Just got shouted at in a coffee shop for coughing in public 🥴

I know I’m not being unreasonable here but I just need some reassurance! I was in a coffee shop after popping to the shops and got a tickle in my throat. I’ve had a cold all week but nothing too severe. I coughed and next thing I know an old man is shouting at me that I’m being selfish and should be self isolating at home, and “don’t I know the NHS is on its knees?!”

AIBU to think this is a total overreaction to a cough?!

I’ve not mentioned a hotel. Are you well?

🤣🤣🤣
apologies OP
it was Xeno I think

I’m not well, as my pp I’m on antibiotics because I picked up something from someone when out. I didn’t even stop for a coffee 🤣🤣 so it wasn't you OP

Hope you are well soon

No, I said the NHS department that deals with porters is called Hotel Services. You are the one who asked why I was on about hotels. I wasn't.

Xeno didn’t mention hotels. She was talking about the fact that porters, cleaners and various other NHS staff providing similar services were employed by the NHS department known as ‘hotel’. Totally different. You misinterpreted and you’ve been deflecting ever since.

Good point not everyone would get reasonable adjustments for sinus issues

but whether they are or not depends on how it affects OP

So sinus issues can be classed as disabilities and people can in fact be protected under the Equalities act and be entitled to reasonable adjustments.

To add because I forgot I have no idea how bad OP is just that she’s seen anENT doctor
So I couldn’t comment on that regard

OP has said she’d be sacked if they took time off work so went in whilst ill. she isn’t incapable of working then due to her illness. Just chose to work whilst ill in a hospital with patient contact and without a mask

My comment related to the chances of her being sacked just because she’s off sick. There are protections for people and you can’t simply be sacked just because of illness.

That’s nonsense.

Now. As OP mentioned a hotel perhaps hotels have a different policy and less protections….i don’t know….

Edited

To be blunt, you’re filling up this thread with a load of irrelevant nonsense. If you want to discuss sickness policies in the nhs, please feel free to start a new thread about it. It’s not what this thread is about.

Whatever the ins and outs of OP’s sickness entitlements at work, I can say with confidence that she, along with everyone other employed person, should not be going off sick when they are feeling absolutely well just after getting over a cold, sinus issues or not. Nor would they have any entitlement to be off in that situation.

OP is WELL. SHE IS NOT SICK. Sorry for shouting, but the constant posting about sickness entitlement is getting incredibly tiresome and I’d like you to stop please.

This. Go to a park, if that desperate to get out, not a coffee shop, full of people, when clearly still ill, and liable to spread whatever bug they are harbouring.

I get coughs that linger for weeks - as do many people. I have mild asthma and a cough long past the infectious phase can continue to bug me. It’s basically just a tickle in the throat that can send me into big coughing fits. I’ve been like this all my adult life.

You can’t put your life on hold and stop going out because people with health anxiety might think you’re infectious (when you’re not.)

Yep plus I think people need to be realistic about the level of colds in the public. And if they really want to avoid it choose a park over a cafe.

Threads move on @eastegg Discussion diversifies. That’s conversation and Mumsnet

You'll find I didn’t start the issue of being sacked if off ill I responded to it and in fact from page one posters weren’t focussing on the exact question OP was asking.

As I said This is Mumsnet

Both the points you make, that you didn’t start the derail and that threads move on, I took into account when I posted. This derail has been particularly irrelevant and pointless, and as far as I can tell you have been the main one driving it and the main one saying the most irrelevant things. So I stand by my point.

Carry on if you must. But my opinion is valid and I’m entitled to express it, and it seems I’m not the only one finding you a bit tiresome.

Agree of course !! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion
and

It’s Good to have that

Hi folks,

There appears to be a bit of a spat going on here and it's derailing the thread. Can we draw a line and keep the discussion on topic?

OP is quite clearly not in a caring role. I would imagine she’s in some kind of clerical or admin position.

No it’s not. Words are just words . Physical illness is worse

Edited

A culture where it's ok to shout at strangers for breaking social rules (and this isn't even a universally accepted one!) sounds worse to me than sometimes catching a cold.

Calliopespa · 23/12/2025 17:19

XenoBitch · 21/12/2025 19:24

Where is the guidance that states this? Are we in 2020?

There isn't guidance: I think that pp was just talking about being generally considerate. There is no guidance about holding doors open for people either, just an informal code of conduct.

Of course the OP is entitled to go out for a hot chocolate if she wants. But some people will judge that as selfish. People who do shouldn't shout, but they are perfectly entitled to make that judgment - just as op is entitled to make her decisions.

No, that PP was trying to claim that the NHS has issued guidance saying anyone with a cough should be self isolating at home.

No one should be shouting
but imo physical is worse than verbal

I’d agree in terms of physical vs verbal assault.

but verbal assault is, to me, worse than the risk of catching a cold - which could happen anywhere.
