40 year old films, Xmas specials from half a century ago, bake-off and the bloody McIntyre wheel? That's the best they can come up with? And as for ITV - what kind of self-loathing maniac wants to watch Lorraine on Xmas morning? The only thing that sounds half decent is Amandaland. What are they playing at?

I think the latest Mission Impossible is on Sky.

We will probably watch that as well, DH will definitely want to watch that, then I can watch CTM and Eastenders in peace later if there as been a couple of film on

LighthouseLED · 20/12/2025 22:43

Sesma · 20/12/2025 22:39

Thanks, we will probably watch Sinners, though it doesn't look very Christmassy😆

It isn’t, but it is well worth watching (though I did have to shut my eyes for some of the gory bits)

berlinbaby2025 · 20/12/2025 22:43

Money is a factor like never before because of how expensive it is to make some TV shows. I note there’s no Agatha Christie adaptation this year but next month a new one drops on Netflix.

I’m impressed BBC2 are showing Oppenheimer, tomorrow.

I’m looking forward to Amandaland, mainly because of the characters rather than the writing. A lot of the TV shows on over the next two weeks have a basic, bargain basement, twee vibe which doesn’t appeal. They’re relatively cheap to make.

xmasstress12 · 20/12/2025 22:45

I don’t watch Death in Paradise, Call the Midwives, Dr Who, Beyond Paradise soaps etc so have no interest in the Christmas specials.

Sesma · 20/12/2025 22:46

Madame Blanc is on Tuesday and The good ship murder on Saturday so looking forward to them but it's not Xmas day

Supersimkin7 · 20/12/2025 22:49

The Beeb budget goes on pensions so they leave it to Netflix to make tv.

Poonu · 20/12/2025 22:51

I'm excited for Amanda land

TheWytch · 20/12/2025 22:51

We discovered last week that the TV is faulty so there will be no TV at all this Christmas for nor for our houseful of guests.

ohyesido · 20/12/2025 22:51

I miss the Doctor Who specials back when they used to be good

Sesma · 20/12/2025 22:54

Hallow road is on Sky as well so there are some films

NotAnotherScarf · 20/12/2025 22:56

Don't worry the BBC will still spunk £1m on lineker next year even though he's not doing the football.
Sadly like many organisations the BBC and itv think they know how to attract people..
McIntyre...as funny as having your fingers shut in a car door.

    • Ranganathan is a tick box exercise...there are funny Asian comedians...he's not one. Sanjeev Kohli is a genuine funny guy but for some reason doesn't get the work.

Remember Morecambe and wise had 50% of the whole country watching..
These losers get 2% watching and they do a lap of honour

xmasstress12 · 20/12/2025 22:57

There isn’t enough of it but I still think the BBC makes some brilliant content.

FurForksSake · 20/12/2025 23:06

They do make some brilliant content, blue lights and riot women have been brilliant. Channel five play for today has been really good. But, not reflected in the Christmas schedule.

Stuffed looks watchable, finding Santa or something on c4 looks ok, we like the 1% club and the kids like the masked whatever. We watched the piss crack ham and Michaela thing this afternoon which was nice. It feels like trying to find diamonds in the very, very rough.

Sesma · 20/12/2025 23:06

The thing with Christmas Day telly is that it has to appeal to all so in our house a series is out of the question, CTM will not appeal to DH or DS, likewise Eastenders so it needs to be something they might like earlier on which is generally films

Denim4ever · 20/12/2025 23:07

Fupoffyagrasshole · 20/12/2025 22:07

But you could watch Wallace and Gromit / dr who or Alan partridge or any films you like if you want - why does it need to be on live tv?
plus if you stream it there’s no ads

There are ads if you stream on the apps unless you pay for no ads. Both progs mentioned are BBC so no ads

Denim4ever · 20/12/2025 23:11

xmasstress12 · 20/12/2025 22:23

@Sesma

It depends what you like.
I love Emily in Paris so that’s on my list as is Stranger Things,The Holdovers. Down Cemetery Road, F1 (Apple), The Roses, (Disney). The dc have quite a long list.

On non streaming I am looking forward to Amandaland, Ghost story, Two doors down, peep show bake off, the Night Manger, Challengers, new Harlan Coban thing

Challengers and Holdovers are major

CautiousLurker2 · 20/12/2025 23:12

I did a trawl through the pages yesterday and came to the same opinion. Thought maybe it’s because I am old and have seen all those movies a zillion times, but many of the films are older than me!

I have been recording over the month to be sure we have a staple of good stuff, but won’t be watching the main channels.

Am wondering what I pay my licence fee for now as everything we watch now is recorded or streamed.

Sesma · 20/12/2025 23:13

All the series I'm watching on streaming on Paramount, Disney and Apple are weekly so I can't watch them when I want anyway. A lot of series are like this now on the paid for platforms.

You need a licence to record, we have to have one for SkyQ or it wouldn't be worth having

Cappie73 · 20/12/2025 23:20

Is there a Beyond Paradise Christmas special this year?

FurForksSake · 20/12/2025 23:24

@Cappie73 yea

berlinbaby2025 · 20/12/2025 23:25

Denim4ever · 20/12/2025 23:11

Challengers and Holdovers are major

The Holdovers isn’t on terrestrial TV.

Maraudingmarauders · 20/12/2025 23:29

We are excited for Scsrecrow’s Wedding, if only so I have a break from the other Julia Donaldson animations we watch far too regularly!
I have to admit I miss childhood Xmas telly, we would all circle what we wanted in the radio times. Xmas day was always Dr Who and we loved watching Morecombe and Wise reruns as DF would reminisce about watching it with his parents. Sometimes a Carry On in the afternoon whilst DM was cooking. Lots of nostalgia in Xmas telly that now doesn’t exist for me.

FurForksSake · 20/12/2025 23:32

Dh and I ended up inadvertently watching one of those channel 5 clip shows about Christmas tv of yesteryear in the last week. We actually enjoyed it and reminisced about vicar of dibley and the proper old east Enders 😆

Thecows · 20/12/2025 23:37

Yes, I used to love those Dickens adaptations, remember Great Expectations with Gillian Anderson about 20 years ago? It was brilliant, on 3 nights in a row. I honestly don't think it's ever been shown again which is such a shame. I did a double take yesterday seeing Russel Harty from the 1970's was on, I mean for the love of God, not even his closest family would want to watch that surely? It's sad 😢
