Shall we solve each other’s simple problems?

Merryoldgoat · 26/12/2025 17:46

So. I have a whole load of shit I’m dealing with that cannot be easily solved.

However I also have a variety of very straight forward issues that I could do with people helping with - so how about we all solve each other’s simple stuff??

Things I need help with and would appreciate answers from people who know:

  1. How many towels do I need for a family of four?
  2. What is the best way to keep Tupperware properly organised?
  3. What shoes do I need to be smart in all weather?

TIA?

I use clothes pegs for sealing biscuits, freezer bags etc

Hrft but me too, we have pegs everywhere .
Dc even plays games wuth them.

Best ones so far have been cheap white range in the Range. We tried wooden ones but they broke and wood split easily. Maybe depends where you get them.

My problem is, where the bloody hell is my DD's coat??!!

She went to a Holiday club on 23rd while I worked. Dsis picked her up from Holiday club at 1pm. MIL picked her up from Dsis's house at about 5pm and she stayed the night. DH picked her up from MIL's on Christmas eve morning and neither of us remember if she came back wearing her coat. Did not go out again on Christmas eve
Could not find coat on Christmas day. Coat not seen since.
MIL, sis and Holiday club are all denying the presence of a coat.
If you were this coat, where would you hide?
It is essential DD has a coat for the school runs next week, which we walk. I really don't want to have to buy a new coat 😭

Usually on my DHs car when we can't find something as hes obsessed with putting stuff in the boot out of sight for safety.

I applaud his intention but its a pain bc he can't always get to the boot to remove it.

Can anyone tell me why the skin on my thumbs are shedding randomly? No other fingers or body part. I have changed soap/shampoo/washing powder/handcream. Wash tote bags, avoid hand sanitiser as much as I can. Sorry I am just annoyed that I normally log into my phone with my thumb print and it has rejected it all evening.

Turned out i was the 1 in 100,000 that's allergic to our work anti bac wipes (green clinell) . My thumbs were affected bc that's how I pulled put the wipes

Found out in covid so I'm a gloved wiper now.

Would I learn to like pasta if I made my own?

@PandorasSockBox

If you don't like it due to its fundamental taste or texture, making it yourself might not be enough to change your mind.

But if you've previously eaten overcooked, or uninspiring pasta dishes, a homemade version could make a difference 🍝 😊

PandorasSockBox · 05/01/2026 06:42

@Alicorn1707
I think it may be a combination of texture and poor cooking, so I have nothing to lose by giving it a go myself. I am sure I can drum up enough people to appreciate my own pasta, even if I do not!

  1. Is it normal to have to clean my dishwasher filter twice a week? For some reason this task really winds me up.
  1. A tiny patch of dry skin at top of forehead, which has been there for ages. Less than a centimetre, really just a single flake. I've tried anti fungal cream, a cream containing urea, face oil, glycolic acid, nothing has made any difference. It's not itchy or sore at all, and the rest of my face isn't particularly dry. What to try next?
Edited

Not read the full thread but DH was recommended Aveeno by a GP when he had a dry patch on his leg.

@TheFluffyTwo Hush Agnes Straight Leg Jeans fit me - I also have wide hips/small waist. They're reduced at the moment (the jeans not my hips ho ho). On the pictures they have the hems folded up but imo they look better unfolded.

@Cloudninelau a very thick layer of vaseline under socks at night, and eat plenty of good fats like omega 3, I swear this is the secret ingredient to avoid dry skin

I actually bought these and they're great - so comfortable and don't make me look or feel huge! Thank you so much!

Merryoldgoat · 18/01/2026 11:36

Just to say my storage mirror has arrived and I’ve ordered some new towels and bath mats to match my favourite ones so I’ll be thinning out the linen cupboard when they arrive.

Less simple problem - are there any plus-sized sewists here who can recommend a good basic pull on trouser pattern? Cut for a generous bottom!!

In our family we wear FBTs - our reference is to 'Fat Bottom Trousers' and the go to is joggers from Primark, which can actually look quite smartish if accessorised up. They are £5-£6 - maybe buy a pair of these, and use as a pattern without cutting them up? Then you have FBTs plus a free pattern....

(Useful additional info - DH hates the feeling of elastic riding up his legs, so I always remove the elastic at the bottom and hem them instead.)

I have another one .. we all (DH, DD and I) have this horrible cold/flu thing and none of us have much appetite or energy. What can we eat that is easy to prepare, cheap and nutritious? I had cornflakes for dinner! DH and I are veggie, Dd isn’t but not fussed about meat anyway.

I always think omlettes are good when you're ill. Or jacket potatoes are very low effort. Avocado on toast?

What I need help on are:

  1. bags for life. How best to store. Have tried all in one bag on the back of a door, one of those ikea storage bins. Just can’t seem to keep them tidy
  2. shoes! Despite having 3 dedicated storage units we always end up with 3 piles on front of the storage units.
  3. clean washing. Just mounds and mounds of it.

Clean washing...
I still have mounds of it but anything that can be hung straight up, do so. My adult son has loads of clothes so I got a huge laundry basket/bucket thing in his room and all his clean clothes go straight in there for him to iron and put away. Like I said I still have mounds of it but now and then spend a few hours trying to tackle it (and fail)

Nice soup either homemade or from the shops with fresh bread.

In a big pan...Tinned tomatoes, mixed herbs, stock cubes, potatoes or rice, frozen veg of any sort. Boil. Simmer 30 mins. Blend. Eat.

Paper - we are drowning in it! Bills and statements (paid but with personal details on), schoolwork, my youngest son's never-ending doodles - it ends up just getting gathered up and stuffed in shoeboxes - what do I do now? I don't know how to declutter it- what to keep and what to recycle????

If you have enough that it's a nuisance to sort you could arrange for a company to shred it for you. For example:

Try Muna and Broad or Cashmerette for plus-size sewing patterns.

Tip I got on Mumsnet a few years ago - take a photo of anything that you might need to be able to reference and store it in an appropriately named file in an app like motion. Then a) shred at work or b) buy a home shredder (our local pet rescue loves the output for bedding) or c) pay someone to come and shred it. More sentimental stuff- get one (or more depending on where you sit on the sentimental versus clutter scale) nice shoeboxish sized box for each family member to keep any paper based things . I like these ones https://www.tinyboxcompany.co.uk/colour-deep-magnetic-gift-boxes#153=1463 when it's full they have to weed out things

Cheesy mash and salad ?

Off the back of this thread I now have rails up in my utility for my dresses to hang on straight out of the wash. They were a fiver each in Ikea and really easy to put up too. Bloody love it, thank you @Merryoldgoat!!

Merryoldgoat · 26/01/2026 08:25

@EmbroideredGardener yay!

I have transformed my Tupperware game too plus have entered a new towel paradigm.

Cracking idea for a thread - should be a weekly ‘let’s solve each others simple
problems’ thread!

My problem - I need to lose weight and focus on my health but just can’t stick to anything for more than a few days!

how do you get motivated and more importantly STAY motivated to get healthy and fit?

Following as I'm in the same dilemma.
