When one of the Dead Ringers did an impression of Keir Starmer on the RVP tonight there was alot of booing.
ITV kept it in too.
How embarrassing for Starmer.

Which policies specifically?

You might not know anyone but for a start talk to people in hospitality, SMEs and look at the big drop in graduate jobs in a year.

People don't want to hear the good things though, they just want to moan constantly.

Increased funding to the NHS? Is that “real” tho?

currently we have the ridiculous situation where doctors, who we have spent £1.5m training, are not able to get jobs in the NHS, rather they are ending up at Tescos or having to seek work in Australia a country which welcomes them with open arms and pays real money to their doctors.

I understand the increase in funding is paying for the increase in minimum wages for lower level staff and the increase in pension and NI costs.
so it is not in fact an increase in real funding as it plugs a gap created by government policy.

Labour seem to be absolutely rap at PR and getting this stuff out there.

Maybe, but I genuinely wonder how you cut through in a media environment where people seem to prefer a personalised algorithmic media feed, often spewing pretty deranged or inaccurate 'news', which just reinforces their prejudices, to more balanced news outlets? You can't force people to follow political parties or government comms channels, although I know Labour have started working more with 'influencers' to try and get the messages out, which might cut through a bit.

Ultimately I think people need to take some responsibility to inform themselves about what the government is actually doing, good and bad, and come to some kind of judgment on that. I don't mean following the news obsessively, which I think is quite unhealthy, but just taking stock now and again. The country doesn't seem to me to be wildly better or worse than it was in July 2024 (although I could point to some improvements which other people have listed, and I'm hopeful of more - the animal welfare legislation today is also really welcome).

Starmer didn't come into power promising radical overnight change or wild charisma, and he and his government have pretty much delivered what was on their manifesto. I don't really understand wild swings in opinion towards the guy.

I don't know what an SME is. And I don't know any graduates.

What cover up? An inquiry was launched two weeks ago by the Home Secretary:

Anne Longfield

Former children's commissioner Baroness Anne Longfield to lead grooming gangs inquiry

Baroness Anne Longfield will chair the three-year inquiry which has been beset by problems.

Its neither here not there what I think.

It just shows how much hate there is out there for the real Keir Starmer.

Lots of politicians get booed.

Looking at the audience, most looked very wealthy!

We’re quite wealthy. Mostly, I look like a tramp😁

OK. In under a year Starmer’s govt has rejoined Erasmus, strengthened workers rights, pushed through renters protections (including ending no-fault evictions), set up Great British Energy, secured new trade deals, backed UK industry/jobs, and started planning reform to unblock housebuilding.
Not everything’s fixed overnight.

Governments don’t undo 14 years of damage in 10 minutes.

He’s also tackling issues that matter to young people, from reducing knife crime through stronger policing restrictions on buying knives online and accessing dangerous pornography and community support to keeping harmful online content out of children’s reach (knife crime is already down significantly). His government is also bringing education on consent, healthy relationships, and respect into schools to prevent violence against women and girls before it starts.

Perhaps these issues aren’t important to you

If you’re a stop the boats flag shagger then you’ll also be delighted to hear that migration is down massively too.

700 crossed the channel Saturday. Is that down on the usual 800?

She's referring to the net migration figures, of which small boat crossings are a small percentage: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cn0g0xnr7klt

UK net migration drops sharply to 204,000 in year to June - live updates

The Office for National Statistics says the fall is driven by fewer non-EU nationals arriving for work and study, and a "gradual increase in levels of emigration".

I doubt very much that whoever is in government influences the people traffickers.

Can we stop pretending it’s a small percentage. No one will ever know the true amount of people who enter the country by boat because, by admittance on the government website, the figures are only of the people who they have actually caught.

EasternStandard · 22/12/2025 12:29

Dramatic · 22/12/2025 12:03

I don't know what an SME is. And I don't know any graduates.

SME is just small / medium businesses. I suppose if people don’t know anyone in hospitality, a business or a graduate it’s easier to go with Labour.

But the stress people are feeling from their policies is real, not the DM, algorithms etc

xanthomelana · 22/12/2025 12:31

RampantIvy · 22/12/2025 12:26

I doubt very much that whoever is in government influences the people traffickers.

I think it would influence the people crossing greatly if they realised they wouldn’t get housed and had no access to any state benefits for a set amount of years, so I do think the government could do more to dampen the appeal of coming to this country.

It does. But didn’t Labour pledge to ‘smash the gangs’ anyway?

What would you want the government to do to prove they are taking this issue seriously? I'm afraid I don't see Rupert Lowe as a particularly good faith actor when it comes to tackling violence against women and girls.

Net migration.
I thought all the flag shaggers didn’t care if it was ‘boat people’ students or people coming to work - they’re all foreigners and brown people that you want out, right? You should be happy.

Serious question - what’s a ‘flag shagger’?

VicountBiscuit · 22/12/2025 08:36

Unsurprisingly really. The man is completely detestable. Even my Labour voting friends think he's awful. He clearly doesn't give a toss how he's perceived though.

I bet they love Starmer’s belief in The Female Penis, though. That’s frightfully modern Labour, don’tcha know? 🥂 🍾

Parsley4321 · 22/12/2025 12:41

@GreenGrass555 they are deliberately not standing up to Muslim communities that have systematically hidden this travesty they are an absolute disgrace and traitors to this country. Rupert Lowe maybe what you say but Atleast he’s putting his money where his mouth is. Jess Phillips losing her shit in parliament was not a good look and showed where her loyalties were

TheAutumnCrow · 22/12/2025 12:43

Terrytheweasel · 22/12/2025 09:29

I have a lot of respect for Starmer. There are undoubtedly things that he could improve on but he’s doing some great work. People need to stop reading the dailymail.

He’s not exactly adored by the comrade writers of the Morning Star.

I'm afraid I just don't see it like that - the Home Secretary has launched an inquiry, yes, one victim has expressed unhappiness with the process but that's one in a group of many, and other groups have welcomed it. How is that covering anything up? Jess Phillips has spent a lifetime working on violence against women and girls (she worked for Women's Aid for a long time before Parliament), why on earth would she not want to see perpetrators brought to justice? Using this kind of language of 'traitors' and 'betrayal' to describe political opponents is making democracy impossible in this country.

I would strongly advise you to read the news, and stay off algorithmic media, it has a vested interest in whipping up hate against everyone not on the far-right, and making everything in this country look as bad as possible. It's not healthy for individuals or society. The vast majority of people, including Labour voters and politicians, are disgusted by grooming gangs and want to see the perpetrators brought to justice and victims supported.

Absolutely. Lowe has an agenda and we all know what it is.
