To think that 17 degrees is not warm enough?

Staying with a family member who is refusing to agree that 17 degrees in a drafty living room is too cold!! I have a small child here with me and the said family member decided to sleep with the window open as they like the breeze. They also do not like to shut their bedroom doors so draft under our door into the ‘make shift’ bedroom all night. We are in England and it’s freezing at the moment. I am fuming and freezing but don’t want to ruin the day.

Sounds like my in laws, MIL doesnt seem to like putting the heating on...

Is there a hot water bottle you could use? (Not that you should have to)

sashh · 25/12/2025 12:16

My heating only goes as high as 17 when my dad visits.

Gamerlady · 25/12/2025 12:26

You'd hate my house its currently 17 degrees, its not cold at all. I hate hot stuffy houses, they make me feel ill.

But who needs a hat at 17 degrees? If it was 17 outside you wouldn't wear a hat or a heavy padded coat, so why would you need one indoors? That's what I don't understand. 17 is a light sweater for most of us, surely? I don't get the need for all the drama.

exactly

Oh do go and enjoy your Christmas instead of trying to be smart online.

I don't need to try to be smart, I'm perfectly able to discuss without meaningless absolutes. You enjoy your day too

Yes, I too find most houses and restaurants way too hot. Anything above 16 is uncomfortable for me. I am constantly opening windows.

Thanks for validation.

So those who say 17 is perfect presumably cannot stand warmer restaurants, friend’s houses etc?

Yes i would be uncomfortable, im nearly always too hot ! But i can understand everyone is different

vanillalattes · 25/12/2025 11:38

But it’s the same temperature- why is one uncomfortably cold and one a normal summers day?

Tbf 17 degrees is a pretty cold summer's day. Also 17 degrees feels different depending what time of year it is - 17 degrees in Spring feels warm, 17 degrees in Autumn feels much colder.

I really wouldn’t describe 17 as cold - I work outdoors year-round and 17 is pretty much shorts and t-shirt weather for me 😂

Perhaps they don't like really like guests, invited because felt they ought to, and hope you'll go home early.

Just ask to borrow warm clothes, hog the fireplace and wear a bobble hat indoors.

If your child is cold amd not just copying you moaning, go for a nice brisk walk, have a warm bath, snuggle under a blanket on the sofa with hot chocolate.

Visiting others means seeing how people live. Not expecting them to change to suit you. Bit like going on holiday someone different.

Having your house so cold that guests have to wear a hat indoors is incredibly rude! (Intentionally or otherwise)

vanillalattes · 25/12/2025 12:50

Creu · 25/12/2025 12:03

Ok… perhaps just leave it there then? You don’t get it and that’s absolutely fine. Have you home as cold as you like, this thread discussion won’t result in someone showing up to your house and increasing your thermostat against your will.

I never said it would, did I?

I’m not sure why you need to tell me to “leave it there then” either - I’m not a naughty teenager that you need to admonish 😂

gogomomo2 · 25/12/2025 12:52

17 is fine, it’s that here and I’m warm, we will light the fire after lunch then I’ll need to change into less clothes

Sid9nie · 25/12/2025 12:57

It's warm enough for me but not for in-laws so house is at 24 and I'm melting, but they're old and have been ill so I'll just have to strip off!

Twinkletoes127 · 25/12/2025 12:59

I would be miserable in all your houses. Ours is never under 21° through waking hours and at night around 18.
There is no way I would spend christmas so cold

ManyPigeons · 25/12/2025 13:00

17 is a completely normal temp for a house. My house is 11-13C and that is way too cold (we have a roof issue).

How can you afford that? Our gas is £140 a month and we only have the heating on for an hour a day.

boothandbones · 25/12/2025 13:00

I’m ok at that as my work is about 16c so I spend all day at low temps! But if a guest was cold, of course I would turn heating up etc
I am always conscious that I run hot (due to my heat allergy) and that other people are colder

to be fair I wear thermals at work

BlackCatFanClub · 25/12/2025 13:02

We have ours at 18, DH thinks it’s too cold, so boosted it to 18.5 for an hour. 17 would be too cold, it’s nippy outside today.
i used to put it up to 19 but then would start opening windows so I’ve taught myself not to do that. His parents would have theirs about 24 and I literally felt sick a lot of the time.

There is no way I would spend christmas so colours is about £180 a month including electric, but its only a small flat.
Its cheaper to keep it warm than cooling and heating

It really isn’t. I’d be miserable at that temperature.

Legomania · 25/12/2025 13:10

"How can anyone stand it above 16 degrees? Btw I am mid-menopause and/or have a thyroid issue" 🙄

TubeScreamer · 25/12/2025 13:13

I’d prefer 17 to 20+ which is stuffy and makes me feel really quite unwell.
However, I’d hate guests to feel cold and miserable in my house.

Have you asked if you can turn the heating up or shut windows? Maybe they don’t realise that you are cold.

Creu · 25/12/2025 13:17

It’s just so bizarre that people cannot seem to comprehend that people experience temperatures differently.

I'd be ill in your house. There's no way I could stand that temperature day and night without getting a migraine.
