Come on then, which gifts are going to the charity shop?

2 soap and glory gift sets. My skin is sensitive, so I can’t use anything like that.
Baylis and Harding hand set - same deal.
A candle - never use them.
Pink gin - don’t like and never drink it.

It’s always the same people, no thought put into it. I think they just grab random bits from the 3 for 2 at Boots. I’d never say anything, of course, but it’s the same stuff every year and it gets a bit disappointing as I always make an effort to buy gifts that people actually enjoy or will use. Honestly, I’d prefer if they just saved their money.

What has everyone else had?

Foot scrub and foot cream

GarlicBreadStan · 26/12/2025 03:47

I'm very fortunate in the fact that absolutely nothing I received will be going to the charity shop. Everything I got is either what I asked for, or something that fits my personality

SpicyMargarita1 · 26/12/2025 04:09

There are people on MN who are on their own and got no presents. Maybe reach out to them and see if they want anything you have?

RaisinRainbow · 26/12/2025 04:54

Gutted that a F Hind box contained cat shape earrings rather than the plain gold or pearl studs I actually need and had been hinting for. What a waste of £55. Vinted here we come!! The giver gives USUALLY sticks to A gift script but these were an impulse buy - the exception proved the rule!! A 2 foot tall Balinese style wooden cat statue has already gone to the charity shop - I opened it early as it was obvious what it was. My home is vintage cottage core and it just doesn't suit. That giver is horrendously tone deaf around gifts, it's an annual cycle. He even joked about just buying from the rare book series which I would LOVE, then goes ahead with his own whims.

  1. Book I’ve already got/read.
  2. Bizarre perfume set unknown brand.
  3. Jewellery box (allegedly) - silver/pewter from Amazon. Weighs a ton and hideous/garish design.
  4. Necklace - never wear them.
  5. Swear mug.
  6. Loo roll!

3 Bayliss & Harding Gift Sets.

That’s rubbish. Nothing says generic and zero thought 💭 like B&H.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 26/12/2025 06:01

Nothing, but I only get presents from DH and my adult DC. We do lists and also know each other well, there are no Boots 3 for 2 gifts on sight.

It would be nice if DPs could be bothered to buy gifts they have the funds but not the desire to treat their DD or DGC.

In years gone by I’d have been first on the thread with my random gifts, fortunately we have managed to stop the annual exchange with the wider family and friends so I no longer have endless fluffy socks, cheap wine and Ferraro rocher or any random smellies.

Zanatdy · 26/12/2025 06:03

The watercolours painting set and colouring book. Don’t have an arty bone in my body!

TidyDancer · 26/12/2025 06:11

A sanctuary spa gift set. It’s from a colleague and I’m pretty sure she would’ve got it as the freebie in a Boots 3for2 offer. I don’t use the brand so it’ll gather dust and I don’t need more random stuff to do that in my house!

Lavender115 · 26/12/2025 06:16

I love books but got double-ups at Xmas for my DC.

A join the dots puzzle book in large print which I’m hoping was bought as a joke. Some animal band-aid that were definitely a joke. Chocolate covered coffee beans as I can’t eat them. Everything else was lovely.

I'd love the join the dots large print book! I enjoy doing them & prefer like large print ones 🙂

MerryChristmasFilthyAnimals · 26/12/2025 06:22

A pair of pliers (very useful the first time but this is the 5th year in a row I’ve received them)

Slippers size 4-7 - I was happy until I saw the size and my feet are children’s size 13.

Reusable kitchen roll. I love kitchen roll but the reusable stuff is a faff and you can’t put it back on a roll.

a cushion with a printed owl on that doesn’t suit my decor at all.

These were all from the same TEMU obsessed person.

Also 3 Bayliss & Harding gift sets from 3 separate people.
One of those was DP who confused it with my Molten Brown stuff and thought he’d grabbed a huge bargain - luckily he redeemed himself with other gifts!

Cando6 · 26/12/2025 06:23

Just a flavoured gin that will sit there until one of the DC wants a bottle to take to a party! Why do people think people who like the occasional G&T think those people want some sweet Rhubarb and Raspberries or whatever concoction?

And how would that work on an anonymous forum?

WhatDaHell · 26/12/2025 07:33

A huge body wash set (definitely from temu)
A pair of pjs that are 3 sizes too large from mil

hattie43 · 26/12/2025 07:35

I was gifted a ‘ wellbeing ‘ hamper . Read samples and pound shop stuff . Not to charity shop but straight to the bin .

paradisecircus · 26/12/2025 07:40

I've been given some nice stuff but am not averse to a bit of regifting (with full acknowledgement to the recipient that it IS a regift) if I think I won't use the thing but someone else will. Candles and diffusers would fall into this category for me.

Loo roll always useful! 😀

Super lucky that all my gifts are great and usable. Only one Bayliss & Harding gift set but I think the contents are OK so I'll use it.

Maryberrysbouffant · 26/12/2025 07:46

My mother in law gets us crap gifts every year, I think she gets them from the charity shop in the first place so they’ll be going back there.

To be clear, I’d be happy with charity shop gifts if they had any thought put into them, but she gets us random shit when we’d rather have a bottle of wine. Doubly annoying as she has plenty of money so it’s not a finance issue, just a can’t be arsed issue.

TheTowerAtMidnight · 26/12/2025 07:51

An ornament shaped like a bird and some fake flowers (from different people). I hate fake flowers!

menopausalmare · 26/12/2025 07:58

Most of our presents come from elderly relatives who no longer drive, don't shop online and can only walk to the local shops. Every year we get calendars, amaryllis, hats, mugs and lots of food items. Kind but a bit boring. I'll be donating a calendar as I already have one.

Needmorelego · 26/12/2025 08:09

@lemonsherberts6 I just don't understand why you wouldn't say anything.
Toiletries that affect your skin badly is a perfectly good reason to say you wouldn't want them.
Why on earth can't people just be honest with each other?

NerrSnerr · 26/12/2025 08:11

I always stock up on bubble bath and bath bombs in the charity shops after Christmas. I don’t think we have anything we don’t want this year. We’ll see my mum tomorrow which might be interesting as she has lots of memory and health problems (I’m mainly concerned that earlier in the week she said she had presents for one child and the other’s hasn’t arrived yet).

Would a charity shop appreciate a National Trust diary?

MIL gets me one every year, despite me mentioning how fab it is to have a diary on my phone at every opportunity. I have no use whatsoever for a paper diary.

Absolutely! I love a paper diary and no one got me one this year (and I do also use google calendar AND a work diary, but I like having the paper version in front of me each week to see it all laid out).
