I honestly thought those stingy threads must be made up, until I attended a Sunday lunch hosted by a newish friend...

There were 10 adults total - our host cooked 1 medium chicken, 1 broccoli, approx 6 carrots and 6 potatoes for us all to share.

Our plates were bare. Smaller than toddler portions; I wouldn't have believed it, had it not happen to me! It was bizarre.

I can trump this, although will preface by saying it was non Christmas related and said person was a man in his early 20s.

Me and 3 friends out together. 2 female, 2 male. We talk about possibly grabbing food from somewhere. Male 1 says not to worry, we’re heading back to his and he will do us some food there.

We arrive to discover he has 4 burger patties and 2 burger buns. He proceeds to make himself 2 patties in buns. He gives male 2 a single burger patty with no bun and me and the other female half of the remaining patty each.

Bound to be a couple about the turkey being “off” and another where it hasn’t defrosted.

ItsDarkNow · 21/12/2025 23:05

A Christmas fridge complaint thread has appeared.

Refrigerated gifts by any chance?

ApolloandDaphne · 21/12/2025 23:11

I love the Christmas misery threads.

CherrieTomaties · 21/12/2025 23:15

Ready and waiting for the crazy MIL Christmas threads. ☕️

Ready and waiting for the crazy MIL Christmas threads. ☕️

I’m looking forward to those almost as much as my (childish, tat-filled, Definitely-Just-For-Children) stocking Grin

Bleachedjeans · 22/12/2025 01:36

For the first time in 50+ years I am making Christmas dinner for just me and DH. DH is also brilliant at clearing, washing up/doing the dishwasher. Absolute heaven!

canuckup · 22/12/2025 01:39

And the duvet know it's Christmas comments too

I do enjoy the ridiculous ones but not the serious/abusive ones that usually befall some put upon women.

Me, too. I find these threads entertaining until I read one that makes me so angry, like some drunken father ruining the kids’ Christmas or similar.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 22/12/2025 02:01

The ones I like are the ungrateful children threads.

I’m crying and shaking in the bathroom…” because some spoilt brat didn’t like the expensive present.

Absolute gold those threads.

Yes!

Although I have been watching the last few days and it seems quiet really!

Calm before the storm 😀.

Yes I’ve read quite a few already moaning about Xmas plans, cheeky fucker relatives, different ideas on gift giving etc.

We always have a drama free Xmas because we choose to. We don’t host anyone we don’t want to, we don’t buy gifts for anyone we don’t want to, and we don’t put big expectations on the day - it’s basically a few presents, a roast and an afternoon of chocolate and telly.

I think some people secretly enjoy the drama and moaning about how hard it is every year…

We're the same. I never understand these threads from people tying themselves in knots over spending Christmas with people they clearly don't like and never see just because it's "Christmas and family".

Still I enjoy reading all the drama around it!

Makemeanonymous · 22/12/2025 07:32

Well if anyone needed any proof about how unpleasant a lot of MN posters are they only have to read this thread.

Bluescissorsbluepen · 22/12/2025 08:04

My first Christmas on Mumsnet I was reading a thread where the op was trying to guess what her MIL had given her, lost of shaking and poking the present. I never saw the result because I hadn’t made an account and hadn’t worked out how to use the site properly. I was a new mum and a know it all relative advised me not to become one of those mumsnet mums so I had to see what was all about and found nothing but a good time. I will be reading when I’ve had too much of my family and want some time to myself.

I never understand the “they are family, so you must spend time with them.”.

If they are twats, you treat them like every other twat and don’t bother with them.

RedRiverShore6 · 22/12/2025 08:07

I look forward to tales of the off turkeys

Absolutely. My brother is a selfish miserable arsehole, hates Christmas (that's not what makes him miserable or selfish), visits my parents for an hour out of duty and makes it clear he'd rather be elsewhere and any Christmas Dinner spent with him at my parents is spent listening to him whingeing and moaning throughout the meal.

I don't invite him to my house and when the time comes when my parents pass, I still won't invite him. Absolutely zero guilt here around it.

Purplewarrior · 22/12/2025 08:27

I’m in!

I really feel the cold so I particularly enjoy the threads where ILS house is so cold you can see your own breath.

I remember one where the OP was told to come and warm herself up by the electric fire - which wasn’t actually on. Just the light under the fake coals was on. 🤣

Letsgodancing · 22/12/2025 08:43

I do like them too but some are very sad especially when it's clear that they get treated like crap by their other halves, there's already one on here where her bf hasn't been able to get the perfume she wants as he couldn't find it in the shop (guarantee he didn't even try), and I'm sure there will be plenty of similar ones over Christmas, even if you hate going to the shops, these days you can order online and delivery straight to the door.
Also when the in-laws will have had a few too many drinks and start spouting off, than there's a row and they are never coming to the house again and it's all forgotten by the end of January 😂

luckylavender · 22/12/2025 08:50

Oh yes, naff presents, favouritism, heating, potion sizes, one slice of toast to feed a family of 6, too much / too little alcohol and dogs.

BettysRoasties · 22/12/2025 08:58

I’ll bring the popcorn for those creative writing stories lol
