To wonder if my NDN has someone sleeping in her loft?

DH and I were woken up at 3am by a noise above us which we thought was coming from our loft. It was prolonged over about 10 mins. Sounded like something hard being dropped and rolling around and then things being moved about. Then I heard what sounded like a plug being put in to a plug socket. The noise sounded purposeful and like it was human rather than animal. DH got up and hit the ceiling with a pole a number of times and the noise stopped and didn’t start again.

For context, we have had squirrels nest in the loft in the past and have also heard birds from time to time (We’re talking around 10 years ago) so we have experienced animal noise directly overhead before. We had someone from pest control round and we think we have blocked off all access routes from the outside.

Our next door neighbour is a bit of a nightmare. She rents out rooms and has lots of male immigrant types coming and going. There have been many incidents over the years and she/the address is known to the police. At one point I was concerned for her as she seemed to have at least 3 men living there who appeared to be drug dealers. She does not have a loft conversion.

Anyway back to the noise. As I said it felt almost like it was human and controlled rather than coming from an animal. When I told DH that I thought I heard what sounded like a plug in a socket he started to wonder if the noise was coming from next doors loft rather than ours. It would still feel and sound like it’s overhead. It seems weird that it stopped and didn’t start again once DH banged on the ceiling.

If your bedroom is on the party wall then it is possible for a noise next door to sound as though it's coming from directly above. That said, I'd make it a priority to get upstairs in your loft and check all areas, especially near the party wall, to ensure there's no evidence of break through from next door. The pp suggestion to have a lock on your loft hatch from your side is also a good idea.

Have reported this concern in the past! As I mentioned above at one point she had 3 men living there that appeared to be dealing drugs. Leaving and returning to the house many many times over the course of the day for short car journeys.

Apparently they are people who appear to be drug dealers. Do keep up!

Men who don't speak English seems easy enough (based on what you know and less words than you have used here). Get a cheap activated sound recorder & put It In the attic. If you record plugs regularly being pulled check with planning and speak to your local fire brigade. Ongoing criminal activity next door is awful though.

How do you know they don't have official documents? do you so a passport check every morning?

Oh come on, we all know what OP means and she has described very well what she meant. Let's not pretend everyone who has moved to this country is here legally and skilled.

The loft hatch has a step ladder affixed that comes down when you open and can only be opened from the house side.

I thought the same as @Haupt . If you heard a plug going into a socket, it might have been for a UV light. You’ll soon know because it will stink I think. I also think the police would be interested in that.

@Eyeshadow mentioned cuckooing. If you are worried that she is being coerced into having this stream of men staying at the house, then I think you should report it to the police and/or Adult social services. That has got to be a really awful situation for someone to be in.

If they are doing anything dodgy in their loft they will probably be very quiet now as your husband has alerted them that you can hear them. So at least you will get some peace.

FFS, stop reading the daily heil and go and look in your loft. Try to work out if they are connected. Do you even have a plug in your loft?

If she’s not got people in your loft there is very little more you can do apart from reporting to the local authority. She may have had an urge to go and find some Christmas decorations in her own loft. She may have converted it to a bedroom or in the process. It might have been something completely different entirely. 🤷‍♀️

Possibly growing cannabis in the loft? Could explain the plug (lights/ heat lamps)

The creepiest thing that happened to me like this was I heard similar sounds from above my head from the loft when I was in the bathroom (we have a wood panelled ceiling that has been like it since we moved in). Next door were having some work done so I assumed it was the sound travelling strangely from next door. I was stood directly outside the shower with a towel wrapped around me and I heard 2 men talking and say “do you think she’s going to get in there?”. I looked up at the ceiling and then one said “do you think she can hear us?”. My DH was in work. He went up when he came home and there was no sign of anything. To this day I don’t know what was going on.

So I think anything is possible - even someone finding a way into your attic when you were asleep.

Maybe it’s immigrant male squirrels ? They’ve evolved to now use plugs perhaps they use an air wrap for their tails

You must have incredible hearing if you can tell someone is putting a plug into a socket one floor up.

Our NDN used their loft as bedroom, even though they shouldn't have done. Their son used it and smoked and drank up there. He accessed it via a ladder on the landing! We then decided to have a loft conversion and they absolutely shit themselves in case they were found out (party wall agreement etc..).
So maybe tell your NDN you're thinking about having the loft converted and planning need to check both lofts..

@AnnieLummox not really. It sounds directly above our heads. I can hear the same coming from the bedroom conjoining ours on the neighbours side.

Speak to the NDN and mention that you’ve heard noises and you suspect she might have an invasion of squirrels or other vermin ( I know you said it sounded like controlled activity but at least you’re getting it out there that you’ve heard it). See what she says - she might explain, she might not.

Even watching tv in the living room, we can clearly hear plugs being put in, in the bedroom above us.

You know - shifty looking swarthy sorts, mean little eyes, smell funny, always stealing stuff from good honest indigenous Brits, often they have tails.

If she's known for lodging illegals? Then submit a report to the police. Don't alert her.
