Shall we solve each other’s simple problems?

So. I have a whole load of shit I’m dealing with that cannot be easily solved.

However I also have a variety of very straight forward issues that I could do with people helping with - so how about we all solve each other’s simple stuff??

Things I need help with and would appreciate answers from people who know:

  1. How many towels do I need for a family of four?
  2. What is the best way to keep Tupperware properly organised?
  3. What shoes do I need to be smart in all weather?

TIA?

Some of these ( excellent ) Tupperware solutions could really do with a diagram!😂

My own problem is how can I get oil paint off my fake fur coat? I sent it to the dry cleaners, it was in there for weeks and they finally sent it back not cleaned. Which probably means that you can't...

if you're brave, for your coat, you could try methylated spirit @Appalonia

Or vodka!

Always store tuppaware with their lids on. Saves all the faffing.

...but takes up lots of space because you can't stack.

I don't have any tupperware, but save and reuse plastic takeaway boxes.

My 11yo daughter (Y6) has produced a Pinterest board for her bedroom which is all red, black gothic, dark, lots of velvet and fabrics. Feels too grown-up for her. But maybe I'm just out of touch (she's a developing goth, I never have been). Decorating starts tomorrow. I've agreed on red walls.

Q: How much goth us too much goth when you're still in primary school? 🤔

Edited

Pretty much everything is phase at that age. Let her go through it and enjoy it. She needs to try things to find ger groove. She'll be looking back and laughing at her "goth phase" by the time she hits Y9. Good memories and good for development.

Are you using margarine or low fat spread? They have a much higher water content than actual butter which might be causing it to split.

God sorry so many invested in my cauliflower cheese failure! So I make a basic roux, butter flour and whisk in milk till thickened, usually add a bit of nutmeg and Dijon mustard then take it off the heat and whisk in cheese. Always real butter, spread doesn’t work.

@amberLimemy DD went through an EMO phase at about 14, (I loved it tbh) She was obsessed with My Chemical Romance. DH did a mural of Gerard Way on her wall. About 2 months later she ditched it for K-pop 🤣 so that was worth it!!

I heard it’s to do with getting hot too quickly (🤷‍♀️) so maybe your oven is too high?

ziggyrumble · 02/01/2026 22:03

Only keep one (or two on a stretch) type of Tupperware so that you can stack them with lids off and avoid faffing with finding matching lids.

xAwaywiththefairiesx · 03/01/2026 16:00

My problem is, where the bloody hell is my DD's coat??!!

She went to a Holiday club on 23rd while I worked. Dsis picked her up from Holiday club at 1pm. MIL picked her up from Dsis's house at about 5pm and she stayed the night. DH picked her up from MIL's on Christmas eve morning and neither of us remember if she came back wearing her coat. Did not go out again on Christmas eve
Could not find coat on Christmas day. Coat not seen since.
MIL, sis and Holiday club are all denying the presence of a coat.
If you were this coat, where would you hide?
It is essential DD has a coat for the school runs next week, which we walk. I really don't want to have to buy a new coat 😭

EmbroideredGardener · 03/01/2026 16:16

@Appalonia have you tried combing it out of the fur? It depends on the colours but I found it reduced the paint down to tiny flakes that then came off

To be fair, that's exactly how I do it. Is the cauliflower too wet maybe? Are you letting the cauliflower sit and steam in the colander when you drain it/after you've steamed it?

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 03/01/2026 20:50

Oops, sorry, misread the times!

😆 not at all, I’m very grateful for all the replies and advice! I don’t have any cauliflower atm but will try the roasting method next time and report back!

  1. How do you use a face flannel?
  2. Is it called a flannel or a facecloth, or a washing cloth?

Sorry, but I can't find any threads on MN discussing such sensitive issues! 😂

Needlenardlenoo · 04/01/2026 08:43

I can only speak for myself but I call it a flannel and I wash my body with it in the shower. I normally have a couple on the go.

Please note that this is a LIGHTHEARTED post. (God forbid we have creeping flannelisation).

Apologies, @Needlenardlenoo if you haven't seen the other thread. x (and I appreciate that your reply may also be lighthearted, but I panicked slightly when I saw it! 😆

I am obviously missing some context here. I took the question at face value (pun intended).

Same, but here's my answer anyway.
Ignore OP if I'm off the mark.

Face cloth is the smaller square ones to wash your face with. Works as an exfoliater.
Flannel is longer, so you can scrub your back with one end over your shoulder and the other above waist on opposite side.
Work better for the whole body, but I use my face cloth for everything.

randos · 04/01/2026 17:57

Can I ask what frying pan shall I get if wanting to stop using a Teflon one?
Not too expensive but hopefully will last well for a few years?

Merryoldgoat · 26/12/2025 20:19

Ok. Next question.

What should I use in lieu of a dressing table in my bedroom? I’m limited space-wise as DH works in there but I have a lot of beauty products that create clutter.

How to keep all my stuff but also maintain a facade of organisation?

A very narrow ladder style shelves. This is the only thing that fits in my bedroom for my toiletries. As long as you don't mind getting ready standing up.

I’m wondering if going to London tomorrow with dc (primary age), where shall we go? Free, cheerful and not too busy. We haven’t been to the Maritime museum but travelling from Herts to Greenwich feels a bit far… is it worth it on a cold, short day when you can’t have a nice walk about.
Shall we just go the South Bank and see what’s left of the Christmas markets and hope it’s not so busy?

Edited

I find the Maritime Museum oddly disappointing and I think your primary age DC will probably feel the same. There's really not that much to see in there.
I think you can't beat the Science Museum, even if they've been before.

There's an IT Arcade there for children at the moment.
Also, I'm sure I don't need to tell you this, but do take your own sandwiches and snacks as cafe prices have gone truly bonkers. Even if you treat yourself to a cafe for a hot drink, smuggle in your own eats & you'll save fortunes.
I was at Tate Britain today and a cup of tea and scone&butter cost £11.80.

'OW much?! Bloody hell! You'd pay not much more than £5 for that hereabouts.
