Not to buy new wrapping paper for SC?

readystdygo · 16/12/2025 09:09

Every year I buy new wrapping paper for my two kids. I wrap each kids in different paper so they can tell whos is whos.

I then wrap my step childs in whatever paper I have left. Step child is not here on christmas day.

I was discussing this with a friend and she said its wrong that step child dont get new paper too? I cant see how it makes any difference?

Do you wrap your presents in OLD wrapping paper, then? Well, sometimes I do! I use last year's Christmas paper if I have a lot left over and buy some new (and also save nice paper from presents and re-use, a thing my late MiL did as well) - everyone's presents get a share of any of the available paper (tend to use children-type paper for children). I wouldn't wrap a DSC's presents in any other paper than the same as everyone else's.
Why are you treating your DSC differently? It's mean-spirited.
NB Late DH's preferred present wrapping was a bin-liner. It took a while to stop this - not mean, btw, but no understanding of how you wrap a presemt!

Of course it makes no difference. Don’t even think twice about it. Who takes notice of wrapping paper??!

TorturedParentsDepartment · 16/12/2025 11:35

Incidentally OP as my kids got older, my wrapping standards declined significantly - these days they get whatever is vaguely festive and nearest and I bought some posh present sacks so everything per-child goes into their named bag... the days of colour coordination are long gone.

Labels as long as I have some left - then it's a sharpie. The kids care what's inside the paper more - but I stand by the little gestures to make a kid feel equal thing - I'm equally shit as a parent with all of mine!

Endorewitch · 16/12/2025 11:35

Don't get whether SC gets paper left over from wrapping her own kids present or old paper used last year and kept. The first is fine as sc not there.
The second is a bit mean. I never knew people kept used wrapping paper! It must be somewhat crumpled
I find it misery. Sorry ,just MO

PinkFrogss · 16/12/2025 11:35

The only way i can see this being an issue is if you buy wrapping paper with your children’s interests in mind. E.g if DS loves peppa pig, DD loves Bluey, and DSC is a teenager with no interest in either of those things.

But it doesn’t sound like that is the case, more that posters love to have a go at step mums on here! If it’s really that big an issue then surely the problem parent is the dad who stands by and lets this cruelty happen to save himself buying a roll of wrapping paper?

To be fair, I think the OP does use the same paper for them all. Makes sense to use what’s left after all.

Crikey, how petty. If you do this with wrapping paper what else occurs ?

IsawwhatIsaw · 16/12/2025 11:43

It’s the treating differently that’s wrong. Can’t you see that? They will.

I dont waste it, I keep it and use it the following year

When I was a child (skint DPs) we used to open presents very carefully so the paper could be re-used next year. I well remember ironing some of it!

DoraDont · 16/12/2025 11:44

It's wrapping paper, who gives an actual fuck? Kids certainly don't.

Just write their names on the presents if it's that much of an issue and use the same paper for everyone.

NoKnit · 16/12/2025 10:54

Surely just wrap in whatever you have and label the gifts??? I mean Santa doesn't wrap in different papers does he he labels them.

What a weird post

Santas not real so people can do it whichever way they like.....I dont buy a few presents each, I would end up writing over 100 labels between all the kids. Iv got better things to be doing with my time.

Labels are very outdated as far as I'm concerned, unless its going to a family member then I dont label all my kids..

Yes. And it’s not just about the DSC seeing it or noticing. It’s also the OP’s own kids. They will see their mum specially buying new paper for them each year and their half or step sibling getting “what’s left over”.

He helps wrap all the presents. I just buy the paper.

is he bothered about how you use the paper?
if not - carry on as per
if he is - he can buy the paper as well as wrapping all the presents for his child.

job done

Maybe tone down the present buying if you have 100 gifts between three children.

as for labels being outdated, smh. So the presents have to be wrapped fashionably then?

youarebeingsoextrarightnow · 16/12/2025 11:47

I get different paper with matching gift bags for both my DC and my SDC, I always have done

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/12/2025 11:47

But it is new paper it’s just a roll that already been cut up and you used your children’s presents.

why would you buy a brand-new roll when you’ve got loads of left

I have maybe seven or eight rolls going cause everyone gets a different paper and if 6 of us are together on the same day and they’re all different

Glowingup · 16/12/2025 11:49

OP if you had another child who wasn’t with you at Christmas, would you give them the leftovers or buy them their own roll? And do you not put all the presents under the tree, including the DSC’s?

myglowupera · 16/12/2025 11:50

YANBU. It would be silly to have more paper lying around all year than you need to, when you could use up as much of it as you can by wrapping SC’s presents with it.

shhblackbag · 16/12/2025 11:50

TaupeRaven · 16/12/2025 10:07

I think it's rubbish that your SC gets a hodge podge of whatever's left, while your own kids get nicely matching paper.

It's irrelevant whether it's brand new or was bought last year, but just chucking together whatever is left in a mish mash is a bit shit

Agree. It does sound a bit shit.

Didn't ask for advice on the amount of gifts I buy. 😂

BarnacleBeasley · 16/12/2025 09:22

I think it's totally irrelevant - she's not buying new paper as a special treat, she's doing it so she can wrap all of one child's presents the same and not have to label every single one. If SC's presents aren't going to get mixed up with the others, it doesn't matter. No child gives a shit what paper they get.

This. The OP is not being unreasonable. The SC will not see the others' presents wrapped up. It will make no difference to her.

Doris86 · 16/12/2025 11:57

Seriously? Who cares what wrapping paper you use. The children definitely don’t, they’ll just rip it off to get to the present.

Different paper for Santa presents, and so you can differentiate between different children’s presents makes sense. But new paper just for the sake of buying a new
roll of paper?

Your friend has misunderstood the reason why you need different paper for your two kids. Of course it's fine what you are doing.

bridgetreilly · 16/12/2025 12:05

I do not think the children will care in the least about your wrapping paper strategy. Of all the things to get het up about, this is not one.

rockinrobins · 16/12/2025 12:06

I'm sure if your stepchild was there on Christmas day they would get their own paper to differentiate their presents.

It's a purely practical thing and it reduces waste.

YANBU and people's extreme reaction to this are strange.
