Will everyone please STOP the extremely tone deaf 'Christmas Fridge' threads

I see these multiple threads every single year and they drive me bonkers. The four days leading up to Christmas Day my feed is inundated with all the stuffed fridges, it's a complete and utter disgrace. Not just a few posters but sometimes literally hundreds of you all joining in with these enormous overflowing fridges, it's barbaric and in incredibly poor taste. I have already seen THREE seperate fridge threads today alone, it's scandalous... please people just think about what you are doing by jumping on this bandwagon. Now I take this a bit personally and here is why.... There are people in this world who are starving and many families, mine included, are having to rely on food banks this year just to keep our children fed. As in dippy eggs and soldiers on Xmas eve. Many of us are in a dire state with finances and the pressures of Xmas. The fridge threads are incredibly upsetting and triggering. By all means have a nice christmas dinner with all the trimmings but why post it and rub it in the faces of those less fortunate? They will be very lucky to scrape together a very basic dinner for the family this year?

I so look forward to seeing everybody's gluttonous greed in full swing, fridges stuffed full of obscene amounts of food and alcohol that will most likely go to waste. (And waistlines. The greed of Christmas it's all totally out of control and I despair)
All the cheese boards, cheesecakes, cheeselets, and on and on and on.
Honestly I wish MNHQ would BAN the threads, they cause many people anguish and distress.
It is one day so please keep some perspective or even better, pop a selection pack or some small treats in a collection trolley to help all the fantastic homeless charities and food banks ensure more people can enjoy a sweet treat on christmas day.

(Thanks to my local foodbank and those who kindly donated, at least me and my children have a lovely box of celebrations that I will bring out on Christmas Day for us) 🙂

It doesn't turn you into a condescending killjoy as a rule no.

Newsflash: Plenty of us have been on the bones of our arses and are genuinely happy for those who are not.

Well good for you Pollyanna.

The OP doesn’t feel that way.

News flash: if you don’t like what SHE has to say, you don’t have to post- you could just hide the thread 🤷‍♀️

ComedyGuns · 21/12/2025 22:38

OP I haven’t actually seen any of these threads yet but I don’t know anyone I really life who gets excited by a stuffed fridge at Christmas. Most, like me, are excited about creating a special roast dinner on the day with a couple of nice puddings and lovely wine.

I’d imagine the people you’re referring to are the type who live for food, and this is their one chance to gorge without guilt.

If it helps, try and imagine what they must look like…

GalaxyJam · 21/12/2025 22:36

Would you say the same about people posting pictures of their kids’ present piles on social media?
Not picking on you in particular, it’s just that you see so many threads on here about how gauche and vulgar it is when people post pictures of the children’s present piles (that I assume they’re also saved all year for), yet photos of fridges filled with treat food is ok?

If the thread very, very clearly says ''Present pile thread'' as the Christmas fridge ones do, I don't see how it's any different?

Nevernonono · 21/12/2025 22:38

It’s one day? It’s at least three and for many a lot more!

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/12/2025 22:38

TempNameForObviousReasons · 21/12/2025 22:30

I did NOT go onto the Christmas topic.
All three have been in active as soon as I log onto Mumsnet. And I am sure there will be many more over the next 4 days.

You don't have to click on them. I don't.

Sorry you're having a hard time this Christmas, but YABU here.Brew

IHateTheElf · 21/12/2025 22:39

Barbaric?

Oh come on now.

Tryingatleast · 21/12/2025 22:39

Op egg and toast is a treat here, my kids love it, as do I. I hope things get easier for you and actually I think you should use this attention as a way to figure out how to change things for you- mn is good about giving suggestions about getting help, financially, employment wise etc.

Neither are ok. Why anyone gives a tuppenny damn what other people eat or buy their children for Christmas is a bloody mystery to me.
I can’t understand the mindset of posting photos of either on Mumsnet.

UncannyFanny · 21/12/2025 22:39

First time on the internet?

Silvertulips · 21/12/2025 22:39

We also grew up hungry - my kids have never know hunger.

I work hard all year and save for christmas. I have done the same for the last 30 years.

£25 a month goes a long way for christmas gifts and food.

I save my tesco vouchers as I no longer need to buy uniform for the kids.

I use the £50 christmas bonus.

We don’t drink but are gifted wine.

Kids get sweet treats in their stockings. That way they each have some themselves, so nothing is wasted.

Christmas in planned.

I am sure other families have lots more. Diamonds, leather handbags, cars I could go on.

Don’t take your anger out over an average family having average celebrations.

I would put money on families pulling together to get christmas underway.

Bridesmaidorexfriend · 21/12/2025 22:39

Yes I feel the same when people talk about having more that 3 kids, there’s people in the world who can’t have kids. Keep your greediness to yourself.

i also see threads about people having jobs, shouldn’t mention that as some people don’t have jobs.

I saw one thread once about someone getting £300,000 inheritance and I felt personally offended because I don’t have £300,000 inheritance.

We should all only post if we can be sure that our circumstances are the same as or lower than everyone else 🙄

PurpleSky300 · 21/12/2025 22:40

Where is the latest Christmas Fridge thread? I saw one for this year but there were only 2 pics in so far!

Newyearnewmewoooop · 21/12/2025 22:40

fun sponge

LargeJugs · 21/12/2025 22:40

Oh yes my fridge is full of the 5p vegetables and a cupboard full of potato’s too. I batch cook with it each year and eat delicious cheap soups for months. I also chop and freeze loads.

Yeah I’m not well off but this is an opportunity to stash each winter.

CornishTiger · 21/12/2025 22:40

It’s so tacky!

I am sorry you are struggling so much. I feel each year it’s getting harder for many families week on week and there is only so much cloth you can cut.

FancyCatSlave · 21/12/2025 22:40

I don’t understand why it is so hard for you to avoid these threads? I only open those that interest me, you aren’t forced to read everything.

I’m sorry for your circumstances but your tone is completely unnecessary-people are not committing sin by indulging in lovely food if they can afford it.

I got divorced this week, I’m not complaining about the threads about weddings and engagements or the happy families this Christmas.
Shit happens to us all at different times. I’ll
be managing my feelings with cheese. That’s perfectly valid.

I hope 2026 brings you better times, you are perfectly entitled to be unhappy about your situation but it isn’t for everyone else to pipe down lest they offend either.

Newsenmum · 21/12/2025 22:41

I’ve genuinely not seen any of these threads. Im sorry youre having such a hard time. If you suddenly had a fridge full of food op it might bring you joy. These things bring people joy and Christmas is all about that. You could say the same about your tub of celebrations.
What about people who havent got a family or cant eat chocolate?
I think best to get off mumsnet and enjoy tme with your family.

Kickinthenostalgia · 21/12/2025 22:41

I don’t post the fridge pics, but I do like looking at others. I’m not sorry that my fridge is packed, im not sorry I save all year so that I can fill my fridge. I’m sorry that your going through whatever your going through. You can’t control others but you can control yourself. Perhaps maybe don’t read threads titled as such. You’re taking your anger out on the wrong people.

Salvadoridory · 21/12/2025 22:41

This thread is horrible. Is everyone drunk? Fuckinghell, talk about tone deaf, this thread is exactly that. Sorry OP, I am ashamed to be a part of mumsnet sometimes, I really am.

MrsMillyFluff · 21/12/2025 22:42

I've had nothing in the past and I mean nothing. My ex husband was paid monthly on a very low wage and I was between jobs, this was early 90's but I've never forgotten how bad it was. . I would have still loved to see the contents of other peoples fridges and larders because I'm a nosey git. It's not their fault that we had nothing. Things will get better.

ThatNaiceMember · 21/12/2025 22:42

I volunteer for a food bank but don't feel the need to criticise the joy others find in their "Christmas fridges". Life can be very hard if this makes people happy great. You can't take everything away so everyone has nothing! Just don't read the threads!

Chainy · 21/12/2025 22:43

Sorry things are so shit for you OP. I’ve just lost my MIL and the threads complaining about in laws sting a bit this year.

malificent7 · 21/12/2025 22:43

Op..Tescos,Lidl snd Aldi are doing 5p veg atm. Get loads of veg and make some tray bakes. Loads of mash potatoe with cheese etc. Try not to hate those with more.... Xmas is a feast after all.
You can do nice food with veg at 5p.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 21/12/2025 22:43

I tend to just hide threads that I don't want to see.
