So my kids in 2022 had flu A and my 2 year old got sepsis after being ignored by doctors s just a virus for a week after multiple trips, he recovered and he is ok.. skip to last year they then got flu A again a much milder strain but we’re still very poorly and now this year it’s everywhere again and seems to be an awful strain and I’m just dreading it.. before anyone says.. non of us are vaccinated we are to to date with all vaccinations and I’m really not an anti vaxer.. but I don’t know how I feel about the flu spray if I’m honest.. doesn’t look like they are working much.. I’m just also anxious about it.. how is everyone else feeling?

Yeah it’s not just me.. I’m it against it all I just see lots and lots of people saying that they have been flu jabbed this year and it making no difference or they seem to be the ones that are getting it

Any evidence for this?
i don’t believe the responses have been hateful however your original and subsequent posts seem to demonstrate a complete lack of research. You’d be less anxious if you had more knowledge.

emmetgirl · 17/12/2025 19:48

So you’re really concerned but DIDN’T get vaccinated or have your children vaccinated?
can you explain that to me again but try and make it sound logical in some way?

I've never had a flu vaccine and never got the flu as have millions of people. The reason they only offer it to the vulnerable is that it's not necessary for most people.

Correct. You get offered the flu vaccine if you are elderly, immunocompromised or have a health condition that puts you at increased risk of complications of flu. Children are also at an risk group. OP isn't vaccinating her children against it but is then worried about it??

Shellyshep · 17/12/2025 19:50

No not worried, haven’t given it much thought tbh. I’m almost 50 and never had the flu in my life or a flu jab for that matter. I never had Covid either and I refused to be vaccinated but did regular tests to make sure I wasn’t passing it to others without knowing I had it. I’m not anti vax as I used to fly so had lots of vaccines to be able to enter different countries safely but something about the covid jabs put me off, I just didn’t buy into the pressure they were putting on everyone. I don’t see what there is to be worried about but if you are that worried then get the jabs I guess

My kids get the flu vaccine at school. It’s free and I don’t have to organise it! I thought all primary school children were offered this?

I normally pay for a vaccine for myself but went to several places this year without any luck and had to give up in the end.

That said, still not concerned about it particularly. I’m not vulnerable in any way 🤷‍♀️

Kids in England primaries are definitely offered it. I hope the rest of the UK but don't know. The problem is that parents have to provide consent, so it is reliant on them to agree/provide the consent.

Flu vaccine this year is providing 70-75% protection in children against attendance or admittance to hospital this year - it is very much working.

I had a flu jab..4 days later I got the flu that changed to a chest infection.5 wks later after 3 lots of antibiotics and steroids I was finally on the mend.2 wks later I am still not up to strength,I'm constantly tired and have no inclination for anything...I will definitely wear a mask when I go out..

ChampagneLassie · 17/12/2025 19:55

I’ve got it, it’s horrible. This is the illest I’ve been in around 15 years. I sincerely regret not getting vaccinated

Lolajane80 · 17/12/2025 19:56

vanillalattes · 17/12/2025 08:18

If you were that concerned you’d get the flu jab.

Plenty of people I know who had the vaccine still got influenza a this year and had it just as bad

You are fortunate to be able to get the vaccine. My son is 16 and in 6th form. He can't get the vaccine at a pharmacy as he is under 18. And he can get it at school or at the doctor's surgery as he is not clinically vulnerable. It is beyond frustrating, especially during the super flu epidemic.

My DD17 had it at a private GP the other day. £35 for the appt and £25 for the jab. Worth every penny.

I'd imagine all the private GPs will do them.

Let them build up their OWN defences

Caughs, colds ... get over them

Flu isn’t a cold though
how far do you go?
polio? Tetanus? Measles? Confused

Wow! I understand people think agree with the vaccination but wasn’t expecting so much hate for it, I take it all of you felt safe covid vaxing your kids? I’m not saying I’m against it, my daughter used to have it every year and one of them years had a very funny turn with it so wasn’t sure again and my youngest was off at the time it was given and have thought about getting it done since but wasn’t sure wasn’t saying I was completely against it ..

People go mental when it comes to vaccine chat ! Any slight deviation from being entirely pro vaccine and you're immediately labeled anti vac and vilified.
I know many people who had the vaccine this year and had influenza a just as bad the the ones who didn't. It made no difference.
My sister in law even managed to have it twice and she was vaccinated.
My child reacted badly to a flu vaccine once which was really frightening so I absolutely refuse to give it to her again

Incelebration · 17/12/2025 20:07

Have to agree with everyone else. Makes no sense to say you're anxious about the 'flu but then announce that nonE of you are vaccinated.

You think the risk of the vaccine outweighs all of these worries you've mentioned?? Makes zero sense 😂

Your later comments about those getting the vaccine more likely to get flu, based on what? A pool of 5 people you know, or scientific research you've carried out?

I'm calling troll.

Covidwoes · 17/12/2025 20:16

Not worried as my kids have had the flu spray, and I have had the jab.
I don’t understand why people wouldn’t protect their children. There was a girl in the news earlier in the week whose dad was hugely regretting her jot having the spray. She is in a coma with encephalitis caused by flu.

Blizzardofleaves · 17/12/2025 20:16

The only people being flippant about this flu are those that haven’t had it. Get your dc vaccinated.

Yes I 100% felt safe Vaccinating my kids.
My dd had covid before they rolled out the vaccine and it was the MOST sick i have ever seen her in her life and she was 16. She cldnt breath, she had a dreadful rash that covered her body, she cldnt move her legs properly, it was horrifying. So when it came to the vaccine, you can bet your ass we all got vaccinated as did anyone who knew me, because it was the scariest thing I ever saw in her.
Im dumbfounded your child had SEPSIS and you declined something that could help them. Just Shameful. Staggeringly so.

KidsDr · 17/12/2025 20:19

The only protection you can offer your children is the immunisation. My children are immunised as am I.

It was inevitable that I would catch flu as there have been dozens of children unwell with flu in the hospital in the last couple of weeks and I've spent a lot of time in enclosed spaces with them.

I became unwell but fortunately it only lasted a couple of days. Then my children got the same illness but it was very brief, around 1 day. Very likely to have been flu but thankfully our immune systems were prepared by immunisation to deal with the infection rapidly. That's how the immunisation works. Flu has swept through the school and it's very clear from the communication between parents that those children who did not get immunised have been more sick and have spent longer off school. Still some of the parents don't see it and are trying to blame the immunisation which their children haven't even had.

But you don't need to rely on anecdotal evidence. There is very good epidemiological evidence that the immunisation reduces duration and severity of symptoms, as well as severe complications. Whilst being extremely safe.

I'd love to see your oh so wonderful and well educated immune system giving a little tinkly laugh to something like Ebola.

Not worried, but none of us are 'vulnerable'. I don't believe i've ever had flu. Its possible our pensioners may get carried off by it, but that risk is always there - flu, covid, pneumonia, a fall...

Flu kills young healthy people every year too.

Fundays12 · 17/12/2025 20:37

I have had it and its horrible. I am very allergic to the flu vaccine because of underlying allergies i have so cant have it. All my kids got the flu a couple of weeks prior to the flu vaccine being given out in there schools. All were quite unwell but on the mend now. I know of people who are seriously unwell with it and our local hospital is full because of flu admissions. I work in schools and its rife in schools.

DebbyP90 · 17/12/2025 20:40

Hi, I know people who have really struggled with this flu strain. My son had the nasal vaccine and has been poorly since last weekend but he has been okay. The worst he has experienced is a high temp for 24 hours and it seems to have given him a slight chesty cough. He has a very good immune system and usually doesn't suffer too bad with illnesses.
I had my flu vaccine as I am asthmatic and so far have only struggled with a headache and enlarged tonsils but all seems to be okay and manageable.
My husband on the other hand, who has the immune system of an ox, has it currently and although he seems to be managing it he is experiencing more symptoms than what he would with other flu strains, it also seems to be lasting longer too.
It is hitting people harder. My advice, if you have concerns and your children have been affected seriously by flu in the past, is to get them vaccinated every year.
I have had years where I have missed my vaccination just because I couldn't be bothered to go (stupid, I know, but lesson learned) and those are the years I always struggle with flu and end up with temperatures of 39-40C. I will never miss another vaccine and nor will my son.
