Last night I watched The Two Ronnies Xmas Special from 1982 and Sorry! from 1988.

i literally laughed out loud at some of the sketches in the Two Ronnies -

and Sorry! is an excellent example of my VERY favourite TV genre -

Home Counties set,
middle class,
middle aged,
middle England, ‘
’middle of the road’
sitcoms 🙌

AIBU to want these programmes back on linear BBC1 and ITV?

I’ve been thinking about this as regards the Good Life! I think the issue was that I thought the theme of the sitcom was that Tom and Barbara were working/ lower class while Jerry and Margo were posh middle class. I didn’t grasp the ‘self sufficiency’ theme at all!

This isn’t surprising as because I was born in 1972 so much too young for the original airing - I’d only likely seen repeats. As a young kid, I could grasp a crude understanding of ‘social class’ but I wouldn’t understand the concept of a suburban couple going ‘self sufficient’ as quite simply I’d never have seen it in real life so wasn’t aware if was a ‘thing!’ - the. concept totally went over my head!

on another note, I’ve just been speculating that the main cast must’ve earned a fortune in repeat fees alone over the years!

I also got it wrong but in my case I thought that Margo and Jerry were supposed to be a conservative middle-aged couple while Tom and Barbara were a younger and more rebellious couple. It was only when I saw the opening episode for the first time (I'd missed it on its original showing) did I realise that both couples were about the same age.

Has anyone mentioned Steptoe and Son yet? The writing was so poignant but funny at the same time. Two characters who obviously loved each other deep down but were essentially trapped in this bickering co-dependent relationship.

The very epitome of a situation comedy.

I mentioned it! It was brilliant, way before my time but I loved it! Albert was so cantankerous and his poor son suffered!

Can't imagine anything more insipid and boring than Sorry.

HRTQueen · 18/12/2025 11:41

Its comforting TV

Though I think the funniest thing Ronnie Corbett has done is his part in Extras 😁

I loved Sorry too

I pretty much imagined her the same except the glasses!

Also remember Mrs Doomes-Patterson who we also never saw!

No!! I thought I was fairly well up on sitcoms but this completely eludes me!!

I don't remember that one, but I do remember he was in 'My Wife Next Door' with Hannah Gordon - it was a bit lame from what I recall!

Nobody's mentioned Just Good Friends - LOVED Paul Nicholas!

She was a “big” woman! Didn’t she have a large horse to mount! 🤣

God I loved “To the Manor Born”. When she organised a dinner party “I am so sorry we are uneven numbers - Marjory couldn’t get a man!”

Sartre · 18/12/2025 12:45

They don’t really work nowadays. They tried to bring Open All Hours back didn’t they and it flopped. There’s probably other examples of this. Times have changed and with that, humour has developed and altered. It would likely be popular with pensioners but few other people.

It was brilliant! Penelope Keith was so well cast!

Audrey was quite mean to Marjory!

“Oh, Marjory! You and your herbal cures; you smell like a compost heap."

I never ever bother with ANY remake tbh

I actually preferred Still Open All Hours to the original, and I'm quite young (although neither are my favourites as I can't stand David Jason) and I think it was actually well-received at the time. It was cancelled due to the pandemic.

That being said, I've recently found a new appreciation for Last of the Summer Wine, so...

wonder if we ever saw Margo riding

She was a “big” lady and two groomsmen had to help her mount her horse. Apparently it was a very funny sight!

I don’t think we ever see Margo actually ride. Tom and Barbara go to the riding school to ask if they can have the manure for their garden!

While I was scrolling about the good life - saw HI di Hi and some mothers do ave ‘em!

frank Spencer on the roller skates - betty asks the nieces if they want to skate and they are like no thank you we like watching uncle frank! 😂. As he zooms down the road out of the rink 😂
