bins.

As the trolley is on wheels you can tidy it out of the way when your DH is working in your bedroom and move it into the light when he’s not.

Ikea ones may have the same range of accessories, I don’t know.

ttcat37 · 26/12/2025 22:46

I have 2 baskets for Tupperware, one for lids, one for the bases. They stack much better this way and it keeps the lids easy to get to. You have to do a cleanse first before implementing ‘the system’ and throw away any solitary parts.

Okiedokie123 · 26/12/2025 22:56

@Vvvvvvvvv those boots look gorgeous. I wonder if they’d suit my wider feet though . I usually find regular width shoes are too narrow. Hmmm

I have one of these on a shelf, I’m guessing it would also work in a drawer if it was deep enough? Finding a big enough tall enough shelf was a challenge but SO worth it! Mine lives on “garage” shelving that I have in the cupboard space under my stairs. It’s brilliant. Solves the endless falling over problem!

@Goinggreymammy
Use a dish drying stand? Instead of separating plates it should separate your trays whilst standing them on their sides

Also who asked about white clothes and stains, the only thing I've ever known to work on white clothes is ACE the original one. There is also the Vanish Stain Bar but I haven't personally figured out how - I just know someone who has.

How can I get my cat to take his drugs every evening? He used to lap them up mixed with a lik-e-lix with no problem. Now he looks at me as if I am going to kill him, does scrapy scrapy round the bowl and walks off. He has a crushed Amodip tablet and Laxatract so a pill pocket won’t help.

Flexitol 25% urea foot balm is miraculous for dry feet.

My 11yo daughter (Y6) has produced a Pinterest board for her bedroom which is all red, black gothic, dark, lots of velvet and fabrics. Feels too grown-up for her. But maybe I'm just out of touch (she's a developing goth, I never have been). Decorating starts tomorrow. I've agreed on red walls.

Q: How much goth us too much goth when you're still in primary school? 🤔

Edited

God, no to red walls, it’ll be an absolute pain to redecorate. Plus it’ll look like a blood bath.
I’d keep it to Wednesday level of goth if you really have to 😂

  1. Two bath sheets, two smaller towels for each female family members/males who care about their hair, two hand towels for each bathroom.
  1. Chuck anything you have already and buy a new set that completely matches. Store in its own drawer/cupboard.
  1. Black leather Chelsea boots.

My own small problem:

  • I have a selection of old, non-matching sofa cushions. Should I continue to let them annoy me on a daily basis, or replace them? If replace, what colour cushions for a pair of light grey sofas?

Tone on tone, so same grey or a darker shade. Then a middle accent one in a colour that picks up on something else in the room.

LiftAndLetLift · 26/12/2025 18:48

x2 towels per person (one to use, one in the wash) plus hand/hair towels

Stacked. Key is to have multiples of the same one. Lids are a law onto themselves.

Black timberland boots

My problems

  1. Choose a specialist endometriosis surgeon
  1. Should I paint new skirting boards before or after DH fits them

Before, then touch up if needed.
Means no faffing with masking tape.

My problem is my dishwasher no longer closes properly because my child fell on the open door. Is it worth try to replace the hinges?

Tighten the hinges on the door.

Highly recommend a chiropodist for the hard skin, everything else is a waste of time!

I use clothes pegs for sealing biscuits, freezer bags etc

Giggorata · 27/12/2025 02:41

I stand all my baking trays etc on their sides in an old metal office files stand, basically like a dish drainer in design but with wider sections and more robust.

Agree about wooden clothes pegs, plastic ones just disintegrate after a while.

Is there an easy (lazy) way of cleaning up bronze cutlery, to restore the golden lustre?

Thirdtimeunlucky2025 · 27/12/2025 02:51

Tea towels

if you have the U shape under the sink deep drawer I fold tea towels longways in three and roll and stuff vertically in the front to back section.

if you don’t have that you could do the same but have a box to put them in in part of a deep drawer.
