Gabriel Oak was not a bad boy! The sexy villain of that piece was Captain Troy.

Yes. Gabriel Oak was the salt of the Earth solid, dependable good guy. Troy was a womaniser who got a girl pregnant and left her to die in the work house then married Bathsheba for her money.

Oliver Reed, maybe.

The character Bill Sykes, definitely not.

It's the same person. If you're basing it purely on looks then they are one and the same.

WithYouShortieWithYou · 20/12/2025 20:42

He is terrifying and had an even more terrifying dog IIRC. The red flags would be hanging off him if they hadn't also flown away in terror. No no no no!!!!

soupyspoon · 20/12/2025 20:46

Pedallleur · 20/12/2025 20:19

No he doesn't. He tries to drown him but Bullseye gets away and leads the angry mob back to Sykes. Hurrah for Bullseye!

In the film

Im not sure about the book, is that also what happens?

He was an abused child wasnt he, victim of CCE and probably CSE

I can't separate one from the other in Bill Sykes. He's a violent psychopath, which kind of overshadows the "quite handsome" part.

But he’s NOT REAL!!!

Thedownwardspiralpath · 20/12/2025 20:48

Oh no ! He looks like he smells really really bad. 🤢

When I engage with films, TV, novels or audio plays, the characters are real for the duration of the production. That's the point of watching/listening/reading.

Doesn't he just! Although must say I admired Nancy's dress which had its own ventilation system (ripped at the armpits)

Pedallleur · 20/12/2025 21:01

Victorian London. So I imagine everyone who was poor smelled bad and they are near the river that is probably full of sewage. They probably all slept in what they were wearing. Unlike Mr Brownlows house with its clean linens, fresh chamber pot/indoor plumbing and maid service!

Oliver Reed was incredibly handsome and his voice was amazing. Not worth a black eye though.

You can always cover one til he blacks the other one, but you don't dare cry!

I hope someone gets this reference! I'm not saying anyone should put up with getting a black eye!

You know he would never wash his hands and if he did would wipe them on his trousers. Those expensive kerchiefs were to be sold not to be used as snotrags

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 20/12/2025 21:09

Oliver Reed was so handsome , a great sense of humour and a really good actor . I can see why you like him and find him sexy.

Okay …but that doesn’t mean others are wrong for seeing a fictional character as just that ..fictional.So OPs comments are in that light , not a reflection of how she feels about abusers in general.

I get you completely.

I'm not sure this is entirely true. Lots of people would find Charlize Theron attractive, but not in character as Aileen Wuornos, for example.

Also, I'm happy to be corrected, but I don't think the OP specified that we were only allowed to consider his looks. In fact, I think by saying the character name it's quite the opposite. Otherwise she would have just said Oliver Reed. I think she meant Oliver Reed as Bill Sykes was sexy. I have to say, not for me. He's grubby as Bill Sykes and that's not a look I'm into.

Pedallleur · 20/12/2025 21:18

Can imagine he was a nightmare to live with. Probably v.funny and charming at the start of the night but once on a bender or roistering with Keith Moon or Richard Harris you would be in a taxi home and told don't wait up and that would be it for a couple of days

But she didn't ask 'was Oliver Reed sexy as all hell in that film?l'

She asked 'was Bill Sykes sexy as all hell?' And he wasn't. He was a scary, violent man.

And she found him sexy. And thats okay because she knows he’s not real.

I usually fancy vampires but I wouldnt fancy someone in real life who did that.

who cares though, it’s a character??

HRTQueen · 21/12/2025 00:04

Oliver Reed was so attractive always had an edge to him

he should have played Heathcliff the part almost seems written for him right looks, swagger and that danger about him so hot but so wrong

HRTQueen · 21/12/2025 00:07

I think Oliver Reed was attractive what ever part he played

a bit like Marilyn Monroe looked good in anything even a potato sack

Mistyglade · 21/12/2025 00:10

Flutters indeed.

Sometimeswinning · 21/12/2025 00:17

I liked Daryl in Walking dead. Even when he was considered a racist redneck. It’s the dirty, unkempt look i assume. Tom Hardy in Peaky Blinders. Perfect to me!

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/12/2025 00:38

Daryl was never a racist red neck. Merv, yes, Daryl, no. That was the juxtaposition with the two of them.
