It goes without saying you have to be a very selfish person to eat this at your desk?

My colleague returned from Tesco on her lunch break with a pot of boiled eggs from the food to go counter. She ate these at her desk and I struggled not to gag.

Surely it goes without saying that this isn’t an appropriate lunch to inflict on others in an enclosed space?

I think eggs are pretty routine, YABU.

LargeJugs · 16/12/2025 17:19

Boiled eggs - fine

lip smacking, eating eating with mouth open and making other weird eating noises - it kills me

There is one woman where I work and she is constantly munching on food throughout the day and she doesn’t keep her mouth closed! She then complains she is overweight (she is obese.)

Is it smelly food then?

You are right ego mayo or boiled eggs are pretty standard lunch items.

JohnTheRevelator · 16/12/2025 17:21

Wouldn't bother me tbh. But....the smell of oranges 🤢 So many times lately I've got on a bus and someone is eating one of the damn things. Don't know why but the smell just really annoys me!

notacooldad · 16/12/2025 17:22

My colleague does this. I dont care.Tbe only eggs i eat at work are omlettes.
There are worse foods for me, such as meat, especially cheap packet meats.

MisterT373 · 16/12/2025 17:22

I worked with someone who would microwave sardines & bring them to eat at her desk

Rank. That’s up there with microwaving and eating fish in an open plan office. I’d say she’s a sociopath

I would hazard a guess the microwaving a mackerel in an office is a tad more intrusive than eating a hard boiled egg or egg sandwich/salad 🤷‍♀️

Sometimes it’s spicy food but often she is just munching on crisps, biscuits and cakes constantly. She is noisy doing it.

PatThePenguin · 16/12/2025 17:27

It wouldn't bother me.

There are smells everywhere and we're not going to like them all.

It's just part of life.

Same here. That kind of stuff makes me so worked up and agitated, and even borderline angry, so I would not trust myself to refrain from yelling at her about it.

Shedeboodinia · 16/12/2025 17:27

Boiled eggs don't smell really unless you are very very close. I would have no issue.

I used to work with someone like this. Always bemoaning her weight while eating sweets 😂 She never did join the dots.

Nothing wrong with an egg! Or tuna. Actually, when I was at work, I sometimes took a Tuna Niçoise Salad. Covering all the bases there.

Ha ha. I think there would be a massive round of the vapours and exclamations of Grim, Just Grim from mumsnetters at my workplace as lunchtime meetings are catered for with sandwiches. Which contain, among other fillings - gasp - egg, tuna, processed ham etc. Maybe our work meetings would be accompanied by retching/gagging and walking out of meetings by posters were they to be employed at my unremarkable office .

Hasn’t any supervisor ever called her out over this, scoffing food all day at her desk? Surely that’s unacceptable in any shared office space.

What is your point? This is a discussion about smelly foods not fat people. Keep your judgements to yourself and let other people eat what they want.

I don’t know if anyone had spoken to her. She is quite a difficult woman.

As you surely inferred yourself, it’s all those ruddy awful noises it occasions. Bleurghhh

We all secretly judge people. I would of course never say anything to anyone about their weight but you can’t stop people thinking what they like.

SilenceInside · 16/12/2025 17:39

Boiled eggs are not particularly egg smelling, really. So I don’t think it goes without saying that it’s selfish to eat them at work. I find all kinds of smells grim, but I know that’s my issue and accept that I can’t control it in a shared space. I wouldn’t condemn a work colleague as selfish for eating a very normal food item.

jollyoldsanta · 16/12/2025 17:40

UABU it’s none of your business what other people eat.

Scully01 · 16/12/2025 17:49

I got on the bus once and sat next to a woman who pulled out a Tupperware full of pickled mussels. I swiftly moved.

Why people feel the need to do this, I don’t know.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 16/12/2025 17:57

Wouldn't bother me either, loads of people have smelly food at our office and I regularly eat hard boiled eggs as snacks...there's nowhere else to sit but at our desks so we just get on with it

InfoSecInTheCity · 16/12/2025 17:57

If it was consistently thought of to be an unacceptable food to eat at work or on the go then they wouldn’t be sold in the meals to go/sandwich section.

I have no issue with people eating boiled eggs near me, they were a standard part of packed lunches and picnics when I was growing up so I’ve always thought of them as a packed lunch kind of food.
