To think that 17 degrees is not warm enough?

Staying with a family member who is refusing to agree that 17 degrees in a drafty living room is too cold!! I have a small child here with me and the said family member decided to sleep with the window open as they like the breeze. They also do not like to shut their bedroom doors so draft under our door into the ‘make shift’ bedroom all night. We are in England and it’s freezing at the moment. I am fuming and freezing but don’t want to ruin the day.

It is cold today - I opened the door to go to the bin earlier and it's 2 degrees here. I would say 18-20 is ideal on a day like this.

PlazaAthenee · 25/12/2025 08:17

Yanbu. That's not comfortable at all. Even with layers.

RedToothBrush · 25/12/2025 08:18

It's not warm but the fact you have a small child is completely irrelevant as it's warm enough. You are being somewhat melodramatic. Small children run warm and they are liable to be more comfortable than if it was 22C.

Grab a duvet or an extra jumper. You'll live.

Happynow · 25/12/2025 08:18

YANBU! Far too cold, I'd be miserable.

LiftAndLetLift · 25/12/2025 08:19

My house is set to 17 and it's perfect, for me & DH.

If we have guests over I set it to 20 as I know 17 may not be quite warm enough if you're not used to it or don't have a warm jumper on!

HansHolbein · 25/12/2025 08:19

Oh I would hate that.

GrannyTeapot · 25/12/2025 08:21

I haven’t put the fire on yet, the house is 16C and the children are just playing in their pyjamas, haven’t put their dressing gowns on or their slippers or asked to get dressed. We live in Scotland, maybe my children are just more used to cold mornings 😆.
Just layer up, maybe put a second vest on the kids. Also, use a towel as a door draught excluder, or a jumper. There really isn’t an issue, you don’t have to fume.

AhBiscuits · 25/12/2025 08:21

That sounds absolutely miserable. You'll have to add some extra layers. I'd be keeping my stay as short as possible.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 25/12/2025 08:21

You'd hate our house. We keep it at 17C although we do put it higher if we have guests. But it never gets above 19 even if the CH is running at full blast 24/7. It's an Edwardian house with huge single glazed sash windows and no cavity wall insulation.

We always try to make sure our guests are warm enough. We give extra blankets, hot water bottles etc.

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/12/2025 08:22

When I had DS 19 years ago the recommended room temperature for babies was 16-18 °c, but wearing one more layer than you would wear yourself.

HeddaGarbled · 25/12/2025 08:22

Different people like their houses at different temperatures and no one’s wrong.

I’d just tell them you’re cold every 10 minutes until they give in. They can moan about you after you’ve gone home.

mikado1 · 25/12/2025 08:23

I don't put the heat on until about 4pm or later and even then only for 2 hours. Only fire and no heating the last two days so definitely prefer a 'cool house' but if hosting is would put it on if guests uncomfortable. Hope they do the same for you if you are actively feeling the cold. Little one as pp said will be absolutely fine.

Maybebaby10 · 25/12/2025 08:23

So those who say 17 is perfect presumably cannot stand warmer restaurants, friend’s houses etc?

cadburyegg · 25/12/2025 08:25

YANBU

Anything below 21 degrees is too cold for me

Yes exactly!

Peonies12 · 25/12/2025 08:26

17 is fine overnight, it’s healthier to sleep in a cool room with warm clothes / bedding.

AuntyBulgaria · 25/12/2025 08:27

I sometimes wonder if our thermostat is out. I don't think I've ever seen our flat below 17 degrees and that was only over night on the coldest days. 19 degrees is not warm enough to sit about and 22 is about right.

Makemeanonymous · 25/12/2025 08:27

If you aren't warm enough you can wear layers to heat up.
But people in rooms at a temperature that is too warm for them don't really have options in anything they can do to make it tolerable.

Coffeeishot · 25/12/2025 08:27

Surely you can pop a blanket on or an extra jumper? My house is usually at 18 and I don't find it that cold, you know you don't have to visit the cold house and pretend you are having fun

Macaroni46 · 25/12/2025 08:28

How unwelcoming of them. Regardless of how they like their house temperature, guests’ needs should be considered. Are you obligated to stay?

LiftAndLetLift · 25/12/2025 08:28

Maybebaby10 · 25/12/2025 08:23

Yeah I find overly-heated restaurants, shops and other houses really uncomfortable, I either avoid, or if it's planned I put a light layer on so I can be cooler.

I think it stems from when I developed rosacea, heating sets it off, so I got used to cooler temperatures and now find anything higher than 17/18 too warm.

I love a cool bedroom at night to sleep in too.

GreyCloudsLooming · 25/12/2025 08:28

17 is completely fine but a host should adjust to the guests’ needs, as long as they can afford it.

YANBU! Far too cold, I'd be miserable.

My husband's family do 'competitive coldness, windows wide open at night bloody freezing misery' . We visit them between April and September ( and stay somewhere nearby rather than in their houses). Not a cat in hells chance I'd visit any of their homes between October and March .

Toothfairy89 · 25/12/2025 08:31

Do people really think 17 is that cold?

It's a jumper and socks temperature but not freezing or dangerous for a small child.

Yes I’m always too warm.
