my daughters (secondary school GCSE year) teacher is really good, very dedicated and committed and just an excellent teacher and lovely person. Would it be weird to send her an email thanking her for all her hard work and wishing her a lovely Christmas?

Wow @Princesspollyyyas others say, please ignore @LemaxObsessivewho is quite wrong. An inbox full of thank yous would be great!

Cosyblankets · 18/12/2025 10:43

In was a secondary teacher in a tough school in a deprived area. I can still remember when a parent took the time to write a letter to me to say how much their daughter enjoyed my lessons. That was maybe a little over 20 years ago but I still remember it

Nevertriedcaviar · 18/12/2025 10:47

It will be a lovely thing to do. I am sure the teacher will really appreciate it.

Princesspollyyy · 18/12/2025 10:47

update

Ive had a lovely reply from the teacher, saying how grateful she is to me for sending the email, and how it means so much to know how much her work is appreciated. She thanked me for my support x

Im so glad I sent the email x

Also send one to the head teacher

Leopardspota · 18/12/2025 10:50

It’s soooo nice getting emails like this. Her heart will sink when she sees a parent email (expecting a complaint or moaning!) and then she’ll read, be happy and realise it doesn’t mean she then has to do 10 other things! Honestly it will mean the world to her.

You have just inspired me to write a thank you email. I hope the head office passes it on (business not a school).

Linksrechtsgeradeaus · 18/12/2025 11:12

I'm not surprised that it was so well-received. It's good to express appreciation, especially to those who are rarely given it.

I still remember the grateful reply written to me years ago by the director of our local theatre when I praised a production. They are so used to criticism.

Eh? Have you misunderstood the issue?

zingally · 18/12/2025 11:33

Speaking as a teacher, I'd absolutely love that!!

Kind messages from parents and pupils are always massively appreciated.

Did you mean to quote @LemaxObsessive instead of @CrispySquid ?

TheaBrandt1 · 18/12/2025 11:52

My parents are teachers so we are quick to recognise their efforts. One of my emails got read out in the staff room apparently! People so quick to complain I like to do the opposite

I did! Oops!

LemaxObsessive · 18/12/2025 08:24

Yeah I’d see that as a bit sucking up-ish and an attempt to get your child ahead in some way. Say it at the end of the school year with a thank you card. Can you imagine if every parent sent an email? His/Her inbox would be full!

And, as a teacher, that would be lovely. Better than having an inbox full of complaints anyway!

But yeh, I'd also Cc in the Head or their line manager. I sent a similar email to my child's teacher's Head this Christmas. It meant a lot to the teacher.

liquoricetorpedoes · 18/12/2025 12:09

I’m another teacher (currently on holiday hence why I can post) and I say do it. It is so lovely to get positive messages, especially at the end of an exhausting term, it’s nice to be appreciated! Emailing the office (or Head) is also really appreciated, and gets passed on in my school. I also agree to be specific, it really makes it all worth while!

ldnmusic87 · 18/12/2025 12:11

Please do it!

napody · 18/12/2025 12:13

Lightuptheroom · 18/12/2025 08:43

Do it, make sure you put thank you in the subject line and cc the head teacher

Agree re subject line- lets them know immediately it's a nice thing not a chore!

I've ccd HT in before when it's thanks for something specific eg taking the kids on a residential. I probably wouldn't for a general thanks and merry Christmas, but if you're mentioning some particular support that they've provided or how much your child enjoys their class, no harm! Depressing when people see it as sucking up- people thank their babysitters 10x as profusely as they do their children's teachers, and babysitters just sit on your sofa eating your snacks!

SheWillBeTheDeathOfMe · 18/12/2025 12:29

My daughter’s school has a specific thankyou@ email and sends a reminder at the end of each term that it is there to shout out any teachers who deserve it, I think it is lovely

Lamentingalways · 18/12/2025 12:33

I would like it! It would make my day actually. As long as you’re supposed to have her email address (not sure in secondary if it’s given out freely)

I am so disillusioned with teaching. I’m not sure I can even face going back into a classroom (having a break) and I’m a good teacher. I stand outside my children’s classroom door and hear 95% of the Mums just absolutely ripping school to shreds for everything and I just think it’s getting worse and worse so knowing someone thinks you’re doing a good job is everything.

user789543678885432111 · 18/12/2025 13:02

Thanks - you reminded me I wanted to thank a teacher. I have sent an email too.

Yes it’s ok, she had already emailed me a couple of times as my daughter had an award one month, and she sent me the certificate by email x

Do it. They can put it in their appraisal paperwork which will mean not only is it kind its really useful too.

Pricelessadvice · 18/12/2025 13:35

As an ex teacher, this would mean so much to most. To know you are appreciated is lovely.

RollOnSunshine · 18/12/2025 13:36

Yes please do. It will be much more appreciated than the shitload of chocolate, mugs and candles that are dumped on teachers gifted at the end of the school year.
