That anyone installing cool light temperature LED bulbs should not be allowed to host Christmas

That’s it, I think if your house is lit by Arctic icebergs then you really have no business hosting.

YANBU in the slightest.

Taweofterror · 25/12/2025 18:28

What? Is this a genuine complaint? If it is, I think I've seen it all on Mumsnet now in terms of finding something to whine about

Doggymummar · 25/12/2025 18:28

We just bought a house that had these in, all replaced in under a day. You are correct

Mix56 · 25/12/2025 18:29

You are my alter ego
Blue light is just wrong. It should be illegal

LBOCS2 · 25/12/2025 18:31

100% true, it’s not festive, it would be like celebrating Christmas at the dentist.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 25/12/2025 18:32

Yes. It’s soooo cold and clinical!

throwaway20262025 · 25/12/2025 18:33

YANBU. Same goes for cool white Christmas tree lights.

EmeraldRoulette · 25/12/2025 18:38

I'm probably missing something
I think cold white light is my favourite kind of light - especially in winter

I've been at my mum's for a couple of days, she is elderly and had an astonishing stock of old-fashioned yellow light bulbs. It makes my head explode. Even when I go there for a couple of hours, I can't bear it.

but this is MN so you may be picturing big houses with intense levels of light that do resemble the dentist. Not the kind I get from daylight lamps in my flat.

NoSoupForU · 25/12/2025 18:40

I have the lamps all set to cool white but when we have company I switch them to a warmer hue as I appreciate I'm in the minority.

Cushionseams · 25/12/2025 18:41

I mistakenly added a white white light bulb in the bathroom, every time I walked past the mirror it was directed on I aged 20 years, awful. Swapped it round pretty quickly.

TheSweetestCon · 25/12/2025 18:50

YhaveneverbeenlessU

I suspect those that use cool white lights also keep the Big Light on generally. Shame on them.

FuzzyPuffling · 25/12/2025 18:53

My NDN has these in every room of the house, and no curtains or blinds. Ugly, but we're saving money on our electricity.

Actually, she's a doctor, and combined with the enormous kitchen island we suspect she's running some kind of out-of-hours mortuary.

Top marks, v thoughtful.

I have no preference on colour of light bulbs. I hate lamps though. Fiddly and annoying. Big light only for me

Hicupping · 25/12/2025 19:10

Potential health benefits to getting rid of the cool light too. "On subgroup analysis of cataract patients, patients with a history of cancer had a lower lifetime risk of venous thromboembolism after implantation with lenses that filter low-wavelength light."

Settingstory · 25/12/2025 19:27

DH installed cool bulbs in some new bright Big Lights in our living room and I threatened divorce unless he changed them to warm. I’ve never been so visually offended and tempted to cause some electrical harm to the light fitting

I live in a very small flat so visitors are rare but I've just realised, I do ask them.

I think most people realise that it's valuable in battling the dark grey outside.

I don't use the daylight lamp in the evening.

whenever I attempt household jobs, including not doing it myself and getting a professional in, I find it an expensive hassle that usually goes wrong. So I'd quite like to change the ceiling light but given my history it's easier to just have a daylight lamp!

I appreciate that lighting is really important to people, but if you've been invited to Christmas by someone with unsuitable lighting, for you, you should probably just decline

Or ask in advance what kind of lighting they have - and then they'll never invite you again anyway 😂

Guess what? My MIL says she can’t see without bright blue office-style lighting in her home…which triggers a seizure for me (I’m epileptic) after prolonged exposure…so I don’t go to her house after dark 😂. Have I completed your MN bingo?

I really like you. I become deeply discombobulated by changes to lights and would have made similar, if not worse threats in your place. ☠️

Erm, no? Being an epileptic triggered by lighting is completely different to having a personal preference over lighting and expecting others to conform to it in their own homes.

Cool white light people are pyschopaths.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 25/12/2025 19:59

I accidentally bought cool white bulbs for some uplighters, hideous!

I am liking this connection we have formed.

Coming home to your own house to find the person you thought you knew so well actually harboured a secret fancy for cool white lights AND wanted a brighter big light and tried to inflict them on you without prior warning was intensely alarming and caused me to disassociate

MrTwisterHasABlister · 25/12/2025 20:06

My mother died in September (bear with me) and I miss her desperately.

I put my dad’s tree up for him this year and when I realised I could leave her cool white (and BLUE 😲) tree lights in the box I pretty much sprinted to Argos for 400 warm white bulbs. Joy to the world indeed.
