Shall we solve each other’s simple problems?

Merryoldgoat · 26/12/2025 17:46

So. I have a whole load of shit I’m dealing with that cannot be easily solved.

However I also have a variety of very straight forward issues that I could do with people helping with - so how about we all solve each other’s simple stuff??

Things I need help with and would appreciate answers from people who know:

  1. How many towels do I need for a family of four?
  2. What is the best way to keep Tupperware properly organised?
  3. What shoes do I need to be smart in all weather?

TIA?

I don't use towels I just us hooded dry robe type things and hand towels for washing hands. Two each person.

The only towels are for the leaking roof and washing machine disasters and dog towels.

Chinsupmeloves · 26/12/2025 19:24

2 towels each and extra for hand and guests.

Hopeless with tupperware stuff, all crammed in a cupboard!

I have too many shoes but tend to wear one pair of smart patent leather ones for work and my pavers boots daily. Going out, depends how much I have to walk so either some comfy sparkly boots or heels. Xx

@NotDarkGothicMama

I would get new cushions. What colour palette is your room?

Grey is surprisingly versatile. Pinks,
yellows, greens, blues can all work with grey.

The room is currently cream and yellow but need replastering so I can go with whatever colour I fancy really. I like the idea of teal, navy and pink.

villanova · 26/12/2025 19:39

@oustedbymymate for deo stains I've recently had success with Dr Beckmann's Deo & Sweat stain remover (couple of quid from Amazon for a pump spray), as recommended on MN. Has worked on school shirts & martial arts uniforms. Took many applications/ washes, but they're now back to completely white.

Has my bus from Detroit to Toronto been cancelled or not?

Customer service are giving different answers to different people.

Welcome to Toronto, American friend!
(Or, welcome home, fellow Canadian!)
Hope your trip was good

Our tupperware is stacked in 2 boxes (depending on size) in a kitchen cupboard. Their lids are in their respective boxes but not on. I can yank the box out to find the container im looking for.
Any where the lids go awol or break are ruthlessly culled.

Id like to say I instigated this system - but it was DH after I swore at the plastics bastards for the n th time. And its been working like a dream for years now.

Edited

I shall henceforth refer to tupperware only as "plastic bastards"

LiftAndLetLift · 26/12/2025 18:48

x2 towels per person (one to use, one in the wash) plus hand/hair towels

Stacked. Key is to have multiples of the same one. Lids are a law onto themselves.

Black timberland boots

My problems

  1. Choose a specialist endometriosis surgeon
  1. Should I paint new skirting boards before or after DH fits them

Prime skirting boards with 1 coat before fitting. After fitting and gap filling, paint 2nd coat of primer, then paint.

Geneticsbunny · 26/12/2025 19:53

IKEA sells tuppaware with the lids and bottoms separately so that if you lose all the lids you can buy more and vice versa. They also sell glass over proof dishes which work with the same lids.

Re: How many towels do I need for a family of four?

I would say at least six bath sheet sized towels, four smaller bath sized towels, two smaller than that hand towels.
(I never use hand towels, but I put them out when guests come)

Re: What is the best way to keep Tupperware properly organised?

I have matching lid tupperwares in which different capacity Tupperware all match the same size lid and it's great. I keep all my lids stacked, and all my Tupperware containers stacked, by size, small all-in-one place medium all in one place large all in one place but the lids near all of them.
And for my older Tupperware that does not have that same capability of sharing the same lids, I stack all of the bowls inside each other from biggest to smallest so they nestle nicely, and do the same thing with the lids. It's a little bit trickier to find the proper lid and the proper bowl quickly but once you get used to your Tupperware, you usually know what you're looking for. I don't use the larger round Tupperware as often as I do the set with the interchangeable lids and containers.

Re: What shoes do I need to be smart in all weather? I don't know, I am more about function than fashion, And I fear that I probably never look all that smart...sorry.

Re: I have a selection of old, non-matching sofa cushions. Should I continue to let them annoy me on a daily basis, or replace them? If replace, what colour cushions for a pair of light grey sofas?

I would say get new ones that make you happy. Hard to say exactly what color without seeing the rest of your living room but as for myself with a light grey sofa, I would think perhaps either a really beautiful springleaf green, or a Caribbean water vibrant turquoise blue

Re: Has my bus from Detroit to Toronto been cancelled or not? I don't know but I sure hope that you got to Toronto safe and sound. At least the weather is good for the most part.

Re: the new hob...
Sorry, I can't help you with that when I've never had an induction stove before

Re: swimming...
Nope. Definitely stay comfy and warm. Pushing yourself to go out when it's cold dark and miserable can wait until New years when you've got your new years resolution firmly in place

Re: dinner tonight?
Can't go wrong with a nice hearty thick warm soup and fresh bread. But if you don't have that, crackers and cheese, perhaps a dip, a little bit of fruit a little bit of vegetable, wine... Basically a nice little snacking platter. That's my favorite type of supper.

TheChosenTwo · 26/12/2025 18:36

I have about 30,000 towels in my cupboard but I’d say for a family of 4 you need 8 bath towels and 8 smaller ones.
Tupperware is stored in our cupboard with the lids already on so you can just pick one out knowing it has a lid already.
The shoe question is too broad!

my minor question I can’t answer is what am I going to eat tonight? There are leftovers that I’ve been picking on all day and I’m hungry and can’t decide what I want to eat 😭

Any turkey left ? Pasta ,tomatoes ,mayo easy.

BabySocksNeverStayOn · 26/12/2025 20:00

How many towels do I need for a family of four?

One in use, one in wash, per person

What is the best way to keep Tupperware properly organised?

Store with lids on

What shoes do I need to be smart in all weather?

Dr Martens

Re: the deodorant that left weird stains in all of your T-shirts.
Wow that's awful, sorry, I'm not very good with laundry stains. Can't help you with that. Unless of course you just wore those t-shirts underneath a another shirt like an button up front that you can leave unbuttoned?

Re: emerging goth daughter.
I don't know how much goth is too much goth for an 11-year-old, but that sounds like an interesting color choice, a little bit like a vampire coven. Probably intentional. And 11-year-old is nearly a 12-year-old and that's nearly a teenager, I'm sure she'll be making all kinds of interesting aesthetic choices in the coming years. Better her room decor then her hair, right? You sound like a good mom to give her the option of decorating her room

Re: the endometriosis surgeon...
Sorry I don't have a recommendation for you but as someone who also suffers from endometriosis, I do hope that you have a surge in that can provide you with relief soon.

Re: painting the skirting boards
If you have the time and the place to paint the boards now before your husband installs them, that's a lot easier. You might have to do a little bit of touch up once they're on the walls, but for the most part it is a lot easier to paint them now rather than when they're already attached to the wall because then you're going to have to mask off the edges, make sure it doesn't drip onto the floor, And you'd have to sit on the floor to paint them, etc

Re: dinner choices
I would go with the hearty soup and bread!
Yum! But both sound good

Merryoldgoat · 26/12/2025 20:19

Ok. Next question.

What should I use in lieu of a dressing table in my bedroom? I’m limited space-wise as DH works in there but I have a lot of beauty products that create clutter.

How to keep all my stuff but also maintain a facade of organisation?

@Merryoldgoat for (2) I would recommend a big drawer or box so that you can store the boxes with their lids on as for me the big issue is lids and boxes getting separated

I hate storing Tupperware with their lids fully on - makes them smell

Not a problem I have ever had but I am sure there are many ways of storing Tupperware without keeping the lids on!

Brickiscool · 26/12/2025 20:25

The tupperware. Who knows. You can tidy it, but three minutes later the cupboard will turn back into a landslide that falls out when you open the door.

How can I get mud stains out of white jeans. I've already washed them 93 times. They are paler but not gone

Daijoubudesu · 26/12/2025 20:35

Tupperware has to live in a drawer. Big, medium and small rectangles/squares stored inside each other. Lids off. All the same brand. I buy Sistema.

Still in Detroit.
Our bus was cancelled but we got a seat on the next one which has just arrived.

AWintersDayInADeepAndDarkDecember · 26/12/2025 20:38

Tupperware: whatever you choose, choose only two or three sizes and buy multiples in the same size. This means the lids will always fit, and you can quickly match lid to base. The same size ones must also nest neatly inside each other, which sometimes isn’t easy to discover before you buy them.

I used to have at least 10 Carte D’Or 1 litre empty ice cream tubs, which were brilliant, but they’ve changed to paper packaging now. Once I saw a thread online where lots of people posted pictures of their collections, so it’s not just me. Excellent recycling.

White jeans: hang them outside on every sunny day until the stains have gone.

Oldandgreyer · 26/12/2025 20:40

We have 6 shelves of towels. With enough for us and visitors and enough spare in care the washer breaks for a month.

Tupperware.. I have a metal industrial style deep tray (it makes a massive lasagna) full of the kids and the boxes get stacked. All in one drawer.

daisychain01 · 26/12/2025 20:47

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 26/12/2025 18:21

It’s better to store Tupperware with the lids off to prevent tiny bits of moisture getting trapped, which can lead to mould collecting in the grooves.

Edited

I agree, Tupperware really smells if you store them with lids on.

we bought two deep storage baskets in Tesco and store the large ones in one and smaller in another. We keep them tidy ongoing, with the right lids in the right baskets, rather than allowing them to get jumbled up,

No - I have my chests of drawers inside the wardrobes so no surfaces.

Tupperware: collapsible silicon tupperware by Livarno (Lidl brand) is great. They store flat and the steam-plug on the lid matches the base. I've only ever seen them once in Lidl and snapped up a few. If I could I would replace all my tupperware with these as they're dead easy to store and match.

Needlenardlenoo · 26/12/2025 20:53

Depends where you are but I've had several endometriosis procedures with Dr Leila Hanna and had good experiences and outcomes.
