DH going to the gym on Christmas Day!

Wifetobe21 · 22/12/2025 22:11

For about 1.5 hours mid morning. A couple of his mates usually go and have roped him in.

He is into his fitness but surely people can give it a miss for one bloody day?!

OP posts:

Which poor souls will be working on Cristmas Day to keep a gym open? It's hardly an emergency service!

1DD age 19 months. My parents will be here too so not just me left with DD

if you have a young child then no, he should not be putting gym over Christmas day...

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 22/12/2025 22:33

I’d love to go for a run on Christmas morning

outerspacepotato · 22/12/2025 22:33

His gym is open?

They might not have to work it...my gym isn't staffed 24/7 but is open 24/7.

nannynannynanny1 · 22/12/2025 22:35

My gym is closed too. What gyms are opened on Christmas day?

jetlag92 · 22/12/2025 22:35

AvocadoJam · 22/12/2025 22:31

My DH does this and it is such a non issue

He goes every day and I'm bloody grateful that he is fit and takes care of himself

I'd rather a happy hil for 22 hours on xmas day, than a grump for 24

I'm sorry that's ridiculous - it's one day.

His gym is open?

The two biggest gym chains in the UK are 24/7.

madaboutpurple · 22/12/2025 22:37

It might be worth checking that the gym is open on Christmas day. I would think most are closed as the staff need a break. Are you sure he isn't making up an excuse and will be elsewhere. You could ask if he can take your child with him. Sorry but it sounds unlikely to me. When I was a member the staff got a few days where the gym was closed.

AvocadoJam · 22/12/2025 22:38

@jetlag92Obviously he is capable of missing a day, but why would I want him to do this? Him going away for an hour or two doesn't negatively affect my day? Why would it?

As the OP, I've got my parents around, the kids will hopefully be playing with their toys, glass of bucks fizz in hand...

I don't need DP attached the the family all day!

Now... if he was off to the pub I'd not be tolerating it.

I honestly feel like the UK has such a negative fitness culture.

Where I'm from, it is standard to do a swim on Xmas morning. Fab tradition!

If have dc’s then no way is this acceptable. Unless you are allowed to go and take a 90 minute bath on Christmas Day of course.

I’d also be a bit suspicious of anyone who claims to go to the gym on Christmas Day. Are you sure that’s where he is?

Indeed. No gym I've been a member of has ever been open on Xmas Day. My current is also closed Boxing day.

Nightlight8 · 22/12/2025 22:39

Pancakeflipper · 22/12/2025 22:23

I'm impressed the gym.is open. The ones near me are shut.

That's what I thought. Are gyms open Xmas day?

My gym is closed too. What gyms are opened on Christmas day?

Quite a lot.

Not everybody observes Christmas.

I go to The Gym and it's closed on Christmas Day.

MySweetGeorgina · 22/12/2025 22:40

Yeah is he leaving you to hold the baby, look after the guests and prepare Christmas dinner?

or is he great and hands on and gives you time off when you need it too

as that makes all the difference really

DeadlyDozen · 22/12/2025 22:41

I expect my gym is available Christmas Day. You can go unsupervised outside classes so long as there isn’t an event on. It’s a CrossFit gym so just a warehouse “box” set up. Staff coach classes but don’t supervise personal use so no one has to work it for people to go.

Gymbunny2025 · 22/12/2025 22:42

I would go if my gym was open

Dontgochasingrainbows · 22/12/2025 22:42

I'm planning on taking the dog for a walk on Christmas day - more for my own head space than the dog's heath. Is there any reason I shouldn't do this?

Denim4ever · 22/12/2025 22:43

Pancakeflipper · 22/12/2025 22:23

I wouldn't be impressed if I worked there unless the overtime was spectacular

GingersOwner26 · 22/12/2025 22:43

Bit surprised it's open

Inwhitelights · 22/12/2025 22:43

I’d go if it was open but it’s not so I’m going for a 10k step walk instead.. on my own 🥰

CaffeineChaosandCuddles · 22/12/2025 22:45

Gosh, people are so ‘Lardy darrr, let him do what he pleases’

that’s okay, 99.99999% of the time - but id be miffed being left on my own for 1.5 hours on Christmas morning, that’s time to be cuddling up watching a film, or eating breakfast with Buck’s Fizz… not being left on your todd while he goes off. I’m on your side. You are NOT unreasonable!

BruFord · 22/12/2025 22:46

Are you annoyed because he’s leaving you to do the grunt work or is this a sign of something serious, I.e., he isn’t able to miss even one day of his exercise regime?

I have a relative who has an exercise “addiction” (not sure what to call it, but it’s similar to an eating disorder where the sufferer has to exercise to burn calories). It’s quite disturbing.

Your DH is probably just hanging out with his mates, but if it’s a compulsion, that’s different.

peoplesuckpeoplesuck · 22/12/2025 22:47

Our local gym is open 10-2 on Xmas day. I always go running or cycling on Xmas day as otherwise it’s boring as fuck, so I’m with your husband. If you're someone who works out regularly, you feel a bit crappy if you don’t - I’m a much nicer person after exercise so I get why he’d go. As long as you can have a couple of child free hours on your own at some point then I don’t see the issue.

Manova14 · 22/12/2025 22:47

Perfectly reasonable if you also get 1.5 hours to leave the house and do something you enjoy on Christmas day
