DH has had an awful hair cut.

DH has recently had his hair cut and it looks really awful. He used to have lovely curly hair, which I genuinely loved, but he’s shaved the sides so now it’s like some sort of strange mohawk situation. I honestly can’t get used to it.
He’s a creative and isn’t working much at the moment, and I can’t help wondering if this haircut is related to that?
The problem is every time he walks into the room I’m shocked all over again. I try not to react but I must look visibly startled because he’s noticed I’m not a fan.
I know it’s his hair and it will grow back, but AIBU to feel irrationally annoyed by it? Has anyone else struggled to adjust to a partner’s drastic hair decision, or do I need to get a grip and pretend I like it until it grows out? But I’m also worried that it’s going to grow back all strange lengths!

It's a shame you don't like it, but as you said, it's his hair.
When it next needs cutting, you could perhaps gently suggest something less drastic, but you can't really say anything at the moment.

It is his hair. I have made some (really) bad hairstyle decisions in the past and tbh once it is done it is done. It just has to be accepted until it grows a bit. You don't have to like it but just respect its existence and that your DH also has to live with it.

btw I have heard that when a woman suddenly cuts all her hair off it could be a cry for help (think of Brittany Spears as an extreme example). So yes, this change could be related to his work right now.

174ghxt · 20/12/2025 11:12

YANBU to dislike it but you can't really say anything. At least he's got hair!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/12/2025 11:13

That seems to be the fashion among the fourteen year old ne'er do wells around here! I mean, you really can't say anything, it IS his hair, but you might try pointing out all the scallys and the skateboard boys with the same haircut and he might not try it again.

BabyHairs · 20/12/2025 11:14

I cringe when my DH shaves his beard completely, he still looks great without it but I find it jarring.

While it is his face he doesn’t do it anymore because my reaction was ‘😳☹️’ and he says I have to look at his face more than he does.

Weirdly enough he also has curly hair and if he doesn’t shave the sides he turns into a mushroom, how was it cut before?

hidinginthebathroomagain · 20/12/2025 11:15

My DH used to have nice rocker hair. Shaved it all off in lockdown and has kept it that way. I’m still not used to it. He looks like a different person.

MasterBeth · 20/12/2025 11:15

If he's "a creative" then he is just adjusting to his tribe. 2020s mullet. He'll think it looks cool. It's just fashion.

BillieWiper · 20/12/2025 11:18

Would you think it ok for him to be 'annoyed' about your new haircut?

There's nothing you can do about it. Either he gets another haircut that you might also hate or you wait.

But yeah it won't grow back evenly at all. But then no haircut does on men? Except a skinhead. Even then it doesn't because of how the follicles are. Or if it was a straight across trim on long hair.

He had kind of long curly hair. Same length all over. I’m not great at describing men’s hair!
It looks like he’s trying to be young a rebellious. He’s 38. And it’s just not the right cut for his hair texture.

Oh god, so many truly cringe haircuts for men now.. shaved sides, dead cat on top. Appalling. Wtf is wrong with them? Can’t they see in the mirror they look like neglected nineteenth century orphans?!

Not2identifying · 20/12/2025 11:44

Does your DH have a sister? We can be very blunt! I once told my brother that his haircut made him look like the North Korean dictator.

tlofmlwcharlie · 20/12/2025 11:52

It's a trend and it'll blow over and he'll have a different haircut in the future.
So many awful men's haircuts around at the moment which are in fashion but look terrible.
At the end of the day it's his hair though and he can do what he likes with it.

MyAmusedPearlSquid · 20/12/2025 11:58

At the end of the day it's his hair so his choice

MrsArcher23 · 20/12/2025 12:05

It’s only hair. Keep repeating. I’ve been teaching all boys for over 30 years and my DS currently has a mullet so I have cause to remind myself of this mantra regularly.

Sausagescanfly · 20/12/2025 12:05

Is it like the poodle haircuts that teenage boys seem to have now?

Maybe all relationships are different, but I've not kept a hairstyle my DH didn't like, despite compliments from other family members and I'd expect the same from my DH.

TinselAngel · 20/12/2025 12:06

My approach would be to mercilessly take the piss. “Oh look, it’s Henry from Neighbours” etc

MrsSlocombesCat · 20/12/2025 12:30

If you think it's bad at 38 my brother has this haircut in his sixties!! I didn't think anyone who had a mullet first time round would do it again. 🙈

ForPearlViper · 20/12/2025 12:48

You could try what my Mum said after my Dad got a bad haircut. "Dear God, it looks like a donkey ate it". It has added impact in an Irish accent.

cantbearsed27 · 20/12/2025 12:54

A 'creative', no job and shit hair? Let's hope he's a really nice person and great in bed or he's not really got a lot going for him by the sounds of it.

You're allowed to hate his hair OP, you don't have to be some kind of fake inauthentic people pleaser and pretend it's great. If he asks just tell him it's not your taste - although by the sounds of it he won't need to ask 😂.

Does he like it?

Stephy1886 · 20/12/2025 13:04

Tell him to have a little grow up

GooseberryGreen · 20/12/2025 13:27

My dad who was a bit careful with money found a really cheap barber. My mother didn't waste her Irish accent on criticising his haircut. She just refused to be seen in public with him till the worst of it grew out and forbade him to use the same barber again.

vanillalattes · 20/12/2025 13:42

I mean, he can't change it now so there's not much point in saying anything.

Gettingbysomehow · 20/12/2025 14:16

Im a terrible person Id have said, bloody hell what have you done 😂
My ex husband once suddenly decided to shave his beard and moustache off. Id never seen him without either in 20 years, he's a big hairy biker. He looked like a giant baby, absolutely repellant. I avoided him until it grew back. I never could get that image out of my head after that.

Sminty2 · 20/12/2025 19:24

About 5 years into our relationship, we were on holiday in Cornwall and my DP went to the shower. He just randomly decided to shave off his beard and moustache!

When he walked back in, I screamed as I didn’t recognise him at all. He honestly looked so different and I was horrified that he had a weird bum chin I had never seen before

It took a long time to get used to it and I just wanted him to grow it back. He did, but it was a difficult year and it really threw me. I know that sounds really shallow but a complete change of how someone looks is weird.

We were married for 40 years before he died though, so I did get used to it, and so will you. You might want to buy him a woolly hat, so his ears don’t get cold and you can’t see it 😊

Gliblet · 20/12/2025 19:30

DH shaved his head once. I hated it.

The thing is, if I had my hair cut and it was my choice of haircut, and I liked it, I would politely invite him to do one if he complained about it, so I kept my mouth shut and when it grew back in I praised that look to the skies and made it very clear that I love it when he has hair. Any hair 😁 Not the aforementioned 'I ordered Phil Mitchell from Temu' look... Last time he had his hair cut he came home and said 'I got them to leave it a bit longer on top because I know you prefer it'.
