If your partner has a football season ticket…

Would they go on Boxing Day and leave you home alone all day?
Just wondering if I’m being unreasonable because football bores me rigid and I can’t imagine leaving my partner of 6 years alone on Boxing Day.

I don't think we can answer this as it clearly completely depends on the dynamics of your relationship, whether football is an ingrained and accepted part of your life, and what your family setup is like.

DP has been a season ticket holder since he was young. I'm not, but go regularly (different teams). He goes all the time and I am fine with this. So for us, Boxing Day matches are expected and regular.

However, we don't have kids and our families are also football fans, so it's a given that if either of our teams are at home on Boxing Day, he'll definitely be there, and I might be there with most members of my family, so plans are built around that.

Neither of us have gone today due to how the fixtures have landed. It has been nice to spend the day with him, but I'd have been equally as happy without him!

Well we’re not in a city and DS has just set off to work, at a pub. I’ll be joining him later to watch the match. Plenty of places are open if you have the right mindset.
You’re sounding more and more like a petulant teenager. Just find something to do.

There is nowhere open within 30 miles of me. I have been out, shops shut, pubs shut, gym shut, coffee shops shut.

I didn't invite my children’s in-laws to my home yesterday 🤷‍♀️
They live at the other side of the country. If I was invited anywhere today, I would be invited as a couple. I would rather be on my own in my own home, than a third wheel at my child’s in-laws.

But they’re family? Isn’t that what you want? family time?

My thoughts too, sounds like the Op just wants to be mad at her partner for going to the football.

Yep. It’s one of those threads where the OP has decided she’s right and everyone else is wrong

They will just argue black is white rather than acknowledge any other opinion.

locketrocket · 26/12/2025 17:15

So your traditions are more important than your partners?

Ever heard of compromise?

Clearly i have since I’m the one at home, my partner is out.

Maybe it’s a social class thing, I grew up with christmas being about family. Not sport.

Also this is so snobby.

Not with my children’s in-laws, that would be a bit strange.

Drive further

You're obviously in a foul mood and not taking anything on board, snap out of it and get on with your boxing day.

clary · 26/12/2025 17:26

Yes he does and yes he does. But tbf he had a season ticket before I knew him and has always gone to the football. He takes the DSs when they are available (not very often now as working/at uni) and I know they enjoy the day (even when they lost last-minute like today, which is a shame).

I don’t have an issue at all. I knew this was his passion when I married him. There are things that bug me about my husband but him going to the footy is not one of them. I bet this thread has loads of PPs saying how selfish he is but I think, if you love doing something, your partner should support you – not necessarily do it with you, but enable you to do it. Especially if you have done it for years before you met them.

It works both ways of course. I have hobbies that take me out for the evening or out for the day without any of the family. All good. FWIW I love Boxing Day relaxation with no one here to please but myself and DD.

um. No. It’s completely normal. It’s family after all. Same grandkids.

It’s rural ok? Miles and miles from anywhere, nowhere open, nothing to do unless you want to hike a Munro.

Yes and New Year’s Day match - partner and son both go and I love those days for me time during a heavy social period.
ensure I have a good book, nice picky food I like and a few self care bits (face masks etc)
often go for a walk - always find a coffee shop open to stop and watch the world go by for a bit. Lovely slow days in a hectic season

Why would that be strange? They’re your extended family. It’s not strange for extended families to see each other at Christmas.

ilovesooty · 26/12/2025 17:27

The fixture list was available well in advance. You could have attempted to make early arrangements with your children or other family members. You just prefer to resent your partner for using his season ticket rather than staying at home to entertain you.

I live very rural and pubs are open.
Earlier in the thread you were saying there was nothing open within a 20 mile radius. Now that’s 30.
Sounds like you just want to add to the narrative of how you’ve been abandoned on Boxing Day.

I’m also at home on my own but I’m not making a drama out of it.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/12/2025 17:31

Why didn't you go with him, make a day of it. Spend the 90 minutes he was at the match shopping or in a coffee shop have a meal on the way back

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:32

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 26/12/2025 17:27

Why would that be strange? They’re your extended family. It’s not strange for extended families to see each other at Christmas.

One of my adult children parents in law have 5 kids, if they invite each child’s partner and children, plus their partners parents, they would have a stupid number of people in their house. And I have more than one adult child and they each have in-laws.

I do love a classic “AIBU, yes you are, no I’m not” on MN.

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 17:28

Don't be ridiculous

Um. My mum and dad just went on a holiday with my exhusbands mum and dad. They made friends when they met, every Christmas…

Cuwins · 26/12/2025 17:33

Before my DD was born I had a football season ticket and if my team were home then Boxing Day football was an absolute must. I was always disappointed when they were playing away.
My partner didn’t care at all- sometimes he would go to his parents and sometimes chill at home with his Christmas presents.
Unfortunately I can’t afford the ST now and I have to say I have really missed it at this time of year.

locketrocket · 26/12/2025 17:34

locketrocket · 26/12/2025 17:17

@HomeAloneBoxingDayhave you actually explained how you feel to your partner?

Op, you’re not helping yourself here.

It’s ok to not like what your dp does, but you’ve asked if YABU and now seem to pissed off with the response.

I’ll ask again - does dp know how you feel?

Exactly. Surely this didn’t come as a surprise
