If your partner has a football season ticket…

Would they go on Boxing Day and leave you home alone all day?
Just wondering if I’m being unreasonable because football bores me rigid and I can’t imagine leaving my partner of 6 years alone on Boxing Day.

I never grew up with this either. But, husband of >20 years did. I knew this about him from early on in the relationship and it would be massively unreasonable to try and change him to fit me unless he wanted to. If him going to football on Boxing Day is a deal breaker, you know what you need to do.

Home team improved and he was interested in the game again.

Maybe it’s a social class thing, I grew up with christmas being about family. Not sport.

No need for that OP.

Most definitely not about class. It’s about traditions evolving and changing.

Would you change your opinion if I told you I used to go to our local BD hunt?

Why don't you go and do something to entertain yourself? If my dad wasn't 80 and didn't fancy standing in the cold for 80 minutes we'd be at the Arms Park watching the derby with the Dragons. As it is we're watching it at home. Rugby not football, but it's just as a much a tradition when it comes to Boxing Day matches. Football bores me rigid too, but wouldn't bother me if a partner wanted to go and watch a match today - blow the cobwebs away.

Everywhere is shut - shops, gym, pubs.

He would if we didn’t have alternative plans with family etc., but he’d never prioritise football over other plans. But I really wouldn’t mind if we had nothing else on, last time he did Boxing Day football I had a brilliant lazy day on the sofa with leftovers, wine and chocolate.

TwistedWonder · 26/12/2025 17:09

Well you’d hate my friends partner who flew out to Oz last week for the cricket and won’t be back home until 6th Jan

Miranda65 · 26/12/2025 17:07

It's fine not to like football, but why didn't you do something yourself? What are your hobbies? Or you could have gone for a walk, gone to the pub with a book, met a friend, gone shopping (not my idea of fun, but still...). Why are you dependent on your partner for entertainment?

Because according to op, everyone else in her life is busy, absolutely nothing is open and she has enough peace and quiet during the week due to wfh

None of that is her partner's fault but because of that, he should miss the football so they can sit in together.

yes we do, I mean I doing think 2 days without football is a big ask

There’s no football on Christmas Eve or Christmas day so you’ve had your two days already

MaitreKarlsson · 26/12/2025 17:10

Yes - gone and taken the DCs. Usually just takes DS 16 but now Dd more into it.
I don't really mind but it has been a bit solitary today as they left early.

They are dead or with their in-laws

Yes, you said they were with their in laws. If Boxing day as a family has been embedded in your upbringing, do none of them extend their company to other family members then?

I think you just torched any sympathy you might have been gathering.

Mogloveseggs · 26/12/2025 17:10

Yes Dh and Ds have gone. I’ve had a lovely day so far got everything done without people lounging about in my way, caught up with a friend and not had to cook for anyone!

Not if you live in the UK - plenty open today

Happyholidays78 · 26/12/2025 17:10

I'm not a football fan but my family are & Boxing Day is all about the football & has been for years. I just accept it & do my own thing.

No I grew up believing christmas and Boxing Day was for family, not sport of any kind, country pursuits or football.

I think when people are unable to enjoy time alone, it’s puts them in such a precarious position. No freedom to leave relationships that aren’t working, very worrying for if down the line you and your partner don’t die on the exact same day.

CountryMusicFan · 26/12/2025 17:11

Yes, my partner wouldn’t miss the match unless there was something more important, but he’s only gone for about 4 hours. He loves football and I have my own hobbies which are important to me. We’ll still spend lots of time together today, we’ll have a takeaway soon, then watch something together.

Not in the countryside, I’ve been out and everywhere within 20 miles is shut.

I've been into town this morning shopping and the gyms are very definitely open. Mine put up a post encouraging people to come in for some freebies.

Rural SW by the way.

Why haven’t your family invited you to the in-laws then?

I enjoy my own company.
I work from home, self employed.
I lived on my own happily for years.
I am happy to do my own thing 363 days per year.

When I said 'go and do', I didn't necessarily mean go outside, I meant go and... read a book, call/text/email a friend, watch something on TV, do whatever hobby you enjoy. Surely there are plenty of things to keep you occupied within your own home?! You shouldn't need other people around to entertain you.

I live in the countryside and all our local pubs are open. How unfortunate that every single one within a 20 mile radius of you is closed.

Not in the UK they’re not. I’ve been to the gym and popped to Argos today, definitely open!
