To wonder if my NDN has someone sleeping in her loft?

DH and I were woken up at 3am by a noise above us which we thought was coming from our loft. It was prolonged over about 10 mins. Sounded like something hard being dropped and rolling around and then things being moved about. Then I heard what sounded like a plug being put in to a plug socket. The noise sounded purposeful and like it was human rather than animal. DH got up and hit the ceiling with a pole a number of times and the noise stopped and didn’t start again.

For context, we have had squirrels nest in the loft in the past and have also heard birds from time to time (We’re talking around 10 years ago) so we have experienced animal noise directly overhead before. We had someone from pest control round and we think we have blocked off all access routes from the outside.

Our next door neighbour is a bit of a nightmare. She rents out rooms and has lots of male immigrant types coming and going. There have been many incidents over the years and she/the address is known to the police. At one point I was concerned for her as she seemed to have at least 3 men living there who appeared to be drug dealers. She does not have a loft conversion.

Anyway back to the noise. As I said it felt almost like it was human and controlled rather than coming from an animal. When I told DH that I thought I heard what sounded like a plug in a socket he started to wonder if the noise was coming from next doors loft rather than ours. It would still feel and sound like it’s overhead. It seems weird that it stopped and didn’t start again once DH banged on the ceiling.

What a judgmental virtue signalling sanctimonious unsympathetic comment to question the phrase “immigrant type” which is a perfectly valid descriptor. OP has valid concerns and is asking for advice not a moral lecture.

You must have incredible hearing if you can tell someone is putting a plug into a socket one floor up.

Not really - DD’s bedroom is the other end of our house to the our kitchen, if it’s quiet I can hear when she swaps plugs round. Sound travels in mysterious ways!

Our house is "noisy" i can hear plugs and movement and sometimes just house noise from the neighbours it isn't that unusual i don't think?

Ide check there’s not a small cannabis grow going on in your or her loft

This was one of my thoughtst it just sounds really dodgy people back and forward, and plugs in the loft. Although wouldn't it smell?

There isn’t in our loft. DH was up there 2 weeks ago getting the Xmas decorations down. How will we know on her side?

I have to admit though that it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility with the type of activity going on there. We can even smell weed a lot of the time. Although that tends to be outside the front of the house and I quite often see her tenants stood outside her front door smoking.

The more I think about it I can’t believe it hasn’t crossed my mind before. I think another report to the police is in order.

When I heard plugs being put into sockets, it turned out to be rats scratching fyi.

This is still a possibility and as I said we have had squirrels in the loft before. But that noise was constant every night. The fact that it stopped completely once DH banged on the ceiling made me feel like it was human.

Oh I read you can smell weed, honestly I would report it to the police are you private or housing association?

Owly11 · 20/12/2025 12:12

Not the point of the thread but there are some very naive people on this thread who can't even name that some people in this country are illegal immigrants and that they are undesirable. If they were wanted here (ie desirable) they would be legal immigrants. It is obvious from the op's posts that there is much illegal activity going on next door involving immigrants who are very likely here illegally, so 'immigrant types' is a rather polite and accurate way of describing them.

Been reported many, many times. Not just by me but by other people on the street. The address is known to the police.

So do people think it’s likely that the noise was from a human?

I don’t think there is access to our loft from next doors loft but this particular spot over our heads is quite hard to get to so we haven’t been in that area other than when we were looking for squirrels.

The immigration status of your neighbour’s lodgers and the words you used are irrelevant, but we get the picture. She is a landlady in a house of multiple occupancy and her lodgers are usually unsavoury people who have had run-ins with the law and can be antisocial. Not nice for you or her other neighbours.

Given this background and the noise you heard, I suggest you make an effort to go up to the attic and inspect the area that is difficult to reach. For all you know she has people living in her attic unofficially or even extending their roof space into your attic.

Good!

It needed to. Problems cannot not be discussed and dealt with because certain topics are verboten, thus being one of them.

By not even showing a discussion about illegal immigrants for fear of being “offensive” not only are residents made to suffer the consequences the migrants are too. Welcome to the UK. You now owe your trafficker £20k which you’ll have to pay off with slave Labour while living in slum conditions that some unscrupulous bugger will charge you for knowing you can’t complain as your here illegally. Great for everyone 🙄

Lolapusht · 20/12/2025 13:48

OP, thinking about it…if they are growing weed get the polis involved as they may try and nick your leccie or may have all sorts of dodgy electrics that may set your house on fire 😱😳
