2 soap and glory gift sets. My skin is sensitive, so I can’t use anything like that.
Baylis and Harding hand set - same deal.
A candle - never use them.
Pink gin - don’t like and never drink it.

It’s always the same people, no thought put into it. I think they just grab random bits from the 3 for 2 at Boots. I’d never say anything, of course, but it’s the same stuff every year and it gets a bit disappointing as I always make an effort to buy gifts that people actually enjoy or will use. Honestly, I’d prefer if they just saved their money.

What has everyone else had?

3 for 2 sets from Boots and random cheap make up brush set. The giver means well and I’m not ungrateful but I’d so much rather they just save their money (or got me a voucher or even even the cash ha).

Can you say for next year that you would like a..shop voucher instead.? I do this for one of my relatives because the gifts were so random so now I get a Boots voucher.

I’m 42 - I know which products I like and which I don’t. DSis bought me a beautiful bath set of a brand I love and will very much enjoy using. DM and DDad got me a Baylis and Harding set which I won’t touch. Obviously I acted very grateful but I don’t believe anyone on the face of the planet actually likes B&H? I got a set for secret Santa too.

KimberleyClark · 26/12/2025 09:38

None of mine! All from DH - Elemis skincare, L’Occitane toiletries, books, and a lovely pair of Vera Wang tealight holders.

A random scarf in clashing shades of rust and blue acrylic. No label and it’s slightly creased so I suspect it comes from the 'stash of crap I can regift' which I suspect my SIL keeps for these occasions. I am a knitter and I knit my own scarves. SIL knows this. But all her presents are always terrible and totally thoughtless. She used to buy my late (housebound) mum M & S jumpers in the wrong size and hideous colours, but never ever include a gift receipt, so when I took them back after Christmas they’d be in the sale and worth about £2.50. Madness.

Soonenough · 26/12/2025 09:40

Shite gifts from Xmas markets , coasters etc, ugly candles which I know will not have been cheap . Will be getting rid of my old dressing gown and possibly PJs as got new ones that I didn't need. I said no gifts this year and didn't provide suggestions but was ignored and this is the result . Going to suggest Kris Kindle next year with suggestion lists so at least everyone will get a decent present .

Honestly I say it every year, they agree and then still the same generic gifts each time. It’s my elderly grandma bless her and she like us ‘to have something to open’. She’ll never change at this point. Her presents have become a bit of a family joke (sounds awful but in a loving way ha).

And how would that work on an anonymous forum?

I am pretty sure it has worked on here before. The same as when people sent a children’s toy to someone who’s child lost theirs and won’t sleep without it.

Yeah my mum is a bit like that tbf with my Dc who are in their 30s she likes for them to have something to open.

I've worked in charity shops and we keep gift sets for December. The week before Christmas lots come in from early gifts.
Bayliss and Harding is a British brand made to high standards. Far East kits would be more of a risk! Check the packs.

My family buy me chocolate which I don't eat (my easter egg is still in the fridge!)
In all fairness I work in beauty , have family jewellery and know many fashion industry people so get what i need clothes wise. I'm a nightmare to buy for.
I do re gift some of the wine my husband gets. Three of our household dont drink .

phoenixrosehere · 26/12/2025 10:00

A single wash puff (why??), little tube of Lidl hand cream that will do nothing for my dry skin (from the person I told I didn’t want any gifts last year and wouldn’t drop it , gave them an answer of helping me and their brother with something which would have taken an hour) and they suggests a hand cream at that answer 🙄), a bath pillow , and chocolates (posting on Olio) because I have also said repeatedly I’m not a chocolate person.

I have said in the past I don’t want any gifts from DH’s side and am ignored. I buy for the kids and was told by DH we weren’t doing gifts for his family (after I had already bought for niece) but that changed only a few weeks ago so no clue what happened. He sorts the adults which he didn’t buy for this year.

Thankfully, on my parents’ side, we don’t do gifts anymore, and keep it to just kids.

I have chocolates that i don't like, I can't even charity shop those,

If you have a local food bank / local giveaway page try and donate there.

Freda69 · 26/12/2025 10:03

Mulberry and vanilla body wash and body lotion from my best friend who loves all that stuff. I always use posh soap (less plastic and gentler on my skin) and can’t stand covering myself in gunk.
Same every year - she always buys stuff she would buy for herself!
I feel bad for moaning, but it’s now a joke between my husband and me.
Another friend gave us a RNLI teacloth - bit random?
Everything else was fab!

Screenager · 26/12/2025 10:04

HereForTheFreeLunch · 25/12/2025 23:17

Nothing. Am keeping the fluffy socks and the body wash too. I am very easy to please!!

Me too!… I’ll wash in anything and just stretch them put until easter

Supersimkin7 · 26/12/2025 10:07

Nothing! I love getting bath stuff and fluffy socks. Chocolate is a treat, and a truly fine rando of a gift is always entertaining.

SimplyBudgie · 26/12/2025 10:07

Nothing.

But the selection of bath and body giftsets I get from dh's siblings and a couple of elderly aunts keeps me in school raffle donations all year 😂

BabyLikesMsRachel · 26/12/2025 10:11

Actually I don't think anything from this year but we don't get many presents all. The children got a couple of duplicates though so those will be probs be regifted.

My Avon room scents Advent calendar from MIL that she says lots of people recommended it to her as a perfect Christmas gift. Can someone make it make sense to give an Advent calendar as a Christmas present?!

I get migraines from room scents/air fresheners etc, so I cannot use it, which she does know. I am also pretty sure it is from last year as it says packaged in 2024 on the back and that she probably got it as a tombola prize. It would not be the first time she has done this.

If it's one of those 12 door ones then it's meant for between Christmas and epiphany. No idea why they call it Advent as it's a 12 days of Christmas one!

Missing the point about the fragrance giving you a headache there ...

Gcn · 26/12/2025 11:42

One of these. It's a calendar, that you need to change manually every day (so need to know the date???) it's big and pointless and the latest shit gift from dsil. I think she thinks it's funny to get shit gifts, but what a waste of money...

Come on then, which gifts are going to the charity shop?
AuntieDolly · 26/12/2025 11:51

Most of them, but that’s where they came from! We buy £5 charity shop items for the adults and re-donate what we don’t want to keep

Sartre · 26/12/2025 11:52

MIL got us disgusting matching pyjamas with King and Queen on the shirt. We pissed ourselves laughing once she’d left. My Mum got us really random weird presents too, I’m not entirely sure what she was thinking with some. A salt lamp for example? I don’t know why anyone wants a lump of salt with a light in it.

There used to be a long running thread years ago on mn where people did that and passed on unwanted gifts or swapped with others. I think it stopped due to covid but I certainly remember this thread. Does anyone else remember it?

Yes, I remember it. As well as Covid, as the site grew larger, the thread started to attract scammers - people were sending off their gifts to swap, and getting nothing in return. I never participated as I only receive a few gifts from immediate family, but I enjoyed lurking on the thread.
