It goes without saying you have to be a very selfish person to eat this at your desk?

My colleague returned from Tesco on her lunch break with a pot of boiled eggs from the food to go counter. She ate these at her desk and I struggled not to gag.

Surely it goes without saying that this isn’t an appropriate lunch to inflict on others in an enclosed space?

Eggs and fish just smell like eggs and fish. They are just food smells, maybe strong but not gross.

Smells are a normal part of life, you need to learn to deal with them. If they make you gag, then learn not to gag. It's not other people's responsibility to not eat foods because can't deal with normal smells. We're not in primary school ffs

Erin1975 · 16/12/2025 17:59

Do boiled eggs smell particulary strongly? Can't say I have ever noticed if they do.

Chemenger · 16/12/2025 17:59

Hard boiled eggs are a standard cold snack. The famous five eat them all the time with lashings of ginger beer. Enid Blyton never mentions any accompanying retching.

Topseyt123 · 16/12/2025 18:05

I don't see any issue with hard boiled eggs.

Spicy curry leftovers from dinner the night before might be more of an issue but I'd still be OK with it.

You can't police what people eat.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 16/12/2025 18:06

I've solved this by using an air freshener spray. The thoughtless people soon got the message.

😂

Same, it made me laugh!

soupyspoon · 16/12/2025 18:13

This is why we have a terrible food culture in this country

Smell taste and texture, people are horrified by it

Go to other countries and they have big strong flavours, eyes, ears, tails and feet on display and ready to be cooked up into something tasty, fish, cheese, fermented and smoked foods, strong smells in bars/bistros and shops. Hams and salamis hanging all over the place.

Never get over the supermarkets you walk in and you can smell the meat and fish and cheese, just like when I was young and now everything is highly sanitised to death. To our death actually.

I would hazard a guess the microwaving a mackerel in an office is a tad more intrusive than eating a hard boiled egg or egg sandwich/salad 🤷‍♀️

You’re her aren’t you. The office egg gobbler

I wish they kept the laugh reaction😀

Shitmonger · 16/12/2025 18:18

I wouldn’t be able to stand it either. Boiled eggs smell really strongly to me and the stench of them makes me nauseous.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 16/12/2025 18:19

I've only ever seen cold boiled eggs on those counters and they don't smell more than most foods.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 16/12/2025 18:23

Its the ones who microwave the fish in the tearoom and they know exactly how utterly revolting it smells.🤑
So selfish

Ladamesansmerci · 16/12/2025 18:23

There are some dramatic people on this thread. Sure, some foods smell vaguely unpleasant, but if you can't be around a food smell without gagging and retching you have an issue.

On a side note, I love the smell of spicy food!

2 people at work (who I really like so I don’t want to say anything negative) regularly have fish curry - which they heat up in the microwave in the staff room which has an internal door but no window! There is no time to go elsewhere for lunch and we don’t have desks as we aren’t office staff.
Also there are certain staff on all protein food due to diets / mounjaro who sit there & eat boiled eggs, tinned mackerel etc.
Great.

Mackerel in a small space...aggh! Only thing worse is microwaved mackerel or other oily fish.

Everything else is a breeze next to that!

Coffeeishot · 16/12/2025 18:30

Do people not eat mackerel cold ?

Switcher · 16/12/2025 18:36

Mystified. I eat them regularly. They're cold. Never even crossed my mind they'd smell of anything.

KilliMonjaro · 16/12/2025 18:39

If it goes without saying why are you posting?

They are eggs. Grow up!

MimiGC · 16/12/2025 18:40

An old colleague of mine used to microwave tinned mackerel. The smell permeated the whole building.

DedododoDedadada · 16/12/2025 18:42

I don't like eggs myself but i thought they were a fairly standard lunch item, microwaving fish is definitely more anti social

There is one woman where I work and she is constantly munching on food throughout the day and she doesn’t keep her mouth closed! She then complains she is overweight (she is obese.)

We had a coworker who would loudly eat large packets of crisps every day. I’d be trying to concentrate & I’d hear “rustle rustle rustle CHOMP CHOMP chompchompchompchomp (silence) CHOMP CHOMP chompchompchompchomp” all day. It nearly drove me mad. Then she would brag about how she and her husband are clean-eating vegetarians And she’s so much healthier than those of us who eat meat. 🙄 Everyone sitting near her complained enough that they moved her to an area closer to her manager.

Mumofyellows · 16/12/2025 18:45

Eggs are a huge trigger for me, I can’t even look at someone eating a boiled egg without wanting to vomit. I don’t eat them, the smell to me is absolutely revolting of eggs in any form. You at not being unreasonable in my eyes!

Edited

It’s so antisocial of them isn’t it! It’s good that she was moved.

Thats a you problem though isnt it?

Something unreasonable about you that you need to deal with.

Grapewrath · 16/12/2025 18:55

I hate it when people eat foods like eggs and fish in enclosed spaces like an office or train. It’s rank.
Nobody should be eating food at their desk it should be in in the staff room anyway.
I used to work with a woman who would microwave her omelette in the staff kitchen every morning and omg it would give me the heave
