40 year old films, Xmas specials from half a century ago, bake-off and the bloody McIntyre wheel? That's the best they can come up with? And as for ITV - what kind of self-loathing maniac wants to watch Lorraine on Xmas morning? The only thing that sounds half decent is Amandaland. What are they playing at?

I'm quite surprised that people still watch live TV. I don't at all, really, apart from the news. My elderly father does, but it must be a minority these days, surely?

I have a friend who despite having Sky, Netflix and Prime (that I know of) will still occasionally moan there’s nothing on - meaning live. And still says she’s setting series to record on Sky when they are all available as catch up or box sets anyway. Some people don’t seem to have altered their watching habits much.

cardibach · 22/12/2025 12:19

CarlaH · 22/12/2025 11:39

We still watch proper television although most stuff is recorded and watched when we want to watch. I do notice when people who are commenting in real time whilst streaming something live say that their signal has broken up or is buffering and am glad that isn't something we have to worry about.

Not a problem I ever have now I’ve got decent internet. Even with bog standard it hasn’t happened for about a decade thinking about it.

Bodhifatva · 22/12/2025 12:19

It's been awful for years. I used to love Christmas TV, but I don't think there's anything on I would want to watch, and that goes for streaming too.

So, it looks like I'll be watching old episodes of Ghost Story for Christmas (gotta watch Whistle and I'll come to you at this time of year) and old Christmas specials from back when they were actually worth watching (One Foot in the Grave, League of Gentlemen, etc).

I really hope you’re joking! I’d rather poke needles in my eyes than watch any of those. (But we’re all different so Happy Christmas anyway).

I can’t wait for the Night Manager on New Year’s Day.

Streaming isn’t much better if you were planning on watching man vs baby don’t bother it’s awful

That’s like saying “Don’t watch live TV as it’s all like Mrs Browns Boys”.

There’s countless fantastic shows on streaming these days.

I think maybe it might be people with a Sky dish which is affected by the weather.

I was a little disappointed with the new knives out.

Edited

I was so disappointed, as I loved the previous one. But there was way too much of a focus on the “main” young priest character, and I feel like the (amazing) ensemble cast was wasted, even Benoit Blanc. Caveat: Josh Brolin was amazing it, especially watching it as someone who has had run-ins with American-style evangelical Christianity (including the memorable American pastor who told me I was sick because I owned Harry Potter books… I’m Scottish, you fucking nonce - I’m required to own them by law). In the course of two days, I watched “Wake Up Dead Man” and “Conclave,” and of the two, if you want a riveting movie about faith, I’d recommend “Conclave” (free on Amazon Prime).

berlinbaby2025 · 22/12/2025 13:35

I’ve now had a detailed look at the listings and the most appealing shows are - what a surprise - streaming. Amadeus and The Lowdown.

Rednotdead · 22/12/2025 14:07

Every year I live in hope of snuggling up on my sofa with a (bottle of) Baileys and a box of chocolates, watching some really good tv, and every year I’m disappointed.

@ponyprincess I'd like to see as you say things that everyone can watch eg Dr Who, Wallace and Gromit. And I miss Xmas top of the pops, which kept going long after the regular programmes, again everyone could watch it, it was all big tunes from the year that you hear on radio even if you're not particularly plugged in to current music.

Also not specifically for Xmas but BBC used to do Dickens adaptations in winter that ran across Xmas, in the early 2000s, they were great, and M R James adaptations.

And they used to have genuinely good recent films, or at least old proper classics golden age of Hollywood type stuff.

But, I guess my Fantasy TV Xmas Special would be Alan Partridge. I would love to see that.

An Alan Partridge Christmas Special would be AMAZING. I, my DH, his DB, and his parents are all Alan Partridge fans. Have you watched “How Are You? It’s Alan”? A lot of proper laughs over here while watching.

Mumsknot · 22/12/2025 14:29

Pluribus final on Xmas eve
Amandaland (I do find it funny)
stranger things
Night Manager series 2
London nature thing on new year’ s day

I think that’s enough telly for me anyway!

We tend not to watch TV on Christmas Day, I haven’t even looked at what’s on.

I was wondering who actually watches TV on Christmas day, the last time I watched it on the day was probably in 1980 because my grandpa used to like to watch the Queen's speech.
We never watch it on Christmas Eve or Day. When we get together as a family we talk and play games but mostly talk. Why would you want to stare gormlessly and silently at crap Christmas TV when you are spending time together often with family you don't live with. Surely it's more interesting to talk with them? We e been like this through all ages of children and grandchildren.

Not everyone has family or is able to see them at Christmas. Not everyone is like your family or likes doing the same things. It’s really not hard to understand.

I'm sorry you appear to have the emotional range of a teaspoon, but not everyone has family or friends to spend time with on Christmas Day.

My childhood stuff of nightmares.
Hated all thag stuff but was forced to watch it as there was no choice.

xmasstress12 · 22/12/2025 15:26

Agree

Just spoke to DH and there WAS a Christmas special of “Knowing Me, Knowing You” called, appropriately, “Knowing Me, Knowing Yule.” It’s available online and on various streaming services. Perhaps a good Christmas Day option. It was really lovely last year when they had the new Wallace and Gromit; they’ve always been a part of Christmas for me (I saw the original short films over Christmas when I was younger), so it felt a bit special.

Why do you think people are staring gormlessly? It’s possible to pay attention and then chat about what you watch.

shellyleppard · 22/12/2025 15:41

Bbc4 last night......the generation game from 1979. Paul Daniels magic show from 1980 something. Why do we bother paying for a TV licence that just shows endless repeats??

She’s trying to show how superior she is to all the plebs who enjoy a bit of TV at Christmas.

chipshopElvis · 22/12/2025 15:51

Agree, but I'd love a costume drama what happened to a bit of Dickens and Agatha Christie.

FurForksSake · 22/12/2025 16:01

I think there is a costume drama ghost thing in, the room in the tower in Christmas Eve at 10pm on bbc 2. That will be worth a watch.

greenwithglee · 22/12/2025 16:15

channel 4 are releasing a new film each day, most are 20 year old, and pretty low grade. I dont know why theyre making such a fanfare over such shit
