To email the teacher

my daughters (secondary school GCSE year) teacher is really good, very dedicated and committed and just an excellent teacher and lovely person. Would it be weird to send her an email thanking her for all her hard work and wishing her a lovely Christmas?

OP posts:

I’m sure that the teacher would be delighted.

I read on here that a character reference sent to the Head can be a brilliant gift as it remains in the personnel file and can be used if the teacher moves to another job.

IndolentCat · 18/12/2025 13:49

Your gesture prompted me to do similarly @Princesspollyyy so thank you!

LyndaLaHughes · 18/12/2025 14:15

Teacher here. This is the best gift any parent can ever get you. These messages are treasured and can really lift you on a good day.

LemaxObsessive · 18/12/2025 08:24

Yeah I’d see that as a bit sucking up-ish and an attempt to get your child ahead in some way. Say it at the end of the school year with a thank you card. Can you imagine if every parent sent an email? His/Her inbox would be full!

Noooooo! I am a teacher and.qoukd love to get messages like that it makes the hard work worth it

I can only imagine in my dreams the day that every parent is this grateful for the effort teachers put in! Maybe that’ll also be the year that 40,000 teachers don’t leave the profession 😢

LemaxObsessive · 18/12/2025 08:27

🙄😆😆 As if they don’t have enough to do! There’d be an awful lot of eye rolling going on if they received a suck up attempt a matter of months before GCSEs and will be judging massively. Sorry OP but it’s got elements of bribery imo.

What is missing from your life to make you seek attention in this way? Such very odd behaviour

I’m another teacher (currently on holiday hence why I can post) and I say do it. It is so lovely to get positive messages, especially at the end of an exhausting term, it’s nice to be appreciated! Emailing the office (or Head) is also really appreciated, and gets passed on in my school. I also agree to be specific, it really makes it all worth while!

I misread your user name and did a double take - didn’t see the ‘r’ at first

Not a teacher? Inbox full of appreciation emails, HaHaHa…

Yes, do this, it makes us feel seen and valued and is very very rare!

Brickiscool · 18/12/2025 15:55

Absolutely send it.

The suck up answers are ridiculous. It's secondary school. GCSEs are marked externally, there is is no benefit to sucking up at all. Totally ridiculous comments.

Send the email and make a teacher happy

This is a very odd view.
Please do send the email- it will make the teacher’s day!

Jok77 · 18/12/2025 17:11

I'm a teacher (KS1) and these messages make my day- it is the icing on the cake! It will, without a doubt, be appreciated.

sakura06 · 18/12/2025 17:19

YANBU. It’s lovely to have emails like this! I would be thrilled.

Totally agree! Parents are quick to complain but don’t think this happens as often.

As a teacher it’s so lovely to know that the children are telling their parents that they are happy in school and to know that people think you are doing a good job. An email of appreciation is always appreciated, and I’d love a full inbox of these!

Snakebite61 · 18/12/2025 17:26

No.

Goddessoftheearth · 18/12/2025 17:35

I emailed my sons Form Tutor at the end of year 7 to say thank you as he’d struggled settling in the first couple of terms and she was amazing with him. She write straight back to say thank you. Teachers have a tough gig and it must be nice to be appreciated.

WinterCarlisle · 18/12/2025 17:35

I’m not a teacher but loads of my friends are. I have 2 children in secondary school, both with SEN: I’ve sent in cards and chocolates to their form tutors and the SEND team. They’ve all been completely excellent and so supportive over the last term.

My friend who’s a HOY9 came over last night and she’s literally on her knees with stress and exhaustion. She’s by far not the only teacher feeling like this. My card and chocolate isn’t going to change anything but if it makes a few teachers feel a tiny bit more appreciated then that’s all that counts.

To all you teachers on here - thank you. You deserve so much more 💕

ParmaVioletTea · 18/12/2025 17:38

It's a lovely idea.

Be sure to give an appropriate title to your email - something like "Thank you" so your teacher knows it's not another carping email from an entitled parent, but quite reverse.

A lovely idea!

ClemFandangosHair · 18/12/2025 17:39

You sound like a lovely thoughtful person. I teach and all the teachers I know would just love this. Copy in the principal or head of department and you are onto a winner!

As a teacher in a senior role at a secondary the only things I would think are

  1. what a lovely message.
  2. what a great job the teacher is doing.

Sucking up or bribery wouldn't come anywhere near my thoughts!

mamaduckbone · 18/12/2025 17:49

Yes absolutely!
I opened this expecting an end of term moan and was ready to pile on with 'please give teachers a break - they're knackered and human too' but this is so lovely and will really make her day.

Pancakeflipper · 18/12/2025 17:50

I've often sent emails of thanks to staff at DS's secondary school. He's SEND and he'd really struggle without their support and kindness.

Bunnycat101 · 18/12/2025 17:54

I’m really glad you sent it. I’m conscious that a lot of my communication with the school can be when I’m having a moan but I also try and make sure I say thank you for things like residential trips or things where a teacher has made a real effort.

mamaduckbone · 18/12/2025 17:56

@LemaxObsessive I feel a bit sorry for you if you think that every kind gesture is 'sucking up' - sometimes people just want to be nice.
