To not tip the delivery person who is about to bring my Christmas food

Pavementworrier · 23/12/2025 13:56

I've only got a £20 in the flat

I hate that tipping is a thing in this country now it's such a minefield

(It's Waitrose)

I've never tipped a food delivery person.

HeadyLamarr · 23/12/2025 13:57

I don't tip grocery delivery people. When did that become a thing?

I8toys · 23/12/2025 13:58

I always tip the delivery drivers at Christmas and New Year. There was 2 they got a £10 each.

CBAwithallthethings · 23/12/2025 13:58

Nope I don’t tip food delivery. My Xmas delivery just came from Ocado and I didn’t tip

Lifestooshort71 · 23/12/2025 13:58

Most supermarkets say 'don't tip the delivery driver' so we never have (and they don't look as though they expect one).

yeesh · 23/12/2025 13:59

I never tip mine, I don’t think they can accept it anyway tbh.

Poppingby · 23/12/2025 14:01

I always buy an extra chocolate orange or similar and give it to the delivery person. I always assume they're not allowed to take cash tips.

I think Waitrose is silent on the matter

Edited

I'll choose to believe this too

I don't tip the Ocado delivery drivers - they've got a proper job and not part of the gig economy.

Perhaps if you had the same regular driver, along the lines of a postie or refuse collectors where tipping has been 'traditional' for a long time, then maybe I would.

There's a limit to how many people you can tip!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/12/2025 14:07

Eh?! Wouldn’t have even occurred to me to tip the person who delivers the food shop. I tip the driver for Just Eat, etc. because the app gives me the option. I won’t hand them actual cash though.

Fontet · 23/12/2025 14:08

Tip hairdressers, nail tech , refuse collection, delivery drivers etc etc. x

WalkingtheWire · 23/12/2025 14:09

Ive never even considered tipping a delivery driver. Also, Waitrose are a good employer I don’t think they would encourage tips, I mean you don’t tip the person on the checkout do you?

MrsLizzieDarcy · 23/12/2025 14:12

We've got a £500 Ocado food shop coming so I'll be slipping them a £20 for bringing it all in. Waitrose will accept tips, we've done so before and if they've been really helpful, I've emailed the local store. When a very kind delivery driver came back as my dog absconded on a walk (that was a horribly stressful morning) and I missed my shop, I emailed them and she said a few weeks later that she got a special mention in the staff meeting and a reward so I'm glad I did it. (I'd add that we've got 15 for Christmas Day and 12 for boxing day hence the massive delivery, it's not all booze!)

Fridgemanageress · 23/12/2025 14:13

I don’t think they expect tips at all. I gave the delivery driver a load of copper and told him it’s all I’ve got, thank you for the delivery.

he was genuinely pleased, said thank you, it will go towards petrol, I said I hope you have a little diesel that does 100mpg, cos there is only a thimbles worth there, he laughed, thanked me and brought the bags in for me. It is the thought that counts

ICanSpellConfusionWithaK · 23/12/2025 14:15

Never done it. I get a different driver each time, so it seems like a pick of the draw thing for working close to Xmas to get a tip?!

Growlybear83 · 23/12/2025 14:20

I’ve never thought to tip the Ocado driver - in the 20+ years I’ve been using them on a weekly basis, I don’t remember ever seeing the same driver twice. I’ve always give. The postie and Evri driver a card with a tenner in because I see them on a near daily basis I, and would always tip a hairdresser if I ever went to one, as well as taxis and restaurant staff but have never thought about food delivery drivers

This was always my point when I worked on the checkouts at Sainsbury's. I said something to my Mum about it and she said 'well you don't carry people's shopping into their houses do you' I reminded her that I served hundreds of people a day at Christmas time, some of them spoke to me like shit, a lot of the time I packed peoples bags for them, particularly the elderly and disabled. I'd pack bags carefully and make sure they were evenly distributed on someone's wheelchair / mobility scooter for example. It was knackering, especially hoisting all the slabs of lager off the conveyor belt to scan. The delivery drivers would then tell us they were making £100 plus a day in tips.

I only stayed for one Christmas.

Howyoualldoworkme · 23/12/2025 17:52

I tipped my Waitrose driver £5 today as it was my lovely regular driver and everything was on my order with good dates so I was happy.

Only do it at Christmas mind...

NewGirlInTown · 23/12/2025 17:58

At Christmas I always tip the Ocado driver and my paper boy. Usually £10 each.

Lizziespring · 24/12/2025 18:09

I give the Ocado driver £20 and a card every year, they aren't well paid.

SillyNavyTiger · 24/12/2025 18:18

Is your shopping always delivered by the same guy? Mine isn't, it's someone different pretty much every single time, I've barely seen the same driver twice in one year.

Why would one receive a tip more than the others?

It might be different if it was the same person all year round.

Changename12 · 24/12/2025 18:26

I tip the Christmas and New Year deliveries but I never tip in the year. I also tip the window cleaner and postman.

UninitendedShark · 24/12/2025 18:27

They are not allowed to accept tips at Waitrose.
