It’s got to the stage of Christmas already where I cannot face going to any more shops. Shampoo had run out. Dog “fox poo” shampoo on side of bath. Most logical choice at this stage of the year?!

OP posts:

I’ve not had a dog for years but I always absolutely hated the smell of dog shampoo! Who knows if it is ok for humans to use 🤷🏻‍♀️

MaarvaCarassi · 21/12/2025 11:20

Was your fur lovely and glossy afterwards 😄

everythingthelighttouches · 21/12/2025 11:21

love this!!

Eyesopenwideawake · 21/12/2025 11:21

Or just use washing up liquid with a bit of fabric condition afterwards.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 21/12/2025 11:22

I wouldn't personally but fair play!

Frikadelle · 21/12/2025 11:22

MIL used it last time they visited. We only use the downstairs shower for the dog and didn't realise MIL was going to shower there. I didn't notice any difference!

Blueskysbaby · 21/12/2025 11:23

Friend just telling me they were off to Morrisons made me shudder.
I decided after the Friday Asda shop that I wouldn’t be back till after Christmas, I’ll manage with Tesco Express, corner shops and garage shop at a push.
Going out for Christmas Dinner so it’s fine.

needmorebooks · 21/12/2025 11:25

Realise it’s not what you used OP but the brand Bugalugs is tested on humans and smell amazing! Often wondered myself as my dog’s black fur is mirror shiny!!

AuthorisedCat · 21/12/2025 11:28

I used leftover dog eye drops one weekend when I woke up with conjunctivitis - worked a treat and really made my tail wag.

Forever1973 · 21/12/2025 11:28

The difference between dog shampoo and human shampoo is the PH. I forget the details as our little doggie is dead now, but his shampoo had a PH that was different from the PH of human shampoo. I doubt using it once will do any harm at all, but if you used it over the long term, you might irritate your scalp.

Ah good point, didn’t even think of that

Feelikedancing · 21/12/2025 11:29

Mane and tail 😂I mean it was intended for horses but became a big hit with humans so hey, just don't let any dogs sniff your bum 😂🐶

Blinkinblinis · 21/12/2025 11:30

I have a posh herbal style one that hubby left by the bath and I used for a few weeks without realising. I don’t take my reading glasses to the bathroom so it only came to light when there wasn’t much left for the dog. No fleas on me.

Pat on head. Halo

I was thinking that a few years ago I saw the equivalent of colour enhancing shampoos at my local vet 😀

No Idea about the scent of dog shampoo.

Shutuptrevor · 21/12/2025 11:34

I use washing up liquid on my hair once or twice a year to strip product build up, then apply a deep conditioner. Works beautifully, and I end up with soft, silky hair again at a fraction of the cost of a clarifying shampoo!

This has made me laugh this morning.
I mean, dogs have lovely glossy coats so why not.
As a side note, it absolutely blows my mind that cats wash themselves with their fishy, meaty, brothy breath and not only do they not stink, they have beautiful shiny fur. Just how does that actually work??

They have cleansing oil glands. Watch your cat wash - you will see them pay particular attention to particular spots where their oil glands are. The barbs on their sandpaper tongues lift out dirt and stray hairs.

I use my dog's shampoo quite regularly, I like the smell! It's an 'eco' one though so may be less harsh? Hasn't seemed to do my hair any harm so far. Although I tried her 'dog detangling spray' the other day which I wouldn't recommend!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 21/12/2025 11:45

I went to a big Tesco this morning and it was fine. Admittedly, I was there before the checkouts opened and had paid for my full trolley by 10:15am, but it wasn't the total carnage I was expecting.

In answer to your question, no YANBU to use dog shampoo. Though that foxpoo one stinks, so I wouldn't use it as I hate the smell. But in terms of safety and efficacy, dog shampoo is perfectly fine on human heads.

I can imagine that sweetness being liked by the pets and their owners 😄

TON618 · 21/12/2025 12:04

Done it myself the odd time in emergencies. Doesn't do much for my hair, but at least it's clean and I won't get fleas. You'll be reet.

MrsChristmasHasResigned · 21/12/2025 12:08

Use it. And be sure to have a treat afterwards!

BertieBotts · 21/12/2025 12:08

I've used hand soap before.

It's all just soap isn't it?
