Not to buy new wrapping paper for SC?

readystdygo · 16/12/2025 09:09

Every year I buy new wrapping paper for my two kids. I wrap each kids in different paper so they can tell whos is whos.

I then wrap my step childs in whatever paper I have left. Step child is not here on christmas day.

I was discussing this with a friend and she said its wrong that step child dont get new paper too? I cant see how it makes any difference?

It doesn't sound great but I can see the practicality. I wouldn't broadcast that I was doing it in the way you have to your friend though.

I think it's more sad that the stepchild is never there for Christmas at all.

Just buy three fucking rolls of paper instead of two rather than innocently asking whether your low-key twattishness in fact makes you a twat. Because yes it does.

Aye.

Bournetilly · 16/12/2025 10:45

I think it’s fine because your SC isn't there on christmas morning. I also use different wrapping paper for each child. If your SC was there on Christmas morning I’m guessing you would also buy them new paper, so you could see who’s presents were who’s.

Another option is to buy a big pack of 1,000 sticky labels from a pound shop and put the child's name on each parcel. You could even print them.

Then each child would have a big, colourful, mixed pile of parcels and you would know whose is whose.

Yes there is this.

I find the "different paper for each kid" thing a bit strange... We grew up with name labels on our presents! It was mine and my sisters job to give out the presents from under the tree, and half the fun was finding the gift tag and seeing who got what!
I do the same with my kids now. Everyone gets the same paper, and I keep wrapping gifts until one roll is used, then swap to another roll. Gift tags get made every January but cutting up the Christmas cards!

This is the most ridiculous non problem I’ve ever seen on here . What are you all on about!

I agree . I give up !

herbalteabag · 16/12/2025 10:52

I don't think children really care what paper their presents are wrapped in to be honest. How will the SC even know, since all the Christmas Day paper will be in the recycling bin, presumably?

I know what you mean. I only started doing it as I said above in teenage years when stocking presents seem to get smaller but more expensive, so I wrapped some things to pad out the stockings. Made it easier for me on Christmas Eve to shove everything in the right stocking so that I could go to bed ! We still had labelled presents under the tree .

NoKnit · 16/12/2025 10:54

Surely just wrap in whatever you have and label the gifts??? I mean Santa doesn't wrap in different papers does he he labels them.

What a weird post

WimpoleHat · 16/12/2025 10:54

I do this with my kids - but it’s absolutely for my benefit so I know which are for DD1 and which are for DD2. Saves a lot of time compared to labelling them! It’s not “for them” at all. So yes, I’d happily use the leftover paper for the rest of my gifts for anyone else if I was going to label those. I think it’s a big non issue.

NormasArse · 16/12/2025 10:56

It doesn’t matter in the slightest. You have a very practical reason for wrapping your kids’ things in one paper; it’s not the fact that it’s ‘new’.

Nearlyhealthy · 16/12/2025 10:57

It’s the week before Christmas. If that’s the biggest worry in your life, you’re winning.

Different families have different ways of doing things ? We have Father Christmas presents in stockings so no labels, and presents from actual people labelled under the tree .

Livelaughlurgy · 16/12/2025 10:58

It depends, if you get Johnny blue Christmas football paper because he's football mad and Max green dinosaur paper because he loves dinosaurs and sdc gets left overs that's crap. If you get Johnny red Santa paper and Max blue Santa paper then I don't think it matters.

Idontpostmuch · 16/12/2025 10:58

I can't see any problem with it. Your step children not there on Xmas Day, so why not reuse and help the environment. A very Happy Xmas to you, your DCs and DSCs.

This. It's not a big deal to the DC.

If OP shared pictures of beautifully wrapped gifts for her DC all over socials then gives some shittily wrapped mess to SC fair enough but they doesn't seem to be the case.

Also her father can buy separate paper if he bothered.

This is even weirder. If you don't know that people do Christmas differently because Father Christmas is something we've made up, and therefore 'he' does different things in different families, then I don't know what to tell you.

Mimsykins · 16/12/2025 10:59

Oh this is so sad and unkind.

JeSuisUnePommeDeTerre · 16/12/2025 11:00

I buy each child their own paper, not necessarily new each year but separate patterns so I can tell the difference. Including SC as they are a member of my family and a child also.

justpassmethemouse · 16/12/2025 11:00

It’s the approach of “MY children get new paper and his just gets what’s left,” that’s potentially problematic, if this continues into other areas. Step-children are extra sensitive to anything that can make them “lesser” - even if this isn’t your intention and I’m sure it isn’t, the SC may perceive it this way.

Not sure of the ages of the kids - sorry if I missed this - as it’s probably most critical between 7-14 YO - outside this then the kids probably don’t care, as people have said.

Could you wrap all kids’ presents in a mix of paper and get Santa/snowman/reindeer stickers to differentiate instead? We used to have numbers 1-4 on our presents (I was the SC and “number 1”) and we loved that. Couldn’t tell you what the paper was - I think it was a big mix.

Good point 👍

How on earth do people manage to reuse wrapping paper?? My little one shreds the paper from his presents into bits when opening them!!! lol. Mind you I have been using drawstring gift bags as well. And they’ve lasted a few Christmases so far.

Backtoreality1 · 16/12/2025 11:02

Wow there are some ridiculous people here......I don't know any child who even registers what the paper looks like - they are too busy ripping it off. Its all new paper - not like you are pulling out leftovers or reusing paper.

I think you have phrased it wrong which is why everyone is getting their panties in a bunch. Love that the SC gets a second Christmas - it makes it much more special for them.

That's not what OP means. She's using whatever leftover paper she has for SC whereas DC ger their own dedicated design.
